Excellent Choice
October 28, 2011

I am very happy with my purchase, the jacket fits to a "T". It is durable and allows for free movement of arms without binding. The tailored style is functional and doesn't hinder wear of equipment. The outer shell blocks wind exceptionally well and is great in the rain as well. It also looks great.

What a Jacket.
February 07, 2013

This jacket is an extremely well made, insulated, and waterproof jacket. I definitely see where and when I could be wearing this jacket. It is a little bulky, so it's not exactly an everyday use jacket in my opinion. I'm 5'6'', got the small, and it's a little big, but I mean, it's supposed to protect me from the elements. I was looking for something more along the... everyday use, "when it gets REALLY cold at night in Southern California" jacket, but I got more of the ... "Lets go to mammoth and snowboard"/ "its hurricane season up in here". All in all, if you're looking for an everyday jacket, the fleece part would be nice, but you may not have to get the triclimate for that. Maybe get the fleece, and the venture jacket for the outside part. But if you're in a place where it'll drop to 0-15 F (I'm just speculating), I think this wold be pretty good for you... Also as long as you don't like bulk.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use
Comfort: 5 / 5

Everything you need
October 12, 2011

I attend university along the great lakes. Weather can be pretty harsh. The triclimate system allows the jacket to function as a fall fleece, winter coat, and fall or spring rain jacket. Water and wind proofing are great. Fleece is heavier than most, good alone or as the insulator to the jacket. Great craftsmanship. TNF is a phenominal brand and this jacket is a testimony to that.

I would rate this jacket a 5

Warm, flexible, comfortable jacket
March 08, 2013

The idea of this jacket is sound, and it works well: combine a base layer with a shell to make one convenient jacket that can be broken down into two separate jackets. The interior fleece is plush and warm, and even though the texture is different in the arms, it is still significantly better than the satin-like lining in most jackets that is ice cold when you first put it on. The fleece jacket zips into interior zippers and stays out of the way while the two pieces are combined, and the hood is easily removable for daily wear. The most important thing: the jacket is warm. I received it just before a cold front moved in, so it saw quite a bit of use for the new couple weeks as temperatures stayed in the 20-35°F range with 25mph+ winds at times. I normally wore short-sleeve t-shirts and can only remember one time when I actually felt the cold through the jacket. If combined with a sweater or long-sleeve shirt, it is probably the warmest combination I have. They don't tout the "windproof" abilities of this as much as other jackets, but I never felt any drafts, even in high winds. There is one odd thing that I have to report: the shell seems to retain smells more than any other jacket I've ever had. In the first few weeks, I went to a couple restaurants, and the smell of them stayed on the jacket along with a smell that my wife says is sort of like BO. It's not personal hygiene (I checked the pits in the fleece) and is only on the shell. A quick wipe down with warm water took care of it the first time, and it faded on its own the second. I don't know if it's just a part of the shell material or if it will stop after it's been worn a bit more, but I figured it was worth mentioning. Pros - Good material/construction quality. - Fleece layer is very comfortable. - Overall length is long enough to keep wind out and not show the bottoms of normal shirts. - Arm length is longer than expected, which is a plus for me. - Side pockets are deep and large; great for gloves or a beanie. - Breast pocket is just large enough to fit my wallet and cell phone. - Combination of tall collar and fleece liner protects neck well even without a scarf. - Has normal NF cinch at the bottom to keep wind out. - Not advertised as windproof, but almost seems to be. Cons - The fit under the arms is a little constricted (6'2", 200lbs, size XL); this is to be expected since you're basically wearing two jackets when they're combined. - No breast pocket on fleece when being used separately. - Shell material holds smells (your mileage may vary). Overall, it's a great jacket that I would highly recommend.

Great Jacket
February 06, 2011

Love the fact that I can wear the fleece by itself or with the waterproof shell. As stated previously, it is a little bit snug around your armpits but not uncomfortable. I'm 5 10' 160 pounds and a medium fits me well. Extremely warm and worth the money.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Cons: Cost

Surprising!
January 23, 2011

I had initially decided to buy this because of all The North Face coats I looked at, it had been rated as the warmest by customers even though it is one of the less expensive triclimates. When I opened the package I was a little concerned because it feels pretty thin and it's also lightweight. I decided to wear it for a few days and see what I thought, and I really haven't been disappointed! Especially given how light it feels, it's a very warm coat. Last night I was out in -5 degree weather and I was perfectly comfortable without having all that many layers on. I had a little apprehension when I got it, but after wearing it for the last several days in really cold weather, I can say with confidence that this is a good buy.

Men's Atlas TriClimate Jacket
February 21, 2012

I got this jacket for my boyfriend as our anniversary present. HE LOVES IT! He lives in NY and it's quite chilly over there and he never wears a jacket because the Spider jacket he has is not true to size and it's bulky. This NorthFace jacket is true to size, doesn't shrink, water resistant, and the best part is that this jacket is 2 in 1! theres a fleece underneath so on lighter days, you can take the jacket apart and just wear the fleece or jacket it self. The only thing I don't like is that my the jacket easily catches lint, you need to buy a lint roller if your getting this jacket! Other than that, I love this jacket myself and will definitely get one for myself now!

My first TNF
December 13, 2011

My first TNF triclimate and like it very much. The solid construction of the jacket make it reliable. The shell is a bit hard but feels good. The fleece is fit the outer jacket. The chains are smooth. I tried walked in a medium rain for half hour and the waterproof is good. The only one drawback is that when the chain reach the top. some raindrops easily wet the upper part of the inner fleece.

Great Ski Jacket
February 12, 2013

I purchased this jacket for a ski trip. I ordered a large and fits well given I'm 5'9", 190 with an athletic build. Snug in the shoulders and chest but I was able to wear a base layer and a thin fleece under the full jacket with fleece zip in liner. The first morning was 4 degrees with wind chill but the jacket kept me warm and dry all weekend. The extra pockets kept all my gear. Great buy.

Pros: Build quality, Great value

Good but snug under the arms
April 23, 2010

Good, warn jacket and really like the look, weight and versatility of it. The 200 weight fleece that zips out is great on it's own. Only problem is I have an athletic build and it's tight under my arms but then slightly loose in the waist which bugs me a little bit. Overall good jacket but if you have an athletic build you may want to look at the Marmot jackets that have the angel wing movement.

December 24, 2011

This is a great all around jacket. I needed something that was versatile to get me through the harsh winters but also keep me dry in the rain. I stay very warm with just a t-shirt and this jacket. I agree underneath the arms is a little snug, but I believe it was designed to be this way. This did not change the size I got. I am 6'0" and 165 and a medium fits perfectly.

The North Face Atlas
December 29, 2010

This is a great jacket. I got it not really expecting much. However, this is a true "all season" jacket. It is super warm since the outer shell blocks wind and it can be used as a rain jacket for spring since the fleece zips out. Also, on super cold days, I can zip in my denali fleece and I'm ready to go. Great jacket

Love It!
January 18, 2011

I bought this jacket for my boyfriend for Christmas. I was a little hesitant since he's not a big shopper and tends to return everything he buys but he LOVED it! He desperately needed a new winter jacket and could have also used a new light-weight jacket so I thought the Triclimate would be the perfect gift... it's 3 jackets in one! He has worn it pretty much every day since I gave it to him, with just the fleece alone and with the fleece and shell on the very cold winter days. He has texted me a couple of times on really windy days saying how great the 2 jackets were together and how he could definitely tell the difference with the wind. The only drawback is that it does run small. He is 5'10" and maybe 200 pounds, very broad shoulders. I bought the XL, based on the other reviews, and I am thankful I did. It's a tad big but allows him to wear layers or a heavy sweater under it. Overall, he loves it-- phew!!

Comfortable, versatile and warm
November 01, 2009

Wonderful jacket....sizing was a bit difficult since the M seems to run a bit larger than the dimensions, and the large seems too roomy (I settled for the medium after two trials). Love the triclimate concept and find both jackets to work well together as well as individually. It is what you would expect from The North Face. As you can see, there are NO CONS about this jacket. I would recommend everyone have a chance to experience it's warmth, comfort and overall excellent performance in all weather conditions.
