Salomon XA Pro
March 01, 2012

This is the second pair of these shoes I've owned. The gortex makes these the perfect all year long, do everything in shoes! The lace system is awesome! I get so many compliments on these..very good looking :)

Pros: waterproof, durable, stylish, comfortable

Hopes dashed
January 31, 2013

After reading the other reviews I was sold, I ordered a half size down as suggested and the length was good. However after getting them, I tried them on with numerous sock combos and even tried an insole to get them to fit better. They put terrible pressure on the topside of my arch, I have high arches but have never had a shoe hurt like this. I also have narrow feet and even with a thicker sock on and getting the lace system as tight as I could they felt loose/ floppy on. It may have been the lacing system, defintely not a fan of it now. Cute shoes and seemed like good quality but a no go for my feet.

Favorite Shoe
November 12, 2011

I love these shoes! I have owned 5 pairs and don't think I will ever buy any other light hiker. They fit true to size, have good traction, hold up well, and I love the lacing system. Everyone in my family now has these shoes and fell the same as I. Would recommend to buy!

Close to perfect trail running shoe
February 28, 2012

This shoe has the features I was looking for - roomy toe box, great support and stability, protection from wet conditions, and a sole that sheds mud and debris. I did not give it 5 stars because the traction is not perfect, but that is an acceptable compromise for a tread that does not accumulate every rock, stick, and glob of mud. I have used it on dry and muddy dirt roads and trails, on steep sidehills, running through grass, snow, sagebrush and it performed beautifully. The only time I had traction trouble was in an inch of new snow which was so slick even a more aggressive tread might not have helped. I usually wear a size 7.5 but in this shoe, I wear a 7.

nice lightweight shoe
September 24, 2012

Love this shoe! It's super lightweight yet sturdy enough for hiking and lightweight backpacking. The outsole grips well but if you need any kind of arch support the insole should probably be replaced with an after market version. I love the extra roomy toe box on this shoe, which seems consistent across the XA Pro line. Unlike the Synapse, the outsole has an arch which makes these shoes compatible with gaiters that require an understrap. This shoe is not as breathable as other lightweight hikers, probably because of the Gortex lining. It helps to keep them free of dust. The quick lace system has some pros and cons. There's a storage pocket for the excess shoelace at the top of the shoe's tongue, but the top row of laces blocks access to the pocket. I usually tie them, then scootch the laces down so I can then slide them up into the pocket. Salomon needs to improve on this a little bit. I love the quick lace system but it does severely limit your tying options. Otherwise they're a good, supportive, lightweight shoe. With after market insoles I can get by comfortably with a pack weight of 25 pounds. I don't expect them to last more than 600 miles. Also I think these shoes run slightly large so if you're between sizes, size down.

Pros: lightweight, roomy toe box, compatible with gaiters, Cons: not super durable, not breathable

Rough heel!
March 20, 2012

All my running shows are Salomons, btw. This one runs large (get 1/2 smaller than usual) and the back of the shoes is very hard and rubs against the heel as you put your foot in. However, you don't feel it while running. I do think that Salomon has been slipping a little in quality, making more "improvements" on a good thing instead of leaving it alone. I wish I could go back in time and buy 20 pairs of the same model 3 years ago :) Still my favorite running shoe for comfort!

Third pair purchased and happy again
April 01, 2012

I love these shoes, which is why I am on my 3rd pair of them. There only seem to be a few brands of shoes and boots that fit my narrow, high- arched, short-toed foot, and Salomon is one of them. (Vasque, Nike, Asolo, while great shoes that many of my friends love, do NOT fit my feet.) I not only use them for trail running, but I also do all of my hiking (except for backpacking), and a good deal of hanging out in these shoes. I like the narrow profile of the shoe, they give me plenty of "sensitivity" on the trail, whereas heavier, wider shoes (such as Keens) feel like too much shoe and make me feel clumsy. The sole is beefy and grippy. I can't comment on the insole, as I have a customized orthotic that I use in all of my shoes. I live in the mountains of Utah and have snow and slush to deal with a lot longer than most. The GTX feature is great, I can walk right through a puddle and my feet stay dry. I often run on packed snow or mixed snow/slush ice, mud and dirt in a single run, and the shoes perform great. Understandably, when the shoes start to wear out, so does the waterproofing. While I love the convenience of Salomon's lacing system (it almost makes them into a "slide on" shoe, as it is so easy to quickly fasten the laces), this in the only place where I have a complaint. When the laces on my last pair broke, it was a MAJOR hassle factor to replace them. It took me almost an hour, special equipment and a lot of concentration to get one shoe laced. I'm not sure I would give up this lacing system all together, though I do wish Salomon would come up with a design that made replacing broken laces easier. Overall, great shoes, or I wouldn't keep buying them. I would give them 4 1/2 stars, 5 if replacing laces was easier.

Pros: comfortable, waterproof, good-looking, long-lasting, great performance, Cons: shoe laces difficult to replace

Favorite Shoes!
December 30, 2012

I have to spray my shoes off with the hose 2 times a day after going into my barn and taking care of my horses. I love not having to change into my barn boots everytime! The shoes rinse off quick and my socks stay dry! I will buy these shoes for as long as they make them. They have nice arch and ready to wear with no break in time at all. Love them!

Now into 4th Pair
January 28, 2013

I've been buying these running shoes now for over 5 years. They are the best I've ever had - the shape fits my foot and they fit true to size. I like the lightweightness of them and the cushioning. Being GTX I can wear them in all weathers. Only problem is, because I walk in them every day, I wear them out!

Pros: sizing just right, Cons: sometimes the quick lace has to be replaced

Great shoes
March 11, 2012

I love Salomon trail shoes and have bought several pairs of this model. They are tough, lightweight, great for muddy/wet trail conditions and have a nice grippy tread for slippery rocks. I find that Salomon shoes always run a bit big so I order a half size smaller than usual.

All around shoe
April 20, 2013

This shoe is perfect for all types of weather, moisture wicking keeps your foot the perfect temperature, not too hot not too cool, a rugged shoe that is built for comfort and stability. The shoe fits like a sock and keep the foot in place. I have arthritis and this shoe helps keep my foot from twisting. Light like a running shoe rugged like a hiking boot. A trail shoe that is light like a running shoe. I would recommend this shoe to anyone who hikes or walks on rugged terrain.

High Quality Delivers in Every Way!
January 02, 2012

Show fits true to size. Excellent water protection, traction, and comfort. I LOVE THE LACE SYSTEM! Colors are fun and the shoe performs in every way. I definitely recommend wearing the shoes several times out hiking before running trails in them (break them in). I wore them trail running in Winsocnsin, it had snowed the night before, but the warm sun was melting it by day making for some slippery & cold terrain. I had traction & warm/dry feet when I finished my 6mi run.
