Awesome Backpack!!
March 24, 2011

I just upgraded to this backpack from a North Face Jester backpack that I've had for 8 years now. It was a huge improvement; the side straps are good for compressing the bulk and has perfect pockets to compartmentalize. I don't use the laptop section, but it is perfect for school/work stuff. The side mesh panels are wide enough to hold more than just water bottles and sturdy elastic to withstand movement. The elastic strap on the front is good for more trail/hiking use for the backpack (it can attach carabiners, shoes, towels, etc.). It can hold a larger capacity than average daily use backpacks and has comfortable shoulder straps and additional lumbar and chest straps for postural support.

Expected no less, and totally satisfied
July 14, 2012

I've gone through several other manufacturer's backpacks, and none of them were able to stand up to the beatings that I put them through. Not so with the North face packs I've bought. The Heckler had a surprisingly larger amount of storage space than I thought it would, and the single smaller front pocket itself is divided into enough smaller pockets that you will be able to keep track of all of your smaller possesions. With a pouch on each side of the pack that will hold a beverage bottle, you can easily carry two 20 oz drinks. The Heckler cost almost half of what I paid for a "boutique" pack, so that's a plus as well.

Lots of room for all your needs. Excellent construction - easy on and off. A great back pack for college students. This product is well-made, durable and something I would purchase again. I have previously purchased north face backpacks and they have lasted for years and years. I love to give them away as graduation gifts to friends' children going to college. They are also wonderful not only as school backpacks, but as hiking or traveling backpacks. The variety of pocket sizes is our favorite feature

August 13, 2011

I bought this backpack for my daughter who is starting college. She needed one to carry her laptop and books, but she also wanted it to look good. Loved the color and it is the perfect size. It holds her laptop and her books comfortably. She is very short and the it is not too big for her. Also, the straps on her shoulders make it very comfortable.

I will only buy North Face Backpacks
June 11, 2011

The heckler is an awesome backpack, with lots of space for everything I needed it to carry for school. I only wish it had more small pockets that I could stow phones, wallets, etc. I've owned 3 north face backpacks during my life (all for school), and have only purchased a new one when I was bored with the old one. One problem I had with this backpack after about 6 months was, because I had to pack it with such heavy books and binders, the top nylon hold began to tear on one side. It still held up, however just frayed on one side. Overall, great backpacks.

A Hit for My College Student
September 02, 2011

Purchased the ivory/blue Northface Heckler backpack for my daughter's first year in college. It's a beautiful backpack, the colors are even more striking in realtime than on the website pics. As always, Northface backpacks are the best out there as far as durability and spaciousness go. The extra padding in the shoulders are great, an absolute must-have with all the weight the students have to carry around. The sides on this backpack have expandable clips/straps too, for when you have to carry a laptop, books, and other supplies all at the same time. There are plenty of zipper compartments on the outside as well. You really can't miss in purchasing this backpack for a middle, high school, or college student. It's worth the extra cost.

the bag is nice and able to store quite a lot. the one annoyance i have is with the laptop sleeve/pocket. its useful when i have one in there but when i'm not storing a laptop there, it seems to take up unneccesary space with the little dividider/support thing that is at the bottom. other than that though, the bag is very comfortable and has many pockets for storing things.

This Heckler backpack has been with me at school and whenever I travel. It is extremely durable. When I am at school I am usually able to carry my notebooks (3-4) and my laptop, with water, and my personal items. The backpack does not feel heavy, and it supports my back all throughout the day while I am carrying it. When I am traveling, it carries everything I need for the whole day and then some. It has many convenient pockets, and I absolutely love it.

This is a pretty good backpack for normal use. However, please note that it is LONGER/TALLER than usual. That is, when I put a textbook inside it, it takes up only 2/3 of the space vertically, and theres 1/3 space available still. In addition, there are only 2 major compartments. The largest one has two small pouches for storage, the smaller one has a few pouches and a mesh pouch. It will store a lot, but it won't carry many small things. Lastly, there are a good amount of straps. The waist strap can be removed. The chest strap (connected via the shoulder straps) cannot. Just letting you know. Nonetheless, very good bag

Large capacity, comfortable backpack
June 08, 2012

I owned a North Face backpack for over a decade before it started to get holes and needed replacing. I am not disappointed at all with my new one. The little touches like mesh on the shoulder straps and the small pouch for an mp3 player or phone right on the front really make me love this pack. There are also two small velcro pouches on the inner portion of the backpack flap which nicely fit a wireless mouse. I bought it for grad school and it fits almost all of my textbooks complete with a padded pouch for my laptop. Despite those heavy loads, the backpack is still comfortable to wear. I really love the straps, they're very ergonomically designed. One issue is that the strap that is designed to wrap around your waist (when not in use) tends to catch on my jeans when I'm walking . I LOVE this backpack and I hope (but have no doubts) that it will last as long as my last one.

Bummer!
May 29, 2012

I had picked this pack out as my go to college pack this next fall based on its cool looks -- like the green plaid especially -- and also its great reviews. My Mom got it for me as part of my high school graduation gift -- I was very excited as it is hard to find this color now. However, after trying it out by filling the pack w/ the typical college load, including laptop, I found it has a serious design flaw. The zipper for the main opening is at the front of the pack and the laptop sleeve is at the back of the pack. It is very difficult to get my laptop in and out, especially when the pack is loaded -- and I have a small 14". I am very disappointed as the rest of the pack is awesome. But I know I would be frustrated dealing w/ this problem if I were to keep it, so am returning it. I have decided to get the North Face Recon instead which has 2 large compartments instead of the one, which makes laptop access much easier.

Pros: Build quality, Cons: design flaw

Great Bag for Students
December 17, 2009

My son helped carry books for a injured friend at school with his backpack and came home raving about this backpack. Loves the padding on the straps, compact size and laptop sleeve. Great construction all around. He tells me every week how much he loves this pack and he's went through a lot. With the amount of books students carry back and forth, appears to be a great investment

Perfect size, great capacity, built to last
December 30, 2009

I travel extensively and also carry a lot of large binders and my laptop for work, and this backpack is perfect for both. I wasn't even a backpack type of person, but the Heckler changed that as soon as it arrived -- and Altrec shipped it very quickly. The backpack is incredibly sturdy and feels very durable. I was amazed at just how much it can hold. It fit everything that once took me two large bags to carry -- and I still had room for more! I'm a 5'3" petite female, and though this bag runs on the large side, it's exactly the right size for me and for what I take on trips and to work. I wish I had this backpack when I was back in college, because it would have been much better than the dinky tote bags I used to carry. The straps on Heckler make carrying anything feel like a dream, and the secondary front pockets help keep smaller items organized. I will be using this backpack for years to come, I'm sure.

Heckler laptop Backpack
September 12, 2010

I purchased the Heckler laptop backpack for my 7th grade daughter. She loves it. The inside is quite detailed, with special lining for her laptop. Provides nice protection for the laptop. Inside there are many well structured areas to hold everything from pens and pencils to cell phone and ipod. The size seams a little long for a 7th grader but she, at 5'4" feels quite comfortable with it on her back. We ordered it in Pink plaid. The "pink" is so subtle my daughter feels it should have been called "blue" plaid, but loves it just the same. However, the inside structure is quite pink. Overall we would recommend this backpack for comfort, style and durability.

I am a student at a university and this was just the backpack I needed. It safely protects my laptop and holds all my books. The side straps really take pressure off of your back for heavier loads. I strongly suggest this backpack.

Great Backpack for the Money
February 11, 2012

This bag is extremely versatile which is a big plus in my book. As a graduate student I really like that the main compartment has a laptop sleeve that fits my 17'' screen perfectly, has enough room for several large books, a two inch binder, and room to pack in all the computer chargers and USB cords. The two additional pockets inside the main compartment allow me to carry my compact camera and mp3 player with ease. The pencil and pen organizer is well laid out and has the compartment it's in is large enough to accommadate a small notebook or two. As a hiker this compartment is prefect for storing all my day hiking supplies, like food, hydration sleeve, extra clothing, first aid supplies, etc. With the additional bungee straps and side compression straps I can carry much more than just the expected day hiking gear like a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and a larger coat. There also two additional mesh pockets for extra water bottles. There is also a small zipper pocket at the top of the bag which to me isn't deep enough to store much more then a set keys. The construction and fit is what to excepted from Northface. No major flaws to speak of really. And for the price I expect this backpack will last many years to come.

I was in the market for a new backpack as I've gotten into the habit of carrying one daily over the last year. I wanted one to use daily for work, on weekends for hikes and adventures and for international travel as a carry-on. After checking out all the major manufacturers, I narrowed it down to the TNF Box Shot and this pack. They have similar capacity and assembly quality, but the reasons I chose the Box Shot are that it had better organization with more pockets. and better materials were used in construction. If budget were a consideration, I'd definitely have chosen the Heckler since it's less than half the price and if I preferred one large compartment (as I do in my multi-day backpack) I would have gone with the Heckler. Now it's your turn to choose!

the bag is nice and able to store quite a lot. the one annoyance i have is with the laptop sleeve/pocket. its useful when i have one in there but when i'm not storing a laptop there, it seems to take up unneccesary space with the little dividider/support thing that is at the bottom. other than that though, the bag is very comfortable and has many pockets for storing things.

Very nice backpack, i love the look, love the feel. I wish it was a little bit larger, at least in the width dimension. However, it has a great cushion for my laptop, and the 2-compartments are perfect for the way I like to organize my stuff, and love how the side pockets fit my bottles/gloves easily.

Pros: Great design

Great Pack!
March 14, 2010

This is a great backpack! It's a little pricy but worth every penny, especially when it's being worn for the entire day. The shoulder straps are very comfortable and there is a good amount of back padding. This pack is great for a hike in the woods or a day at the amusement park. A must have.

Best Backpack I've Ever Had!
October 12, 2011

This is certainly the best pack I've ever had. As a law student, I have a lot of large textbooks I need to carry around. This pack can hold the books I need on a daily basis. This pack is also great for activities like bike riding and hiking. It is super durable, lightweight and has plenty of organizational pockets to hold gadgets.

Great choice for school load
August 23, 2011

I bought this for my daughter who is entering high school. She was using a JanSport previously, and 12 months of use totally trashed it. This new one is roomier and about as light. The zippers are smooth and sewn on well (no loose threads to get it stuck), and the straps have more cushioning. The back support was what first caught my attention about this model, and it feels sturdy and comfortable even when we loaded the bag up with books up to its full capacity (although that should not be the normal case in daily use). Of course the color is what bought my daughter, and I am happy to say that she loves it as much as I am assured of the support and comfort features. I will revise the 4 stars for durability once we have gone through 6+ months of use. All in all, I am happy with the choice, and we shall see if that changes down the road.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Cons: Cost

Good backpack for school
May 15, 2010

I really enjoy using this backpack everyday for school. It comes with a laptop compartment to hold your laptop and it also has plenty of room to keep binds, folder, and textbooks. Only downside is there is a lot of room so if you dont have that much to bring to school, you are left with extra space. I would definitely recommend this backpack.

Great look and durable
March 26, 2012

Was looking for a backpack that matched the color of my motorcycle and was durable since my last one ripped. I'm very pleased witht his product. Has pockets in every location that I need and is expandable with the straps or can straps can be pulled right to make it slimmer. Has a great look and I plan on using it for snowboarding and while riding my motorcycle.

Awesome backpack!
February 17, 2010

I absolutely love this bag. I got the Saratoga green and it's a really pretty color. There's so much room in the bag for your laptop and textbooks and still room to pack a lunch or throw in a sweatshirt on top. Overall great bag!

This backpack was the perfect size, seems to be durable enough. Love all the pockets.

not comfortable for my 6th grader
July 23, 2010

I bought it for my middle school daughter but i am returning it for a different one b/c she doesn't like the hard bar in the top of it. It is uncomfortable and stiff at the top. She may be too small for this style. We are looking for a different style north face now.

I have been using the same northface backpack since middle school. Now I'm entering college so I decided to get the same model because I know it's very durable and comfortable. I've never had a problem with Northface backpacks. It's great quality, spacious, and looks great.

Nice Surprise
October 17, 2010

For Christmas last year, I surprised my college student with this backpack. He loved everything about it and immediately put it to good use. Almost a year later, it is still being used a lot and in great condition...a great purchase in many ways! Altrec has also been a good company to do business with...

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

I love this backpack! It can carry everything I need for school plus my laptop. This bag is well worth the money. I have not used the bag for hiking yet but I'm sure it will be great. It even has a clip for a camel pack.

GREAT BACKPACK
October 30, 2010

I got this backpack last year for traveling abroad. I am very impressed with the amount of things it can hold. It has a separate layer for my laptop and everything else can fit right in. Initially I chose this backpack because of the design and once I got, I realized how great of a backpack it is.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use

Great backpack, looks solid and it is gianormous. My last northface backpack lasted five road hard years, it is still in working order, but it was just time for a new one. I am sure this one will get through the next five no problem.

Great Backpack!
February 24, 2013

This backpack was delivered before the date it was scheduled to be delivered. Most of my friends have North Face backpacks, so I was encouraged to get one for my own, since they told me they were VERY comfortable. I ordered this one, but the only bad part was that it was too big for me. I am a girl that is 4'11" so this back pack did not fit. Other than that, great choice and quality. I am actually going to invest in another North Face backpack with the dimension in mind this time. I am definitely ordering from Altrec in the future! Great service!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use

Great purchase!
March 08, 2010

I absolutely love my Heckler backpack! It has the perfect amount of pockets and space. Fits me very comfortably!

A great buy!
August 26, 2010

This is the best backpack I've ever purchased. It holds a lot without looking really bulky, and when you aren't carrying a big load, the side and bottom straps allow you to compress the pack down for an even slimmer look. The shoulder straps are nicely padded, and I love the mesh pockets on both sides. Being a college student who likes the outdoors, I love that there's plenty of room for books and a sleeve for my laptop, AND the pack is also durable and comfortable enough for all-day hikes. Highly suggested, and well worth the money.

perfect!
December 16, 2009

Got this as a gift for someone else - so much room in it - even by college student standards - I have the Northface Aurora Borealis and although I've been happy with it - I'd love one of these for myself now! the straps on the bottom and sides make it look like it's not gigantic and make it more compact for when you're not using the space while it fits just about whatever you could want - textbooks, laptop and a change of clothes at LEAST. overall, I would definitely recommend this
