Functional Base Layer
March 30, 2012
I recently got this shirt and used it for the first time this week. My intention for this shirt is to use it as a base layer and since I am always overheating I wanted something lightweight with minimal warmth. I found the weight to be comfortable under my softshell and on its own. I have not used it long enough to know about durability, which seems to not be as good with wool compared to polyester, but nothing about the shirt led me to think it would be a problem. I really like the long body of the shirt. It easily stayed tucked in even while wearing a backpack. This makes base layers so much more comfortable that I am always surprised how many are too short. Another review recommended sizing up, I disagree. I am 6'4" and 220lbs and got my normal XL and it fits perfect. I kind of wish it had thumb loops, but I rarely use them so it is not a big deal for me.
Great Baselayer for hiking

I use this here in Pennsylvania during the colder months up in the Pocono Mtns. It is a terrific base and breaths well. Depending on conditions I only use a micro fleece on top with a light shell if necessary to cut the wind. As it warms up I loose the shell and micro. I run hot so if you do to you can get away with this solo with temps in the 40-50 range. I'm 6'3" @ 205 lbs. I love the fit of the XXL. Another great Smartwool product.
