Functional Specifications:
- Alert 9-1-1 emergency responders to your exact location. SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes until power is depleted or 911 is cancelled.
- Request help from friends and family in your exact location. SPOT sends one message every 5 minutes for one hour or until Help is cancelled
- Check in and let contacts know where you are and that you’re okay. SPOT sends three identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those three messages is delivered.
- Send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress using Google Maps. SPOT sends one message every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until SPOT is powered off.

I have not used it in the field but in local testing, using both the "check in" and the "tracking" modes it is working exactly right. It pin-points the location to within a few feet for check-in's and these were tested in overcast conditions from a house window. The track was done from a car and these worked as advertised. In summary, I an impressed and will be using it for cross country paraglider flights.

I'm an over the road trucker, i use it with the tracking feature enabled all the time. It gives my wife and family piece of mind that i'm alright. When i shut down to sleep, i turn it off. a fresh set of batteries lasts about 3 months in tracking mode when used 5 days a week for 14 hours a day... walmart has the best deal on the batteries. Track gets a bit confusing on the atv trails, but give last location accurately.

I bought my SPOT several weeks ago for use in Denali Park and in the Rocky Mountains. Check-in messages are handy to keep my family at ease when I am climbing and camping. Best of all, I was amazed by its reliability up in Alaska where it worked great. Has saved me a lot of money, and I couldn't be happier with the device.
