Disappointing
April 27, 2011
I'm sure this bag is incredibly durable and resilient. However, one of the most important features, for me, was the inclusion of backpack straps. It's here that the bag design fails. The straps are on top of the opening flap, so they need to be readjusted whenever you want to get things in and out. Beyond that, they're uncomfortable. They connect on both ends with nylon webbing/plastic buckles, which really doesn't feel good on the shoulders. If all you want is a sturdy duffel, it's probably great. If you're excited about the rare feature of backpack straps on a duffel, skip it.

Amazing Bag !!!!
March 05, 2011
This is the best made duffel bag I have owned. It will keep your contents dry (not waterproof, but pretty water resistant), the shoulder straps makes for easier travel, and lots of tie down points on the bag. The only thing I wish they would do differently is their sizes on the bags. The L and XL I purchased are more like M and L from other manufacturers. As long as you read the size specs prior to ordering, this should not be an issue. Overall, I am very happy with this product and glad I ordered them.

Great travel bag!
March 08, 2011
I bought this bag to go camping to Eagle Cave, WI with my 7 year old son. I knew there was going to be a lot of dirt and wanted something that would be easy to clean up. This bag did not disappoint. Super easy to clean, just use a damp cloth. Size was great and held eveything we needed for our overnight trip. Really like the straps that can be used like a backpack. Seems to be very strong and sturdy. I would definitely recommend this bag.

After reading such incredible reviews for this duffel bag I couldn't resist purchasing it before a trip to Asia. I chose the medium for my three week expedition and it was a perfect fit. I was able to use it as a carry on but still fit everything I needed. Good quality material with a carrying system that works really well. It's really easy to put the should straps on and off if you'd like to check it instead. The zipper is interlocking as well which I appreciated.

Great bag. Worth every penny.
August 17, 2012
This bag is a little pricey, but easily worth every penny. The thickness alone makes me want to take another trip just to use it. Backpack straps work fine instead of a single shoulder strap. It's North Face quality. Lifetime guarantee. Just get it, you won't regret buying this bag.
Pros: Great design, Build qualityTons of Room
February 03, 2011
I purchased a LARGE and it is huge. Love it because I can pack it up and use the should straps. Large is too big for a "carry on" so maybe go with a medium if you want to use it for air travel. I bought the orange for the bright color. Awesome bag!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Cons: very stiffFebruary 09, 2011
Bought this for 5 day ski trip and it worked great. I wanted something that would keep my clothes dry as the bag would be in back of a truck in the snow and the bag came through for me. Also, I usually wore the bag over both shoulders, so made it easy to carry my boot and ski bags at the same time. I hadn't bought anything from Altrec before either, but was happy that the product shipped quickly. Will be ordering from the site again.

Strong and durable duffel. I purchased both a Medium and Large. The bag is initially stiff and cumbersome, but in time the material was worn in and easier to pack and use. The shoulder straps are not the most comfortable for carrying a heavier load. Overall, a good duffel to transport equipment and know your stuff is protected!

I have had my small duffel for 3 months and it is ones of the most versatile bags I have ever had. Don't let the "small" designation fool you. This is a very roomy duffel. It is the perfect size for an airline carry-on and I can pack in a weeks worth of warm weather clothing.

Excellent Bag
February 19, 2011
We used the large bag for a scuba diving trip - fit all gear and fins perfectly with room to spare. we also purchased the small as a carry on bag. great products - highly recommend.
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Great valueFebruary 25, 2011
Bought the large size duffel & it's very roomy - will hold plenty of ski gear. I like the many alternative ways to carry the duffel using the variety of attached straps, giving you the ability to hand hold it, carry it over a shoulder or as a backpack. However, when full to capacity it's very deep & becomes awkward to wear as a backpack - definitely too big for a small sized female. Very durable, water resistant material which looks like it'll give years of service. A couple of extra pockets would have been useful. All in all I'm very pleased with it, although for my size I think a medium duffel would have been easier to manage.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of useGreat Duffel!

This is a great duffel. It's solid and durable. I ended up getting the small for use when traveling. It's a great carry-on bag when flying on 2-3 day trips. I highly recommend this duffel. You won't be sorry.

Well this bag is really awesome, I have not used it very much yet, it seems to be a very strong and durable bag, I bought the medium size and it works perfectly for me, what I do is rock climbing, I packed my 70 meters rope, 4 harnesses, 2 pairs of climbing shoes, 2 helmets, and a lots of devices and equipments for rock climbing. It has enough space for other small things. So in this way I do not have to carry two o more backpacks for take all my climbing gear to the crag. The daisy chains and the compression straps are excellent, it has very easy access too. It is very comfortable for carry in many ways. I choosed the Blitz blue and is a really pretty color. I really love this bag, if you have the money, you should buy this bag, it is a really versatile bag, you could use it for everything. I will buy the large size for pack all my camping gear for my very long trips.

February 14, 2011
I have wanted one of these bags for years, and purchased the Medium size to use primarily as a rugged airline carry-on for ski trips and fishing trips. I wanted a bag that could go right from the plane to the back of a pick-up truck (then to a boat, on the trail, etc.) The sizing is generous, more than enough volume to fit a ton of gear for a 3-4 day excursion. My ski boots easily fit, along with my primary ski layers. The compression straps are a great feature to shrink the bag (when not fully loaded) to comply with airline specs, and the shoulder straps make it easy to haul around. I've been critical of many TNF products made in recent years, but this one, so far, appears to be built very well. There is a layer of cordura on the outside bottom of the bag to handle the extra wear and tear (on the exterior of the the PVC), which I didn't realize before I bought it, but am glad is there. The price is high, but I think warranted now that I saw the construction firsthand. The bag is still fairly new for me, but I see it being part of my collection for years to come. Get one!

Great Bag
December 04, 2011
I was torn between the Small and Med. I plan on using this for a bag to haul all my essentials to work but also use it as a carry on bag when I fly. I am glad I went with the small, it is perfect and is just under the allotted measurements to use as a carry on.

Great bag for little 3-4 days trips. Great quality. Easy to hold like a duffel bag or fits on shoulder like a backpack nicely. Highly recommended. This is an awesome bag. Big enough for a long trip and durable enough for the airlines. The fact that it is waterproof other than the zippers is great. the carry handles and the backpack straps are handy if you need to carry something else. You wont be disappointed with this bag. i have the Large.

This bag is super tough. I was a little concerned with getting the large over the extra-large, but after seeing the XL in a store where I live, I'm glad I chose the large. It has plenty of room! The XL is like a big hockey bag and you may have a tough time with it on planes (baggage size). Highly recommended!

Great product, great price and speedy shipping. What more can you ask for? My old duffel bag cannot compare to the durability that the North Face Base Camp Duffel offers. The bag offers ample room and can take a beating. Think about all of the wear and tear a bag goes through. Whether it's used at a camp site, tossed around at an airport or carried back and forth from home to the gym. Don't you want to invest in something that can be used year after year? Go with the North Face Base Camp Duffel. You won't regret it!

What a great duffel bag! The base camp duffel is very large and durable. You fit all you stuff in for long camping trip. Great is also that is pretty much water proof and has a small pocket in the top (for documents etc.). This duffel will last forever and I can highly recommend it.

A great bag for holding and storing ski gear, the snow just bounces off the fabric. The bag is nearly indestructible and can hold all sorts of items with edges, points and shapes. You can easily strap items to the outside of the bag due to plenty of loops where you can add your own straps. A rather high price point but this is a long term investment.

This bag is nice and sturdy! I got the size L and in Orange. I like that I can fold it down and pack it into the little pack/storage bag it came with. Perfect for all your climbing/trail running gear and you can hose it down if it gets muddy. I would definately recommend this bag for traveling with your gear as well. I really like the Orange color too so I had to get it! Should last me a very long time too!

The Last Duffle You'll Ever Need To Purchase
July 23, 2011
The North Face is known for their renowned quality and durability. This bag is no exception, I purchased the XL because I'm going to be living abroad for the next 2 years and it is MASSIVE. I am going to be able to fit everything I need in it. I have also used it for camping and the backpack straps work fantastically and with the lifetime warranty The North Face has, you can't go wrong with this purchase. Go for it! Never Stop Exploring!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueSeptember 09, 2011
Great concept. I was expecting a stronger material. It looks good now, but I can already see it wearing slightly and I only use it as a gym bag right now. The small is the equivalent of a large backpack. I am able to pack a few days worth of clothing and an extra pair of shoes in it.
Pros: Great design, Ease of use, Cons: CostOwn several, given more as gifts
April 01, 2011
Wonderful duffel. I have one in small (meets carry on dimensions for airlines all over the world) and two mediums (which can be forced into such dimensions if not overpacked). I now use this bag instead of a backpack during international travels. The bags are sufficiently distinctive that they are difficult to lose, reasonably water resistant, and, despite the combined attempts of baggage handlers, curs, and myself, indestructible. Moreover, though not as comfortable to carry as a multi-day backpack, they are comfortable enough that I have never regretted leaving my pack at home. I bought my first over ten years ago and it has travelled to five continents. It is well used but many decades away from needing replacement. My other two have been to 3 continents and strapped to many different modes of transport from auto to motorcycle to bicycle. They look pretty much new. I have no need for another. But, I now give these as gifts, mostly to high school and college graduates. The excited and grateful faces show the mark has been hit. A "No-buyer's-remorse" purchase.

I own 3 of these bags, a small version, which I use for 1-2 day travel around for Business. I love the fact that it compacts down, and is small enough for a carry on, or if you so happened to buy a bunch of heavy small items its durable for Airport Abuse. I have also used the small for just an over night bag camping and dont need to worry about it snowing or raining with the waterproof material. The water just beads right off keeping my stuff dry. I was so impressed with this bag, that I bought 2 more both Larges, for traveling and just storing my equipment in the storage shed. The shoulder straps, and compression straps make this bag very easy to tote around and haul.

A bag like no other

If you need a bag that is dunk proof (Some what waterproof) and strong and easy to carry this is for you. Seriously a great bag. It is comfortable. Obviously not as comfortable as a dedicated backpack but this does the trick. Highly recommended. (I have purchased the Medium and Small. I recommend the small for weekend trips and the medium for anything over 5 days).

Not a flimsy bag
April 08, 2010
This is a very solid, well-built, heavy-duty bag. (It's not one of those flimsy duffels, and it won't fold flat in a suitcase as an extra bag, but it can withstand the tribulations of checked luggage.) The small is still rather roomy. Even when filled with heavy stuff, it is still reasonably comfortable to carry as a backpack. Unless it is really overstuffed, it will fit into the overhead rack and makes a good carry-on. I also have a medium, and it is a very roomy bag; good for checked luggage, but too big for a carry-on.
Outstanding Travel Bag
June 06, 2010
This is the perfect heavy duty bag which will never let you down- from a week on vacation in the City, to hauling your mountaineering gear around for an ascent in the Himalayas, to stuffing with books when you move. Waterproof, bomb proof, and the Large size comfortably meets all airline regulations for the hold(I always worry a super fussy check-in clerk will refuse to put the XL size bags in the hold on size grounds). Perfect.
Such a great bag I bought it in different sizes.

October 29, 2010
so originally i made a purchase of the LARGE duffel bag in white and when i got it i realized i made a mistake, it is HUGE...so a while went by and i decided that i had to return it because it was way too big for my needs, and luckily they had a black in small in stock so i was able to exchange it. the perfect size bag, much much better than i had hoped in construction and in size. i was not expecting the small to still be so large, it is larger in size than my pullman which i have travelled with for years and since this is softside it will be able to be manipulated much more easily into aircraft... like i said the large is gigantic, it will fit 2 1/2 of the small bags inside of it. so if you are planning on traveling with every article of clothing you own then get a larger bag, if you are planning on a long weekend with lots of items still, then the small should fit your needs. i don't even need to reiterate the notion of this bag being the de-facto duffel, it's all over most every mountain top on earth, so easily it will stand up to whatever you throw at it.

Perfect track day gear bag
April 16, 2011
I was looking for a bag to haul all my motorcycle gear to track days. After spending a fair amount of time researching what was available, I settled on the North Face Duffel. I first bought the XL size thinking the L dimensions seemed a bit tight for leathers, back protector, helmet, boots, gloves, and a few misc. items. When the XL arrived, I stuffed everything into the bag and there was so much room left over I could probably have put two of everything into it. I regrouped and got the L size and it is just perfect for track days. All the gear mentioned fits perfectly and with the back straps it's a breeze to carry around. The construction and components are top shelf. I can see using this bag for lots of other things.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useExcellent travel bag
June 20, 2010
I purchased the size M and it was perfect for the seven day trip on a boat. Nice to be able to collapse it for storage. The size S might be better to use as a backpack with the straps, as the size M was pretty heavy after filling to capacity. There is no way to store the backpack straps and there are no pockets, but still the quality and durability make up for it.
The best duffel around.
March 24, 2010
I travel a lot and this duffel has stood the test of time. Large is as big as you'll ever need. Ridiculously sturdy, easy to carry (as a backpack). One suggestion is make sure the straps are all cinched down, they can get caught in the baggage machinery.

Just took this duffel on a recent trip to Glacier National Park and, not surprisingly, it held up incredibly well. Water resistant and very durable, you won't be disappointed. Pound for pound, I think it is the most durable camp duffel on the market. There is a reason that you see TNF duffels being used on expeditions to Everest, etc.
Great For Lots of Gear
November 09, 2011
Bought this bag for a week long hunting trip and needed carrying capacity. This bag definitely has it. Enough room for hunting clothing, outerwear, boots, and still enough room for a week's worth of clothes. Same durable base camp material that I know stands up to abuse. Would be nice if it had a couple of extra smaller pockets built in, although I know that is not common in a duffle. Great product, will be worth the money due to it's lifespan.

Chose this duffel for my son to use when playing Ultimate. He plays in all kind of weather including wet, sometimes it's having to put a bag down on dewy grass. The Base Camp Duffel being waterproof is perfect for Ultimate. The duffel stays open when accessing his stuff. Being able to carry the bag using the shoulder straps is another plus. This duffle is constructed to take heavy use, so I expect that this bag will last for many years.

Best I could find for my desired usage.
September 30, 2011
Used this bag for a couple trips so far, still looks brand new. The removable backpack straps are a big help when carrying more than a few hundred feet, but I would not want to go more than a mile using them. I have wonder about the long term durability of the top backpack strap attachment point, if anything goes wrong I think that would be it. This is my second one, I might try to get one in each size. Definitely recommend, seems tough as nails, if I manage to break it, I'll update.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great valueGreat Pick

Purchased the bag in advance of annual fishing trip to Alaska. The variability of weather conditions requires that we bring warm weather, cold weather and foul weather clothing. The bag had room to spare and is designed to keep everything dry. The shoulder straps made carrying through airports and to the float plane a snap.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great valueGreat Bag, Perfect for Travel
May 12, 2011
We have been looking for some time for a good bag for travel, particularly international travel that might involve trains, boats, and buses. We needed a bag that wouldn't be a huge backpacker's backpack, but would be easily carried around. After much debate, we purchased the small base camp duffel rather than the medium. We were searching near and far for something that would size as a carry-on, be durable, have straps for carrying since roller bags aren't good for cobblestone and regular duffels don't distribute weight well. We haven't really used the bags yet, but I think they're going to be perfect--they're super light, they have the waterproofing coating on the inside in case we get stuck in a rain storm, and the straps are nicely padded, but can also be tucked inside/removed if we were ever to want to check the bags and not have the straps out and getting caught in baggage belts. The small is surprisingly large, and I think we can each pack (lightly) and comfortably for a two-week warm weather trip. Clearly, if you're using the bag for technical purposes or gear carrying, a small won't take you as far, but it would be a great size for a day of climbing or a smaller bit of gear. They are also a nice size for a weekend trip. So psyched we purchased these--we'll be using them forever.

Pros: Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: CostThe BEST duffel bag ever...
April 01, 2011
I own a bunch of expedition-quality duffel bags from several manufacturers, but the North Face Base Camp Duffels are the ones I use by far the most often. I own this bag in both large and XL sizes, and I've taken them on outings all over the world. Skiing, climbing, kayaking, traveling - this bag can do it all. It's made out of the toughest materials, with YKK zippers and a waterproof tear-resistant polyester/nylon shell. The zippers aren't waterproof, like a dry bag, but they hold up well to rain, and the rest of the bag is completely sealed. Carrying options include end handles, regular top handles and removable padded backpack straps. If you need to carry the bag for more than a few yards, the backpack straps are a great help. The top has a C-shaped opening, which makes it very easy to access the bag. I have had one of these bags fall off of the back of a truck going 35 miles an hour, with no damage to the bag except for some scuffing. They are truly the toughest bags I own. I expect these bags to last a lifetime.

Turn around time is great! Had positive experience with a previous purchase and this time continued on those same lines. Regarding the product itself, having owned the medium size, I wanted the smaller size for smaller loads. I don't agree with the waterproof comments as I recall the seams and zipper allowing some moisture. The bag is durable and I use waterproof stuff sacks when I wish to limit the chances of moisture.

These are tough bags, swallow tons of gear, and being able to sling it "backpack style" with the padded straps makes all the difference in the world. My only complaint is that the zippers, although durable, can be tricky to slide, especially when the bag is either jammed full or so understuffed that they don't lay flat. But that nitpick aside, it's still a go-to classic.

Our firefighting crew uses these XL duffels for fire gear and the L ones for personal gear. The addition of the flap over the zipper has greatly improved the "waterproofness" of the bag. And they can be worn as a backpack.

My wife complains that I buy too many bags to carry "my stuff" but when she saw my new North Face Base Camp Duffel she changed her mind. She wants one for her Birthday but in Red. Need I say anything more!

I was very pleased with the durable construction of this bag. I purchased the bag for my climb up Kili in September and it more than fits the bill for my needs!

great bag. i use this when i ride my bike to and from work, it holds a lot, and doesn't move around on you when you ride. it is super durable, and the size small holds all i need. i pack change of outfit, bike clothes, shoes, bike lock, etc - and i wear size 12 shoes that don't take up much of the room at all in the bag. definitely worth paying for this nicer bag, cheaper duffel bags just dont give you what this bag does.

As everyone knows... the base camp duffel is bomber. Got the white one and was worried about it getting filthy but it repels dirt and whatever pretty well and any marks come off with an easy scrub.... I wouldn't wanna check a white one in on a flight though. The small size is perfect for a weekend or short getaway... backpack straps are money to carry backpack style or just use both and carry like a normal duffel. Wouldn't mind an outside or additional interior pocket though. Plan on getting the large size for me upcoming ski trip... can't wait.

This is by far the best duffel bag on the market. Keeps your gear dry when in the back of a truck driving snowboarding in a blizzard. Will likely last a decade. Backpack straps are very comfortable. Only con is people will be asking you "where can I get one?" when walking through the airport.

This is a great bag! We have two other in different sizes. They handle airport transportation well and the abuse of traveling . We have purchased other bags in the past and they never seems to hold up. Altrec.com has the best price on the net that I have found. Cheers

Simply put, this duffle is bombproof. You can feel quality and durability when you have it in your hand. I bought this to stow my skydiving equipment when traveling. This thing fits my rig, jumpsuit, and helmet with room to spare + I feel confident it will keep all the gear secure......and Altrec's price beats the competitors. What more could you ask for?

Fast shipping! Great product just as described. The product comes in the Factory packaging, so you know these are not any ordinary products lying around in some warehouse. I will definitely shop here again!
Tough and Reliable
April 21, 2011
I used The North Face Base Camp Duffel to haul gear to travel. In my TNF Base Camp Duffle I had a lot of sharp equipment but it didnÂ’t punch any holes in the bag. It's really tough and reliable. The shoulder straps are really great for traveling. It was much easier for me to carry the Base Camp Duffle around like a backpack than carry it by its handles. The compression straps really help take the stress off the zipper and material when you over stuff the bag like I did when traveling. The mesh pocket on the underside of the top flap is nice for separating out important small items. If you need a duffel bag to haul climbing gear or travel around the country or globe, you wonÂ’t find a better duffel bag than the Base Camp Duffel.

great duffel

i got this duffel to hold ski gear. The large held pants, jackets, long johns, socks, helmets, etc for 3 with room to spare. Zipper & fabric are stiff -- but to be expected since the bag is virtually indestructible. Contemplating the xl for bigger excursions - borrowed one from my bro & it fit a ton of stuff. He's had his for years.

TNF BombProof Duffle
November 28, 2011
I purchased a new North Face Base Camp Duffle in size XL in Zest Orange. It is replacing my eight year old Base Camp Duffle that had travelled over 200,000 air miles on numerous adventures -it is now in possession of my youngest son, who undoubtedly will have it for another 8 years without failure. The design of the bag has changed little over the years. The zipper is uber durable. The mesh top pocket makes quick access easy for those special items. The exterior fabric shreds that shower while sitting on the tarmac or before you can get your stuff under cover at your campsite. The external compression straps are great to compress a partially filled bag. The padding has been improved on the shoulder straps from my vintage bag. The only problem with the XL size bag is keeping the weight under 50 pounds for the airline baggage scales! Get one you can't go wrong!

Durable, Multi-Purpose Bag

I have used it as a backpack, carry-on, and dry bag of sorts inside my kayak. Maybe some interior side pockets would make this thing better, but it's pretty damn good as is.

I knew that I couldn't go wrong buying this duffle because I've owned other The North Face items and the quality is AMAZING when it comes to this brand. I've used this particular item for travel purposes to overnighters and it has done well for me. Durable, comes in various sizes and colors to meet your liking. I would recommend this to EVERYONE!

I bought the north face duffel bag in a small. It is the perfect size for me. I figure I'll be able to take it on short over night trips and I am also using it as a hockey coaching bag currently. Nice weight, great look, and easy to carry with the backpack straps. I am strongly contemplating purchasing a medium one too for longer trips! Happy buyer!
