The Clip Flashlight CD tent remains a proven three-season favorite for backpackers and minimalists who like to keep their pack load light without sacrificing versatility. While most two-person Sierra Design tents have stuff sack dimensions of 6.5 in. x 24 in., the Clip Flashlight CD fits into a compact 5 in. x 20 in. sack while allowing for 43 inches of interior headroom. Combine it with the optional clip Flashlight CD Footprint (sold separately) and you have a lightweight summer package that weighs in at a little over two pounds. The updated design features Sierra's patented Stash Door portal that neatly stuffs into an internally mounted pocket where it remains dry and clean. Color-coded webbing and poles as well as reflective zipper pulls help facilitate late night setup.
its a beast!
I love this tent! the best thing about it is the wieght factor extremly light..i hiked up a mountian with my old tent for the last time..i would not recommend this tent for people over 6ft it would be really tight..also this tent has only two poles and because of that you have to stake the tent in the groun so it will stand up. if you are some place with solid rock you could run into some problems.
Best lightweight 2-person around
I've had this tent for years and its simple effectiveness never lets me down, even in the worst of rain. It's a little tight for two 6-foot 200-pound guys, but acceptable, as long as you don't mind your bags brushing up against the sidewalls. It's superb for going solo. It's very easy to setup, even by yourself. I keep checking to see if this tent is still for sale, just outta curiosity, considering that mine has held up so well over the years I just can't justify buying a new one...yet.
The best lightweight backpacking tent around
I have been using the Clip Flashlight CD in the Northwest Cascade Mountains for the past four years where you are almost guaranteed rain most of the hiking season. The rainfly provides great protection for the tent and secures well in the wind. (point the leg area directly into the wind for the best protection). But the best part about the rainfly is that it creates a 6 sq. ft. vestibule for storing all your gear while it’s raining. Most lightweight tents don’t have a large vestibule at all. The bottom of the tent is really durable. I don’t use a footprint and the bottom has remained puncture free. Just be extra careful to remove all sticks and sharp rocks before setting up the tent. The inside is very rooming with a great head space which makes it easy to get dressed, move around, or drink coffee while you wait out the rain.

Great in the rain
I bought this tent the night before I backpacked the Hoh rainforest. I was sooo glad I did. The first night we tried it out, it was raining so hard, we were about the only ones left in the forest. Yet we emerged dry and to a peaceful solitude that can be found when there has been a mass exodus. Set up quick under the rain fly easily enough.
Fairly light, and works for a 6ft+ guy comfortably
Sets up easy and tears down easy. The weight is reasonable and packs small. It is one of the most comfortable tents i've ever slept in. Seem to be well made. Was out in a good downpour and kept dry.I've been very happy with it.
Light, Durable & Easy Setup
When it comes to gear, I've finally seen the light... And the Clip Flashlight CD, in particular.
I'd recently caught the "lightweight bug" and started investigating ways to trim down my car-camping-clunky gear, and my first target was shelter. My criteria was this: ligthweight, ease of setup, proven history and, er, under $200. After thorough investigation, the Clip Flashlight CD seemed to fit the bill to a tee. I was also impressed by the owner reviews of previous versions of this tent; even users of the seven and eight-year old models raved about it's quality. One could safely assume then that seven or eight years of revisions would signify Sierra Design's committment to customer satisfaction, and thus an improved product. They have not disappointed.
Let me preface the following by saying that I'm not in the least bit "hands-on" inclined. I expected the initial setup to be a disaster, and only looked forward to getting it out of the way and trying again tomorrow. Why? For some odd reason, there were no directions included! Oh, the horror that would ensue, right? Well, being somewhat of a newbie to all this, I took one look at the unpacked tent, poles, stakes and rainfly and fretted over not getting that engineering degree.
Alas, in but ten minutes the tent was standing! Honestly, I can't think of one single way for Sierra Designs to make this more intuitive. The poles assemble easily, then attach directly to the clips on the tent. I couldn't stake the whole shebang down in our living room, but a few well-placed chairs did the trick. The rainfly secures easily, as well. Not much to say - just cover the tent, clip the fly to the snap-buckles and voila.
Have you ever driven by a house and marveled at how small it was, then one day entered it and became astounded at how spacious it was? This tent is exactly like this. Why? One remnant from my car camping gear is going to be a twin air mattress. Heavy, I know, but back problems preclude me from taking to the bare ground or even standard camp pads. Before I first entered the tent I thought there was no way my matress would fit, especially once fully inflated. Well, toss your worries aside, because at this point I'd expect the Clip Flashlight CD to gently rouse me from sleep in the morning and start my coffee - the mattress fits perfectly while still providing enough room so that you don't feel like you're trapped in an MRI tunnel.
Complaints? Nary one. If you're going to sleep two, however, it's best you know the person biblically, because odds are by morning you will anyway ;) It's perfect for my needs - solo weekend treks into the great unknown. I'm altogether pleased with this purchase and wouldn't hesitate to spend my hard-earned dollar on a Sierra Designs product again.
Great size for backpacking but leaky
I purchased a Sierra Design clip flashlight tent in 1998 and within a year it was leaking badlly. I did not tear or abuse the tent. I purchased this tent because I am an avid packpacker (currently doing the AT in sections) and it is so small and easy to carry in my pack. I have put sealer on the tent numerous times (including this past week) and it still leaks. I am leaving for a two weeks' section of the trial on September 15! Perhaps I just had the misfortune of purchasing a defective tent, but I am so disappointed in this leaking problem. Sam L. O'Dell, 1175 Riverside Rd., Bluff City, TN 37618 phone: (423) 538-6464
