Ruff Wear's Approach Pack™ II is a multipurpose dog pack suitable for daylong trail outings and overnight summer trips. The XX-Small size has the room you need for treats, a collapsible dog dish and some pick-up bags. You carry the dog food and your pooch carries everything else.

Sizing runs small. I have a wired hair jack russel and his girth is very wide. The XXS is adjusted as loose as it will go to fit him. The pack is very well made with covered zippers and padding on the underside straps. I have a Small for my Labrador and it fits him with room to spare. Both dogs walk very freely with the pack and got used to it immediately.

Buck wore the pack with zero attitude or problems first time out and acted like he was something special. Second night he trotted over and stuck his head into the harness while I was making sure the straps were not tangled. Both nights the pack was empty and he walks better with the leash connected to the harness. Third night out I added a water bottle to each side and he loved it! Fourth night out I did not put the pack on him and he was being a bit hard headed on our outing. Fifth night out the pack goes on and he is a happy camper. These were just short 1.3 mile walks to see if he will tolerate the pack and get him used to wearing it. The plan was to go out this past weekend but my brother came to visit. Maybe this weekend.
I ordered a med and the pack is very well made. There seems to be padding in all the right spots. Buck is a Gr Pyr / Lab mix and currently hits the vets scale at 68lbs. He should put on about 10 more lbs I am guessing an the pack I believe will fit after he gains more wt.
The only concern that time will weed out is with the deep deep deep chest that Buck has is there enough padding on the fwd belly strap. Anything smaller the answer would be yes and it appears to be enough - time will tell though.
The only thing I would change is how the chest strap connects to the belly strap. It connects to well and is a pain to put on and off. That stated there is no slipping and works great.
I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this product. I would purchase it again if I had need for a second one.

We have two Havanese, about 14 & 16 lbs and the XXS is a perfect fit for them. They got used to them very quickly and don't seem to be bothered by them at all. Our trainer recommended weighted packs to "give them a job and drain some energy"... it's working!

This pack has it all! Great support, perfect balance, and roomy sidepacks. My Siberian and I do a lot of hiking in the wilderness areas of Montana and have never enjoyed a pack that performs as well as this one. One possible consideration from Ruff Wear would be to pad the shoulder straps. I did this after the first outing just because I wanted "Lily" to be more comfortable during a long haul. A product well worth the money!

I love the back pack. I too have a Mini Dachshund and it fits great on her. She is just too cute in her own little back pack and she looks proud wearing it. We will be using it a lot when the heat goes down here in Arizona.

I think this product is superior to other packs made for dogs. It's made to last. It comes in two great colors, and is adjustable. I plan on upgrading to the palisades II which has a bladder for water.

After searching far and wide for a pack that would fit my 18lb Shiba Inu. Went on a limb with the pack (ordering online) after the smallest Kelty pack didn't work. This Ruffwear pack turned out very nice. It looks more polished/nice then the previous model (original). Has nice adjustments, and fleece strap guards etc. Overall a great pack.

I love that you make such a small backpack, I have mini Dachshunds and couldn't find anything that was small, until I found your company online. One suggestion would be to sew suede or leather on the bottom of the packs, so that they don't wear out so fast.It would be like human backpacks, the way they have a reinforced bottom. You would only have to do it on the small bred packs, as they are so close to the ground. Other then the wear issue I just love our backpack and my dog looks so cute in it! Thanks

This is the best dog backpack I have found! I use it on my service dog and it works great. The webmaster harness underneath makes the backpack fit great and very comfortable. The packs are the perfect size for day to day items.

fits my dog perfectly. From trail hiking to rock scrambeling, it stays in one place and doesn't hinder his range of motion. The handle on the back is great. The only problem is the rear strap padding liked to slip off easily when not buckled. But, a quick stitch fixed it.

This pack is good for short walks only. I only take my dog on short walks in the park and put her own water bottle and mine in each pocket

My golden carries this pack. This is the only one that I have had that stays balanced and that is a biggy. It appears to be very comfortable for him and there has never been any chaffing. Good pack.

This is a good pack. our dog is 45lb catahoula and the medium is still a little loose for her. my only suggestion for the pack is some padding for the front straps. in warm weather the straps rub on her chest and i had to make covers for the straps. otherwise we wears it with pride.

The Approach backpack is a nice product. I have a 6 month old miniature pinscher who used to drag me down the street and with the Approach backpack it keeps him working a little bit more and now I don't work so hard trying to control him. I really like the handle on the topside of the harness and find that I use it alot to assist him into the car. The harness fits well however because I am using the D ring on the harness to clip on the leash I find that the backpack will pull to one side or another. I am hoping to find a head halti for him instead. I also wish that this backpack was designed to allow the pack to be removed like the Palisade II. Overall a good product.

My dox is a mix breed and falls between an xs and an xxs. He's too little for the xs, and just barely fits in the xxs. I don't think it would actually fit a dog with a 19" girth. The image also shows a handle, though this pack only has a little loop. Other than that, the pack is great, well balanced for pulling him up a cliff that's a bit to tall for jumping. Considering the size of dog it fits, the pack will hold my dogs food for a couple days, as well as his water and poop bags.

This pack is a great pack, except for the fact that it's saddlebags are not quite as big as some other packs available. It also only has one zipper on each bag, which can be a pain. On the top, at the rear of the pack, there is a seam at the base of the grab handle. It rubs a spot on my dog's back. I had to line it with fleece, and it still messes up her fur there, and I imagine it can be uncomfortable if she wears it for long periods of time. THIS is a flaw that I feel the manufacturer should consider fixing. Other than those three things, though, the pack is a great pack! I LOVE the spiderweb harness. It makes it much easier for the dog because the pack doesn't restrict shoulder movement.
