Sleek and Simple

Smartwool base layers are fantastic. They do run small - I had to go up a size from what I usually wear in outdoor utility brands. The fabric is smooth, soft and snug, which is what you want if you plan to layer it during the winter. Best of all, it breathes. I prefer natural fibers to synthetic against my skin, and wool is perfect. I had no problem with the sleeve length as other reviewers mentioned. The purple stripe pattern is beautiful and I think it will work well on its own with a pair of jeans in the fall. It's expensive, but this shirt will definitely be a staple this winter and is well worth it!

love the fit and warm of Smartwool! Works great on a hike, super warm on the ski hill, and extremely comfortable for wearing around the house on a cold winter day!
My best base layer

I am a big fan of merino wool outdoor clothes and I was usually going for Icebreaker, but with this amazing long underwear, I just switched sides! This Smartwool next-to-skin top is so soft and comfy that I want to wear in my everyday life as well as on camping trips. I strongly recommend this base layer. And it's so cute as well...! A perfect piece of clothing.

I've been a big Patagonia Capilene base layer fan for the part few years, but after trying these tops out, I think I'm going to make the switch to Smartwool. What I love most about these thermal tops is that they're 100% wool, with no synthetics, so they don't have that sort of slimy, slippery feel that other brands' (like Patagonia) baselayers can have. These are warm and somewhat fuzzy, without being at all itchy. The tops also have surprisingly flattering shoulder seaming details, which I like. My only complaint is that they feel a tad small. I am 5' 5", 130 lbs., and am usually a Small, but the small in these feels a tiny bit too snug, and the sleeves are maybe an inch too short. Not enough to go up to a Medium for me, but... Just a heads-up.

Super comfortable merino wool base layer. Fits snug to the body so if you don't like tight-fitting layers definitely size up one. I'm 5'7" 140lbs and the medium fit perfectly but definitely form-fitting. Not itchy, purchased in both the purple and sunrise and both cute colors. Haven't washed yet but haven't had problems with shrinking in other Smartwool items as long as I lay them out to dry.
Pros: Build qualityVery Nice!

This is my second Smartwool top of this style - the first, I purchased about 3 years ago. The fabric of this top seems a bit less substantial than my older top, though the fabric is also softer. Construction is excellent. The fit is also changed from previous years - it is probably more "true to size" than it used to be, so the Small I ordered is a bit larger than expected (but still fine)...it is also longer in length. I would definitely recommend...I have always been thrilled with Smartwool's products!

I currently own the microweight tops but needed something a bit more substantial for layering for my trip to Fairbanks, AK in March. I received the 2 tops I ordered and I am so happy with the weight & sizing. After reading all the reviews, I ordered a size up (medium, I am size small, 5"5, 134) per recommendation and the tops fit perfectly. Thanks to those who posted their reviews. As far as the midweight and feel of fabric goes, I just started to wear Smart Wool 1 year ago and I absolutely love the product line. The microtops for me are too thin as stand alone but this midweight is incredible comfortable, warm and very washable. I am looking forward to wearing the midweight as a stand alone top here in the PNW, yet being able to layer in Fairbanks. I ordered one more top in a 3rd color as well as ordering a midweight for my husband because I really like the weight of this Smart Wool.

I'm a Northface fan and been looking for a good quality, warm and comfortable crew underlayer for a while. Feel disappointed after purchasing a couple underlayer by Northface and didn't find the one I like. After reading all good reviews of smartwool long sleeves under-garment, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did it and I love this smartwool crew pullover. It's a good product. If you feel cold and have to wear sweaters or fleece shirts all the time in wintertime, I suggest you to try this one. One tip on sizes, buy one size smaller if you like it tight as your skin. It won't make you itchy but will definitely keep you warm or even hot!

In general I love Smartwool - great company and great products. This top fits well - I'm 5'4", size 2 but have shoulders and C/D cup bra. Size small works great, maybe a touch big, but comfortable and warm. Works in warmer weather as single layer or in cold weather as base layer under expedition weight top or vest. Good purchase!

These are nice enough to wear alone or as a base layer. Don't seem to shrink up much at all. These are a little to heavy weight for Spring and summer. But they fit the bill for winter. Wash up nicely on gentle and seem to get even softer with washing. Love these for Winter. Sizing seems right for me. I got medium. I am 5ft 2 - 105 lbs.

I love my smartwools and this one is very fun. This was a great deal and I'm glad to find this site. The fit is true to size and it is a go to piece - keeps you warm in the cold weather and can be worn by itself for a walk or under a jacket to the office. I am a large (size 12) and it fits perfectly. It wears forever too.

change in Smartwool sizing

Smartwool makes very high quality and warm baselayer items (and socks). If you've bought their baselayers in the past, please note that you will probably need to go up a size, especially in the bottoms. I took my regular size in the top, and stretched it a bit and it works OK - but I have to return the bottoms. I'll mention that more when I review the bottoms.
