Excellent Design.
February 21, 2009

Maybe someday these can be custom made for each dog. On one of my dogs this fits perfectly - on the other I had to shorten it an inch or so on the bottom panel. But all in all a great product, and on they cannot get off themselves. They've lost countless coats in the undergrowth, and this stays on.

Not worth the price
April 02, 2013

After a few years of use, the shell is pilling under the shoulders and the zipper keeps breaking away from the teeth. The zipper and sleeves in the t-shirt type styling make it much more difficult to put on than with Velcro closures and an around-the-body style with open arms. The fit is tight, especially around the neck. It does seem to keep my dog warm but overall the quality and ease of use is not in line with the cost.

January 12, 2013

This is a great soft shell w/ 2 different fabrics, thinner/stretchier on the underbelly/chest, thicker on top. I especially like how much belly coverage there is!! (some males might find it a bit too long). I have a 35lb dog adopted from a tropical area (Taiwan) whose body is like large whippet or a mini version of a skinny German shorthair pointer or large whippet - deep chest, long long torso, skinny abdomen. This jacket in SMALL fits her length (unlike most) but is a tiny bit loose in the abdomen. This is actually good b/c on it's own, it's not going to be warm enough in cold weather or snowshoeing/skiing w/ me. If I pair this w/ a sweater or Ruffwear Climate Changer Fleece Jacket, I can feel better about her staying warm enough. Spendy thought, it used to be $20 less 4 yrs ago. But a jacket that fits is really worth the money & time saved in jacket hunting.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

Cloud Chaser - Excellent for Snow!
February 12, 2008

I was given this coat as a gift and just tried it on my Border Collie. We started snowshoeing and I was told he needed something that was water resistant and protected his chest from abrasion. This worked perfectly! He stayed warm and dry even after rolling in the snow. The zipper works much better at keeping the coat on than some coats with velcro. Definitely worth the extra money. The Ruffwear Griptex Booties are also money well-spent!

a little difficult to put on. I bought it to protect my setter's nearly hairless belly from ice and snow, of which there has been none yet. But it looks as if it should be just what he needs.

Its a good quality dog jacket & would recommend it
December 17, 2007

but my boxer is 67 pounds and per the sizing guide it said I needed a large. But it seems to be a bit to long for 'my boy. So I would say to order a medium and then return it if its to short. But love the fleece and the goretex!

Almost great.
December 27, 2011

The quality of construction and materials are superb. Unfortunately, however, form wins over function with this product, as the simple addition of adjustable fasteners for the dogs neck and chest/belly would've made this the best dog jacket for wintery conditions. going up one size would've made for a jacket too long for my pup's body length and leg length.

Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Performance, Cons: Cost

Great coat!

One of the few that keeps the chest and back quarters warm. The zipper could stand to be a little sturdier though.

Great Jacket
February 02, 2011

We took our 85lb. lab snow shoeing and thought he would need something to keep him warm given the unpredictable weather conditions. We were out in the snow for at least 5 hours and the jacket kept him warm, dry, and happy. We love how easy it is to put the jacket on with the side zip. The large size jacket fit perfectly snug, and Granite Grey looks really sporty. After several days of use, there were no signs of wear and tear on the product. We are very happy with the jacket.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use

Awesome coat for our 4 legged friends
December 23, 2011

This is the second coat of this brand I have purchased. Our one dog has had his for several years and we got another dog and bought her one too. The zipper has been changed to an all plastic and is a little stiff onlike the original metal one. Other than that, it's a great coat and keeps them warm and dry.

Great product but fits small
November 07, 2011

I have a small dog with hair. Snow sticks to her in clumps and it is really hard to get it off and I usually put her in the bath to defrost her. This jacket keeps her chest, upper legs and back snow free. It is long enough that it covers her whole back. It helps keep her warm and does not restrict her movement at all. On the sizing chart, she was at the upper end of the chest size so I went with the next size up and it fit her great. I am really glad I have this jacket for her for winter and highly recommend it.

Great rain jacket, better for females
January 04, 2013

The jacket is a very good design, easy to use long side zipper. Effective protection from rain & snow. The jacket protects the dog's chest and most of the underside as well so the dog stays dry and clean underneath - very important on the city streets when the water splashes can be dirty. Features reflective welting along both sides of the back. Stretchy shape-conforming fabric. My dogs are tall and 90-lb each and i bought the XL size which fit very well - not too roomy, not too tight. Only problem with the jacket design is that the underside coverage is so long that it is better for female dogs. I had to cut a tringle shape out of the underneath panel so that the boys' "parts" were not concealed; they couldn't do a #1 without the cuts being made. Luckily, the fabric stays intact even when cut and has not unravelled. Even with this issue, i still am glad i have the jackets for my guys.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: shape is best-suited for females

Great Jacket (and really cute too)
November 13, 2011

We ordered this jacket for our dog posthaste when we learned that the weather was going to get into the 20s during our upcoming camping trip. We have used quite a few Ruff Wear products with her over the years, so we had high expectations. However, this is probably the best of some really great products that we've gotten from them. The design is great. Using the suggested sizing guidelines, we ordered a small for our 30 lb. dog, and it fit great. I was worried about her shaggy fur getting caught in the zipper, but it wasn't a problem at all. I felt great knowing that she would have some protection from the cold. We haven't had the chance to try it in the snow or rain yet, but I imagine it would work great in those conditions as well. I will say that she was still shivering in the middle of the night while wearing it and had to crawl into my sleeping bag with me, but I don't hold it against the jacket. It was just plain cold. And I know she would have been even colder without it. And by the way, it is super-duper cute.

Overall a great coat, just a little tricky to size. People are saying the coat runs small, but the idea behind the coat is to fit tightly around the chest to hold in warmth. My GSP has a "pointy" chest & measured 29 inches around the chest holding the tape tightly. The medium fit her fine, but her chest does pull down the neck a little. She no longer shrivers when we go to the park & seems to have even more energy. The only problem we are having is the sleeves rubbing on her raw on her legs, maybe using elastic around the sleeves would help. prehaps they will stretch out in time. note that the tag says to wash it in powered detergent only.

Cloud Chaser Soft Shell Jacket
November 21, 2011

I have a very active Border Collie, and even though she has a double coat, she is very thin, so she needs more protection than her own coat. We spend long periods of time out in the cold during the winter. It is not heavy, so it blocks some of the cold but allows her body to breathe. It doesn't have a spoiled dog look, but rather the "I'm an athlete" type. I got a size Small, and although I'd like it to be a little longer, my dog is very long, it fits nice and snug in the body, without being uncomfortable. And the nicest benefit of it is that if sized properly, it adds a calming effect, similar to the one you get from a thunder shirt. It takes a little longer to put it on than the overcoat, since you have to fit the arms first, but it's worth it. It doesn't look like it's water resistant, it would probably repel it, so I would use it on dry/cold and powder snow days to avoid snowballs in the chest and belly, but will pay attention on wet conditions since wetness can then freeze.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

Lightweight and Feels Warm
July 09, 2009

I can only assume it feels warm, but the materials look like it will keep my pup warm when we go out in the snow this winter. I like the lightweight jacket and it fits surprisingly well, even with the length (he's 16 inches long from neck to base of tail and 17 inches at the widest part of his chest) with short legs.

Perfect Jacket...cozy, comfy and well built.

I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers, one is 13 lbs, the other is 18 lbs, size XS fit them both nicely. I can't wait to take them to the beach and snow to try them out soon! They also look quite good in 'em! :-) I have to also add that my shopping experience with Altrec surpassed my highest expectations...their price was GREAT, 2-day shipping was free and I got it in 1 shipping day to boot! We are very happy with everything! Looks like I may have gotten the last two at this amazingly low price... I would still spend more for the jacket, but am so happy I got it at this low price.

The cloud chaser dog jacket is very nice. It repels moisture and fits well. My only problelm is my dog is a male and the jacket could cut slighlty different. It sometimes interfers with him going to the bathroom. Overall really like the product.

Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Great value, Performance, Cons: Bad design

November 19, 2008

The jacket is great and my dog loves it! I have a beagle; she has a wider chest and a skinnier waist so it it slightly big at the waist. Otherwise it is a great fit and is true to sizing if you get too measurements! Great materials, definitely seems like it will last many seasons! We got the boots but so far we haven't been able to field test them. However they are excellent quality and again, true to sizing charts.

Great coat. Keeps her very warm and once she has it on I think she forgets about it. The openings for her front paws I think were a tad too snug and rubbed her the wrong way, once they openings were stretched a bit there seems to be no problem. All in all, a great coat that keeps her warm and dry.

superbly designed and made
November 23, 2010

I bought one of these for our golden retriever, who has lost her undercoat due to chemotherapy. She always tolerated even the coldest weather, but now she shivers when the temp is lower than about 35 F, and I'd rather not have her soaking wet in the rain. The Cloud Chaser is the prefect answer for her. It's by far the best designed dog jacket I've seen, and I've seen quite a few of them. It's also beautifully made. Ariel, who never was one to strut around in hats or coats, loves her new jacket. It's comfortable, yet it protects her very well. NOTE - When ordering, do be very careful about sizing, because I think these run smaller than you'd expect. Ariel measures just 30 inches around her chest, but the Medium size was way too tight - almost impossible to zip around her neck, and very confining. The Large size, which according to the sizing chart would be a bit loose, is just perfect for her. It's snug but not confining.

Great coat for winter adventures
February 16, 2012

I bought this coat for my 5mth 43lb 1 1/2 ft tall black lab for a winter paddling(canoeing) overnight tent camping trip. My dog wore the coat under her life jacket. It was just the right thickness to fit under her life jacket. The coat has room for her to grow into. Even though it was big for her currently she was able to walk, run and play in it easily. The zipper was a little difficult to get started on a playful puppy but once zipped it stayed closed. I especially liked the fact that the coat covered her belly to keep her warm. My dog was comfortable enough in the coat to be able to go to the bathroom without soiling the coat(TMI but important info). The temp was approx 20 degrees plus wind on the river and at camp. The only thing that I would add to the coat to improve it is more reflective trim for night time visibility. I would highly recommend this coat.

January 11, 2011

We have a British Lab (smaller than an American Lab) who is 60 pounds and right at the middle of the Medium size range for this coat. I read the reviews and it seemed they ran a bit small, so we ordered a large. The large was baggy on him. I sent it back and ordered a Medium. The medium fits snugly (like it's supposed to), but I did mark that it ran a little small because, according to the sizing chart, he should have a little room to grow and I'm not so sure he could get too much bigger and have it still fit. The coat is great quality, has reflective stripes on each side, a loop for a light if you'd like, and I love that it has a zipper (took some getting used to for him to get in it thoguht haha)! I would definitely purchase again! Note: the coat does get pretty close to where my dog almost potties on it when he goes :)

Well made but fits snuggly
October 17, 2011

Our 6 month old Westie puppy Piper is preparing for her first German winter. We ordered the Cloud Chaser for those many snowy, wet days. The jacket is very well made, and she put it on right away. The problem is that Westies tend to have wide hips and can be a bit stocky. Although we want the jacket to be well fitted, it was a little difficult to zip towards the base. We are debating sending it back to order the next size up, XS. Either way, we know she will be warm and toasty when she is romping in the snow!

Amazing great looking coat
April 20, 2008

It is so well made and the material is amazing. I was worried about the fit because my dog is a deep chested, small waist breed, but the fit is great and hugs my dog like a glove. The reflective tape comes in really handy on those cold winter morning walks and late night dog training sessions. I recommend this coat to anyone wanting to keep there dog warm and dry, but still stylish! Two thumbs up again Ruffwear.

I was looking for a coat that would keep the underneath of my Bichon Frise dry in any type of weather that Maine can bring us. This is the perfect coat for the job, not only is the coat very well made but the ergonomic fit stays close to her body keeping her nice and warm even on the coldest days. I have to admit, I was a little leary of the zipper because she has so much fur, but it is not a problem at all. Excellent Coat, I actually bought another because I liked it so much.

Great coat for the right situations
January 20, 2011

I, or rather my dog, has had this coat for over a month now and I love it. It hasn't been the coat of choice recently since it's not very thick at all and my 50lbs pit bull with her short hair gets cold easily. If you want a coat to wear during heavy activity like running or when it's a little warmer like 30-40 degrees this is a great coat but for colder climates you need something warmer. It's very water resistant on top so when it's lightly raining it's great. However the wind and water resistant part only covers a little higher than mid chest up on both sides so if wind is coming from the sides it would cut right through the stretchy fabric below that. The sizing description (S - 23"-30" (58-76 cm), M - 27"-32" (69-81 cm)) had me thinking about it for a while since my dog's chest girth is 27". From the chart you would think she would fit in the small just right and that the medium might fit but be a little loose. However due to some reviewers mentioning they run a little small I ordered the medium. Boy was I glad. Even with the medium I still have to stretch it a little in order to zip it up but that's what gives her that athletic look in this coat. I don't think she could've fit in a small at all. The length fit perfectly for her too. One of the things I like a lot about this coat is that it covers almost her entire underbelly. Sorry, boy dogs, this coat will in no way fit you because of this. So far I've seen no hot spots or chafing areas on this coat so that's good news. Overall it's a great looking coat and fits her perfectly. I only wish it was a little warmer so she could wear this one instead since she looks so good in it!

January 30, 2012

I am a fan of the jackets for its material but the neck is too large for the rest of the coat sizing. My Dobe is standard, 70 lbs the XL was too large in the neck but the Large is tad snug in the body. I love the color choices and refelctive areas. The coat is great for longer runs and the waether resistent elements are great. Took it for a 4 miler today and really think it helped as the wind was high and it was damp. My dog ran well in it and had no rub marks where I thought he might. Good overall

Not the right jacket for my dogs
July 20, 2011

I bought these for my two pit bulls who have thin coats and get cold easily when they hang with me at climbing crags and campfires. I'd put these on my dogs when they start shivering, but then they'd keep on shivering. I'd slide my hand in between and it wouldn't feel very warm underneath the jacket. Ultimately I'd have to cover them in my own jackets. Overall the construction is really good and durable, and fits well. This is probably a better product for a dog with a naturally thicker coat, to keep them warm and dry while they're active in rain/snow/otherwise wet conditions. Recently I changed to the Climate Changer Fleece (also Ruff Wear) for my dogs and those work perfectly. I would recommend those to thin coated dogs who need to stay warm!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Cons: too thin

Great for my large mastiff-mix! I walk my dog 3-4x per day to keep his arthritic joints and muscles limber, so, when we moved to Minnesota we found he needed a coat to keep him warm through the cold winters. good coat.
February 11, 2011

this coat is supposed to fit snuggly. that being said, if you have a stockier breed of dog it may be a little tighter on your dog than you would like. my cocker spaniel mix is a bit barrel chested. as is the coat fits pretty tightly. i call it her sausage casing coat! once she goes outside she neither care nor notices its presence and it goes protect her chest from snow balls forming. i wish they would make a more full coverage coat for dogs with snow-attracting coats! i am pleased with this coat. i think if i ordered a size up she would be swimming in it and it would not offer proper protection to her chest.

Great coat

I ordered this for my golden/border collie mix, Female 55 lbs in Large. It doesn't fit snug, but needed Lg for the length. She loves it and it works great to keep her dry--especially underneath. It didn't fit the Male 62 lb Lab though (full coverage underneath didn't fit male so well) so I will get him the Ruffwear raincoat on this site. The lab didn't like the sleeves either--but he's a goof.

Just what I was looking for

This coat is the perfect one for those chilly days, but also it keeps the snow off the arms, neck and chest so she can play in the snow longer than ever. I did need the next larger size, but now it's perfect.

Great coat with good fit

I bought this coat for our Jack Russell mix who is very athletic and loves to be outside on our ranch. It has a stretchy panel on the bottom side and fits snugly which is great since he does not get it caught and it does not flap around. I used the Ruffwear sizing information and measured before ordering and it fit properly.
