Kill two birds with one shirt
January 14, 2014
I bought this for a very specific use. It's my motorcycle baselayer for cooler temps. For that it seems to work wonderfully. Normally I would wear a base layer and if it's cold I would add something to break the wind. Now on a motorcycle this is only needed on the chest area, a 360 degree windproof garment only makes you sweat when it's underneath two other layers. The windproof barrier has a 1cfm rating, which for all intents and purposes is windproof. Sure, it's not 0cfm like gore windstopper but it's more than enough. It would work on a bicycle as the only barrier, so on a motorcycle at 75mph with a motorcycle jacket over it it works wonders. The merino wool itches the first time you wear, just bear it, it will go away after a while or after a wash. The collar does itch my neck, but on a bike I am constantly turning my head past my shoulders to check for traffic, this would not affect the vast majority of wearers. I'd love it if they made a crew neck version of this or if they offered the windproof layer on a heavier base layer. Merino wool is thin and delicate, it most likely would not last on a thru hike of the Appalachian trail but few garments will. Take care of it and it should last you a very long time. I personally do not like the "sporty or outdoorsy" color combinations, I prefer my garments in neutral or normal colors so that I can wear them out to dinner as well as during my adventures. I wish they made one in all black, but that's just being picky I guess. Cost is high, but I got it on sale for half off, even then it was a bit high but merino wool just isn't cheap. Fit is halfway between compression and loose. If your specific need can use this combination then this would be a great base or secondary layer.Pros: Build quality, Performance, multiuse, Cons: Cost
