Variant Helmet
March 17, 2012
Great helmet at a great price (purchased during Altrec's winter clearance) !!! BOA fit system allows for a perfect fit. I found the helmet quite warm on zero degree days and with enough ventilation for the warmer days. Be cautious with fitting of goggles; I wore a large size goggle which I found to be too big for the helmet.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Cons: be cautious with fitting of gogglesGreat helmet with one minor flaw

This is my first ski helmet. As a long-time Giro bike helmet owner, I originally wanted to stick with the brand I knew. The Smith Variant seemed to suit my needs and budget better though. I love this helmet. It fits great and is plenty warm. The easy ventilation adjustments came in handy during warmer spring skiing, too. Like all helmets that cover your ears, it does dampen sound a bit. But not so much that you can't hear. The mesh panels over the ears are a thoughtful feature. My only complaint is the adjustment of the chin strap. It could definitely be easier and more straightforward. In my case, by the time I lengthened the strap to a comfortable position, it wouldn't stay in the built-in loops that are designed to keep the strap from dangling under your chin. Overall, this is a minor gripe though. In the end, this is a great, well-built helmet that feels like it will last forever.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: chin strap adjustmentExcellent Helmet

This helmet is super comfortable and easily adjustable. Very pleased with the fit and finish and can't wait to get it on the slopes. Can't comment on the durability or performance, but I expect it to be great.
Pros: Great design, Build qualityJanuary 16, 2013
The pads in my 10 year old helmet disintegrated, so I upgraded to the variant. Sliding vents were a key feature and no brim. Variant was comfortable and met both needs. Side note, brims may look cool, but when you put your googles up on your helmet the get in the way.

This sucker fits perfect. I bought it as a gift and the recipient couldn't be happier. I was worried about the fit, but it fit true to recommendations and this thing has some serious style. Also, way more attractive in person.

I recently purchased this helmet before a 3-day weekend of Boarding out in CO. I procrastenated on buying one until the week of the trip, but luckly with the sites quick turn around I got it in just 3 days. I have used other helmets in the past and I would constantly be taking them off at the bottom because my head would get too hot. The adjustable vents on this thing are awesome. I could keep them closed for the cold mornings, and then open them to keep me cool as it warmed up. After just one face plant on a black diamond I was more than satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Great design, PerformanceLightweight and Comfortable

I hadn't been skiing for about 10 years and decided that I should start wearing a helmet. I was overwhelmed with all of the different choices. A friend of mine recommended the Smith Helmets and I did some research and the Variant was the best one out for me. I am happy with my purchase, it fits my head well and keeps it nice and warm. The vents open and shut easily when the weather changes from very cold to spring like conditions.

Great Helmet

I recently replaced my Giro Fuse with the Smith Variant and I couldn't be more pleased with the change. The ventilation is far superior as is the lining. The fit is much more adjustable and I feel much more protected due to the design, which is more substantial without adding weight. Lastly, because of the vents in the leading edge, my goggles don't collect snow on the top and fog less. Overall, a great purchase and value.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value, Lasts forever, PerformanceTop Notch Helmet

I tried this helmet on at a ski lodge last winter and the fit was excellent. What sold me is Smith's top notch high quality products. The helmet has a comfortable light weight feel so it has no pressure points after wearing it all day. I like the finger tip adjustment in the back. Very simple and easy to use. And, it's warm for cold weather. The ventilation can be opened for warmer days. Overall a Top Notch product.

I've used this helmet for the past year in Colorado. I love the fact that I can open the vents on warm spring ski days and close the vents when the temp starts to plummet. Very comfortable as well and fit is spot on.
