Great leash!
April 29, 2011

I have a 70ish pound dog that I jog with and take on trails. She chews up regular leashes and chain leashes are too short and uncomfortable. I do like retractable leashes as they give her the freedom to run around but gives me the option of keeping her by my side when necessary but retractables are just not made for bigger dogs. I have been buying new ones every couple of months because she breaks them. So I researched and researched and found this leash. What a great idea! The stretchy cord gives just the right amount of pull and cushion so that my dog knows shes gone too far and needs to slow down. With the other leashes she would practically rip my arm off. Material looks sturdy and i think this leash will last me a long time. Handle is super soft and comfy. Need to train my dog a bit more before I try out the around the waist function. The leash is a bit long and heavy for when we are trotting side by side. I have the large leash...defintely not good for smaller dogs. Not sure how heavy the small leash is.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, comfortable to hold, Cons: long

Hands free leash!
November 18, 2012

I really like the leash. One is able to walk the pups hands free. The leash allows a little give, so the pups won't jerk you so hard if they decide to lunge forward. It is especially nice if you like to run. The only drawback I have found, if the pups are not actively walking (just sitting or standing) then the leash is on the ground, this also happens if they are walking slow. Overall, I really like having this leash and the freedom it gives by being hand free.

Outstanding leash
October 03, 2011

This is excellent for trail hiking. The hands-free aspect works perfectly - adjusts easily and securely to stay put around your waist. The "give" of the bungee (not just a thin elastic band) is just right and helps both man and beast maintain proper balance. With the secure buckle, both hand-hold loop mode and waist loop mode allow for quick and easy securing of leash with items from a tree trunk to a car door handle (- tie your boots without having to hold leash at the same time). Extremely well made of quality components. Only caveat is to be aware that a size L with a 20 pound or less dog is just too big - both functionally speaking and simply in terms of looking odd. So, even if you really want the extra reach the size L gives you, it is probably best to go with size S (and loose a bit of reach) if you have a small pooch.

What a great leash! Gives my dogs neck protection from a sudden jerk. I use it when I bike with him and have it strapped around my waist and because of the recoil tension it doesnt sag down and get caught in my moving parts. Great for hands free use, best when used with a harness!

Awesome for big dogs with little owners
July 04, 2011

Before diving into this review, let me preface it by saying that I am very petite owner of a huge lab that is known for dragging me along. This leash is, hands down, the best leash I've bought for my dog. The Roamer dog leash (paired with my pup's harness) changed our running routine for the better. The elastic band allows enough give in the leash so that it is now difficult for my dog to drag me. It controls him without hurting him or me. The leash allows him to check out the trails without getting too far away. It also brings him back to me with a small tug. Not to mention it removed the pain of having to run with a leash in-hand with the cool waist-wearing feature. I couldn't be more happy with this product.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

The boingy nature of this leash allows us to tether our pup to ourselves and walk without worrying about stepping on the slack. Great to use when running or hiking with your dog!

Nice concept, but doesn't work well for regular walks
December 11, 2009

So, I bought this with the intention of trying to NOT use a retractable for my Beagle (he's a roamer). We live in the city and walk to the park daily, but this leash is ineffective for normal walks. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: decent quality, nice adjustable waist band (for runners and hikers), quick snap c-closure, and nice padded handle. Cons: can't get quick control (even with the traffic handle...I have to reach down since my dog is short and I am taller...my husband dislikes this leash and this aspect), elastic eventually gets stretched out and loose after few uses, and I have to pull for a while before my dog feels it, by then I'm choking him. I think that if you use this for what it was intended for (runners/hikers who usually take their dogs for this activity), then it's fine...but not recommended for average walks where you need to be able to control your dog quickly and efficiently.

Perfect trail running leash.
May 30, 2011

As a leash for walking it's ok...springs back well enough. Where it shines is out on the trails. My dog can sprint ahead (but not far enough ahead to get in trouble) yet i can grab onto it when needed. The material isn't too sharp/rough to grab onto and the handle plenty soft on the hand.

Very good running leash
December 30, 2011

I bought this leash to help teach my puppy to run by my side. It has been an excellent purchase. Any time my puppy pulls to far the elastic in the leash adds more tension and she comes back closer to my side. I love the hands free feature, it is great when we are running in wide open spaces. If we are running near a street I usually hold the leash a little closer to my side to keep her closer, but all in all excellent purchase, good quality. Love it.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, good running training tool

Walk, jog or run with your hands free
April 22, 2008

My dog likes his space and I like mine, so running is a challenge. When we can't run off leash in the woods back home, this clever and flexible leash gives him room to do his business sniffing and scratching without tripping me up. The bungee piece makes jolts when either of us stray too far less severe. If you are a walker, jogger or runner, this nifty leash lets you keep your hands free and let's your best friend have a fragment of freedom too.

Keeping Man's Best Friend Close By
August 13, 2011

I've used this leash during day hikes with my parent's crazy jack russell terrier. I usually unsnapped the "handle" end of the leash and then re-snap it around the waist belt of my pack so I can hike hands free without worrying about the pooch running off. When you are ready to stop and eat, enjoy the views, treat your water, etc., you can unsnap the handle and re-snap it around a tree or branch. The elastic cord allows some give when your dog tries to lead out in front of you. This is much preferred over my old leash because there are no sudden jerks during the hike. I also enjoy the fact that there is a handle grip right next to the buckle that attaches to your dog's collar. I always grab this handle when other hikers or dogs are passing by. This allows me full control of my dog and prevents her from turning into a jack russell "terrorist" on other hikers or dogs. My only qualm about this leash is that the buckle used to clip onto my dog's collar came undone once when I had her snapped to a post while I was fishing. Although it was the only time that this has happened to me, another reviewer had a similar experience. Similar to what the other reviewer stated, I think this was due to my dog twisting the leash into a weird angle which caused the buckle to unclip. (she had a lot of down time while I was casting some lines). At any rate, I don't think it's a deal breaker but it is definitely something to keep aware of. Happy hiking!

I love the spring action. It really helps with my dog, who acts like she has springs in her legs. Only down side is the clip. It seems to unclip itself if twisted in a certain way. Its only happened to me twice, but has me worried on roads. Will use this leash while hiking, but probably not near cars. Probably wouldn't be a problem with a calmer dog who doesn't spin and jump. I think they fixed this on the newer model, different hard-ware. Also the material has roughed up a bit, but this has not affected its use. I absolutely love that the handle expands so that you can clip it around your waist.

The Dog Can Go!
August 22, 2011

I am 5'1" and have a 40lb Mini Aussie. We go running together, and he recently snapped his retractable leash, so I was looking for a hands-free to a) help with my running gait and b) give him a little flexibility without too much length and hassle. I hesitated to buy a too-short length and went with the Large which happened to be a little too long. I end up holding a handful of the bungee if we're not running very fast because it drags and gets caught up underneath my dog. However, when we're actually running at a normal pace it seems to be fine, hitting my shins but not interrupting my stride and not dragging on the ground. If I were to buy it over again I would choose the Small. This leash has somehow helped with Griffin's ability to walk on a loose leash, perhaps by offering consistent boundaries when he's attached to me. It has made a big difference in the activities he can participate in, from taking out the garbage, to making multiple trips from the car, to hiking. Having both hands free has made a huge difference in what we can do together, and for that alone this leash is worth it.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use

Love this leash
November 12, 2009

This leash in a great alternative to retractable leashes, which can pose risks to both dog and human. It allows some roaming space but a lot more control. I have a small dog (28 lbs) but I got the large leash for the added length. He doesn't seem to mind the weight of it at all. I'm extremely happy with the quality of the leash as well, as I always have been with products from Ruff Wear.

Great Handfree leash,
August 30, 2008

We have two dogs that love to run and play. With the easy clip, you can clip one on your waist, and hold one in your hand, and have a hand free. With the bungee piece, helps the dogs from pulling, having some room to do their business. The handle is very comfortable. The leashes also hold up to weather very well. We have had one for 6 years and it still works, and I have it clip to the ponch to wash the dogs.

Love This Leash
November 14, 2011

This is the second time I have purchased roamer dog leashes. I had one years ago and it worked great. Now I walk a standard poodle and a golden lab. With the differences in personality (one runs ahead and one lags behind sniffing) there was a lot of pulling. Walks were no fun. I remembered the roamer and bought two. Excellent. The dogs are able to move freely and I get a peaceful walk. Also great when a car approaches, the leash has a handy restraining loop.

Tough Enough for a Husky
May 05, 2012

I love using this leash for walking & running my husky. She is quite a puller at times and it gives my arms & grip a break. The pull from the hips is a lot more stable than a typical leash, you can also move more naturally while running. I also like the bungie line, it gives me less shock when she lunges at a squirrel or bunny.

Order from korea
August 18, 2011

i got this product since it became a bit hassle to carry my westie (1 1& 1/2 yr old) with leash with her potty bag and tissue. And i wanted to ready my westie for a newborn baby and still able to walk her 3 times a day. She doesnt walk much but often for pottying. I live in the city but still this roamer made my life easier and i cant wait to habe mybaby in a stroller and walk my westie. For city or rural, this is must have item if u want to walk freely. It has been raining a bit so carrying umbrella wont be so bad due to thr roamer. I got small and it keeps her close to me and the leash doesnt get dirty by getting dropped on the floor. My westie is about 16lb so if u habe beagle or bigger, large would be appropriate. One downside is, there is no ruffwear shope in korea, wish it will open here soon cause i know ppl are already eyeing on mine :) And if it can be imrpoved wish the waist strap can be moved in case the dog sway from side to side or go behin. Now i need to turn around or just move the leash. But nothing major demerit i have to say.

Waist Wrap Dog Leash
December 23, 2011

This leash is genius! One end of the leash wraps around the owner's core and the other hooks to her dog's collar, while a springy extension joins the two. This is fabulous for most types of leash-requiring activities. The only suggestion I offer Ruffwear is that they consider providing directions/simple illustrations to the purchaser, as I have given the roamer as gifts to dog-lover friends, and I must explain how to use the roamer before they are able to recognize its value. Once they "get it," however, they are elated!

The long leash is built for the dog that will stay in front and keep some tension on the leash (Roamer). The leash really helps the shock of the sudden bolt. A short leash would be better for the dog who tends to stay close. Heavy duty for sure!

THE BEST LEASH OUT THERE!
September 16, 2009

This is the only leash I use for walking/running. I love it! I put it loose on my waist and it moves freely with my dog. You do need to be aware of the two sizes, I have the large but it is a little heavy for my 40 pound border collie.I will be ordering a small one as well and will give the larger one to my son's golden retriever. This leash is hard to find in stores and the quality of Ruff Wear is exceptional.

Awesome leash for hiking with the dog!
January 29, 2011

We have been looking for a durable leash that is ideal for taking our dog hiking in the mountains - THIS IS IT! The leash is very durable and can withstand scrapes on rocks. The large handle loop is adjustable and clips around your waist so you can go hands free, sip water along the way, grasp objects as you climb..., all without getting tugged by you little buddy. The built in bungee makes your hike an enjoyable one, because your dog know when he/she is getting near their limit as resistance builds. A great leash, at a great price!

Great for a former sled dog
January 30, 2009

We discovered these leashes a few years ago and have never gone back. We are on our third roamer leash and are surprised more gear stores don't carry them. They are the best!! Especially for dogs like ours, a former sled dog, who will never learn to heel and loves pulling. We find it just as effective and much simpler than the marketed system for skijoring (which we also have but never use). We also use it for walks, runs, biking, and pulling our kids on sleds. Can't say enough good things about it. Thanks Ruff Wear!

I got this leash a couple weeks ago to run with my dog -- I got the large size even though the pup is only 32 pounds, and while I was worried about it being a little heavy for her she doesn't seem to mind too much. She's too excited while running to care, and she doesn't get jerked around like she did on our handheld leash. The length is perfect for where we run. I was also worried about not being able to control her when needed if we pass other walkers, etc., but I don't find it too much trouble to grab the leash farther down and get a good enough grip. She's happy she's getting to run so much more often -- and hands free jogging is so much more enjoyable for me!

Hands-Free Leash, Less Shoulder Cramps
May 06, 2011

I'm so glad I bought this leash, it's not as long as I thought it would be, but my dog can run with me without my arm being pulled or getting a cramp from holding a leash. I use it occasionally with a choke collar so he doesn't forget that he still can't bolt when he's on it, but he stays close most of the time. Seems like it's going to last a long time, heavy duty elastic, nylon webbing and buckle. I got the Large in green, love the color. Even when the dog is tired and he starts lagging and running right next to me, the leash isn't long enough to trip on, it just keeps hitting my shin. The traffic handle is a good extra to grab on if there are other dogs on the trail or people and for crossing roads. Overall good buy, makes the run more enjoyable. I do get funny looks from people sometimes.

Fit Perfect!

This leash really work great! Hand free and it doesn't touch the ground so it won't get dirty.

Best running leash
April 28, 2010

I've tried a few leashes from other brands and this one has been the best of all. It's been really good at trail races where I must keep the dog running at my pace without applying any pull on her. The leash extends long enough to give the necessary freedom of movement.

For hands free walking, this is a good choice
May 20, 2010

I like this hands free leash because it has a loop near the collar to control your dog, when needed. I'm a big advocate of having my dog walk next to me - so the length of this leash is a little long, but I don't mind it. It helps when we stop and I let her walk and sniff. She can go to the full extent of the leash and I don't feel like I'm being dragged around.

The roamer has been great for both my dog and me while running. It provides a lot more control than the retractable leash.

Great For Running!
March 04, 2012

I have several Ruff Wear products and this leash is one of my favorites. This leash is very high quality and does an excellent job absorbing shock while running with my dog. I have used it for canicross and bikejoring along with the Webmaster harness. I take advantage of the adjustable clasp to attach the leash to my waist or other objects like my bike stem. I also love the short handle at the top for when I need to hold the dog close for a bit.

Great for hiking
October 23, 2010

I really like this leash for hiking. Gives your dog the little extra to roam when you can't have them off leash. I wouldn't recommend this on the street since it is harder to control your dog from extending but great for elsewhere!

I have a border collie puppy that I'm teaching to run along side me. This leash is perfect! I can strap this around my waist and the leash allows him to roam a little bit.

Good leash

As Jake feels the tension, he knows to ease off. Very durable. Good leash. The handle is useful in that I can easily gook it around something to hitch him to.

IZZY LOVES TO ROAM!!!
January 10, 2012

I bought this leash on sale.....the only fault I could find was the clip, cheap black plastic, but otherwise this leash is fantastic. My big GSP is now able to roam the side of the field where we walk, and still be safely leashed when cars approach. Besides the clip, (the new roamer leashes have a sturdy looking metal clip, but are more $$$) the only other fault is the lack of immediate control....sometimes I want to grab him, and the roamer is just too stretchy! but otherwise, fantastic leash for my dog

These leashes are great! I have two small dogs that are definitely runners if not on a leash. This leash provides comfort that they're secured but also have room to explore. Love it!

Wonderful Leash
October 10, 2011

We have three dogs (75#, 65# and 14#). I bought this leash as all like to walk/jog/run at different speeds and I can't handle three leashes. I originally thought this leash would be nice for the smaller dogs, but found that our big guy absolutely loves the freedom it allows him to move around me, but also move as quickly as I do. I thought he may pull me over, but the shock absorption is spectacular and I haven't had any problems with him pulling at all. I highly recommend this to any person with a dog (runner or not). I read some reveiws about the hardware breaking. It seems very sturdy to me. I haven't had the leash long, but I'm not too worried about it breaking as it seems to be good quality hardware.

Great for hiking

Provides just the right amount of controlled exploration in the woods. Well made; lots of options for attachment and adjusting length. If you have an active dog, I recommend this highly.

Great for Running & Hiking
August 10, 2010

Our dogs took to these leashes pretty quickly and have done pretty well on the first few initial hikes we have done. The loop/handle by the clip makes correction easy and the bungee/elasticity of the leash won't allow the dogs to pull you like a regular leash would. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who want to take their dogs out and be hands-free!!!

Excellent Leash for Hiking Trails
October 05, 2009

My husband wanted this leash for walking our dog on hiking trails. He loves that he can buckle it around his waist and be hands free. The elastic allows our Mochi to wonder the trail without getting too far ahead. I wouldn't recommend for walking on the street or near traffic as the elastic also makes it difficult to control your pet in an emergency.

Great leash

This is a great overall leash. I use it to run with my young dog who is still learning how to run on the leash. It is very comfortable! It is also easy to hook up to just about anything if the need arises.
