Great boot socks
April 01, 2012

These socks are well made, perfect form fitting, and well cushioned all over. It is a very comfortable and warm sock inside a boot. They are good as new after washing. I hope they stay that way for a while.

Favorite!
September 30, 2011

These are my favorite socks for winter! Very warm, comfortable, great fit. I know they say you can tumble dry on low, but I let them air dry thinking that will probably help the socks have a longer life span.

Excellent socks
April 05, 2011

I've been using the light and medium weight PhD socks for a few years now and they're the only socks I use for hiking. The tight fit, the double toe and heel and the fabric make for no rubs on my feet and excellent padding. These heavier PhDs are excellent too and I like them well enough so I may buy my next pair of boots a bit bigger so I can use them. They definitely have more bulk to them than the lighter PhDs so be aware of this when buying them to go in the same boots you've used the lighter socks in. Wool socks shrink some in the drier so be a bit careful. I wash and dry them as with any clothes but it does mean that over time they get a bit smaller. Doesn't seem to bother me though, they still fit fine.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, padding
Comfort: 5 / 5
Durability: 5 / 5
Quality: 5 / 5

best cold weather sock I've ever used
January 10, 2011

This sock is unreal. I wear smartwools all the time and finally got this to use in a cold weather adventure race and it responded wonderfully. As per all smartwools, it's incredibly comfy and holds up well. What sets this one apart is the beefiness. When they say heavy, they mean it (compared to most smartwools anyway). Dries super fast, even in cold weather, which is a great feature but one you hope to not have to use. I can attest to the fact that doing several creek crossings in right at freezing temps, even wearing incredibly ventilated shoes (Salomon XA Pro 3D, not the gore-tex ones), these socks dried out pretty quickly and I was surprised how soon my feet went back to being warm after being fully submerged. Great cold weather sock. I can't see wearing them really any other season and if your shoes are snug there might be some issues there but warm socks are expected to be thicker. I've had thicker socks that didn't seem to be nearly as warm.

Great for Snow Camping

These are thicker than I anticipated- which I'm happy about. I was wanting a really heavy all wool sock, and these are it! Soft, thick and well made. Great purchase.

Warm, sturdy, and well-fitting
December 26, 2010

I got these socks as a gift. I needed a heavy sock for winter cycling. I wear them with a waterproof, winter cycling shoe that is made to wear with a heavy sock (think roomy). These socks are perfect. They are very warm, breathe well, and fit perfectly. I love the arch support and the way they fit at the toe and heal. Fit was especially important to me because I needed to avoid bunching up and seems in the wrong place causing hot spots. I also plan to wear these socks when snowshoeing.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, warm, fit like a glove

Blister Free!
December 23, 2010

These socks may appeal to those who are susceptible to getting blisters on the heels of their feet during active sports. I purchased these socks for my Dad who is an avid x-country skier and he loves them! The extra padding offers relief from abrasion and blisters. Very long lasting as well! Highly recommended and Altrec guarantees all their products anyway, so nothing to lost trying them out.

Pros: Great design, Lasts forever, Performance
Cons: Cost
