ruff wear highlands bed for dogs
May 19, 2010

as will all the ruff wear gear I've purchased, these beds are well-designed, well-made and ideal for their intended purpose. i have 2 German shepherds i hike/camp with and they carry these lightweight beds in their ruff wear packs, then sleep on them overnight, well-protected from the cold, damp ground. thank you ruff wear.

The Skinny on Highlands Dog Bed
March 18, 2011

The greatest thing about the Highlands bed is its packability; when stuffed into its included stuff sack, it just disappears into that sliver of empty space in your pack--you know the one I mean. I really bought this more for myself since my dog's old bed was just too bulky to carry on extended backpacking trips. This is now her go-to bed for overnights in the backcountry. This portability, however, comes at a price. The Highlands bed is more of a pad. Meaning...it's thin. The description boasts 1.5" of 'loft' but don't mistake that for any kind of comfort padding. I assume it's more for an insulation/ground cover benefit. It's also smaller than we anticipated; it all but disappears under my 60lb husky. The corners are rounded off, so a fair amount of area is lost. She was content to sleep on it, though; I guess it beats the ground as far as she is concerned. The material seems rather delicate, so you may want to seek out softer ground free of anything that might snag or puncture it (but you would do that anyway, right?). The stake loops are a nice touch, too. A stiff breeze took this bed for a ride before I had a chance to stake it out. All in all, a good bed and worth the price for a TRUE backpacking bed for your best friend.

Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, nice 'extras', supreme packability, ultralight, Cons: Cost, smaller than expected, thin
