The North Face FR720 Daypack

While the perfect life might be nomadic, the perfect underwear should stay put. Low-riding Active Hipsters have an extra-wide waistband and soft edging at the leg openings that won't wander or restrict. Ultra-soft and pliable, the fabric manages moisture and breathes, keeping you cool and dry. Solids and prints: 4.6-oz 96% nylon, 4% spandex. Stripes: 5.6-oz 94% polyester (70% recycled), 6% spandex.

The sack has an uncluttered, easily accessible design.
I sought a replacement for my duffel-style sport bag. I wanted something with enough internal carrying capacity for at least two sets of shorts and shirts as well as socks, headbands, wristbands, one pair of running shoes, knee pads, a 20 oz. water bottle, towel, and several table tennis rackets and balls. Additionally, I wanted the option to strap a jacket and perhaps pants to the bag's exterior in a pinch. I did not want a bag with side compression straps that obstructed access to the main compartment or zippers that would repeatedly snag on their protective flaps. The placement of the main compartment's zipper on the FR 720 is perfect for easy access, and the lack of extraneous straps aided access not only to the main compartment but to all pockets as well. The two straps designed for carrying a board are useful for carrying other large items such as insulated parkas, boots, and so on such that the total carrying capacity of the bag easily can exceed The North Face's stated 2,050 cubic inches. The carrying flexibility afforded by this design is one of the primary reasons I settled on this sack over the Surge, which I also seriously considered. The shoulder pads are comfortable, and the narrow profile insures that any load is carried closely to the body to minimize back discomfort. I tested the bag with just over twenty pounds and felt just a slight tugging on my shoulders that was not at all uncomfortable. This bag has a double bottom of which the inner bottom is extendable. The heavy-cloth exterior bottom of the bag can zip open to reveal--if desired--an inner-bottom fabric layer that can extend over half a foot (I did not measure precisely). In an emergency a person could utilize this extra carrying capacity simply by leaving the exterior bottom unzipped. Aside from the lack of exterior attachment points, which are of little concern to me, I found only one drawback to this pack so far (I have owned and used this ruck sack for only about two weeks): the carrying handle. Because I often carry multiple packs, I tend to wear the largest one and carry the other(s) in my hand(s). I found the narrow doubled-over fabric handle somewhat uncomfortable when carrying even as little as ten pounds for ten or more minutes. I easily resolved this problem by removing the stitching and unfolding the fabric handle. The widened handle is much more comfortable, but I recommend The North Face replace it with the handle currently used on either the Surge or Steep Tech 30, both of which appear to be lightly padded and even more comfortable.
