While identical in capacity to the Backtrack 50 Adventure Travel Backpack, The North Face Doubletrack 25 is a rolling travel bag with a detachable 950-cubic-inch daypack. It uses a stowable technical pack suspension that easily tucks away when you're ready to check your bag and board the plane or train. The Doubletrack 25 doesn't have all the padded harness features (or pack rain cover) found on the Backtrack 50, but the curved lumbar area, canted hipbelt and lightly padded shoulder straps do give you more options than some travel carry bags that merely tangle you in a bunch of thin webbing. When you arrive at your destination, unclip the detachable 950-cubic-inch daypack for your short excursions and city tours. The daypack has tuck-in shoulder straps that firmly integrate the designs into the pack, so you're less likely to worry about the smaller pack breaking loose in luggage cargo holds (it would have to disconnect at four separate points). Inside the small daypack you'll find The North Face Universal padded sleeve, a removable compartment that can be used for a small laptop or a hydration reservoir (The North Face states that their Universal Sleeve will accommodate a 16-in. laptop--but your results may vary depending on the technology that you're packing). The Doubletrack 25 has an "ambidextrous" handle that's easily accessible and can be comfortably towed in either hand. A braided cable running through the top carry handle gives the Doubletrack 25 better security for locking, although it's up to you do decide how you want to protect the zippered pockets and daypack. Inside you'll find a large main pocket for pressed clothing or paperwork, plus internal compression straps and a mesh divider to hold contents in place. There's also an internal elastic daisy chain that The North Face added as a "clothing organizer" but this feature might take so pre-pack planning to figure out and properly utilize. If you're headed for remote urban destinations and you plan on having a weekend or more for downtime, the Doubletrack 25 travel bag with detachable daypack is a great travel component for work and play.
A Great Travel Companion!
Well engineered, designed and fully featured for business travel. Buy one - you won't regret it...
Best Travel Bag / Luggage ever made!!!
North Face has thought of EVERYTHING when they designed this pack / bag / suitcase. The bag fits all occasions and circumstances. I was literally blown away by how practical this bag is. It works as a regular travel suitcase yet when you finally reach your off-the-beaten-path destinations you just zip out the straps and it morphs into an incredibly comfortable backpack.
The bag is incredibly easy to load / unload. Unlike a traditional pack that you have to unpack to find that thing you accidentally packed in the middle you just - zip - grab it and zip again!
The other cool thing about this bag is the detachable day pack. It's a fully functioning backpack with a sleeve for your hydration pack, plus a bunch of other pockets for organizing your gear. Unlike other 'detachable' day packs that I have used in the past, this thing is easy on / off so when you hit the hotel or check-in it takes only a second and your on your way.
Speaking of check-in, there are some nifty little strap shortener doo-dads that will keep your straps from turning into confetti in the arms of automated baggage handling machines.
It looks good, takes a beating, the black color is low profile for areas that are a bit seedy and speaking of seedy - it has a cable attached to the top handle that can double as a place to help secure your bag to something in unsavory areas / hotels.
I would highly recommend this pack to anyone that travels for leisure or adventure and even better a combination of the two!!!
I'll post back again after a full trial test through China, Tibet, Mongolia, Macao and Cambodia.
Aloha!!!
Very heavy, hipbelt does not work and plastic breaks easily
This luggage is 12lb when empty. That's much heavier than the competition. You would think it'd be durable, but it has plastic on top which breaks very easily.
And the worst part is that the hipbelt does not work at all. There is a design flaw which allows the hipbelt to slide up, so all the weight ends up on the shoulders.
Nortface is a pretty good brand, but they are new to the luggage business and need to fix this it.
