Very good jacket, however, just a tiny bit snug under the arms, the large seems to long on the sleeves when i wanted to see what the underarms were like. T thin kit might just be the rashel lining on the inside. Nice jacket, good job NorthFace
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Cons: fit- underarmsDecember 20, 2010
I used to have a less insulated version of this jacket until I recently lost it. I had it for years; it was very durable. This new one has a soft interior and the same great temperature control. In this jacket i'm rarely too warm or too cold. It's an excellent wind breaker and I can't wait to try it out up on the slopes. If you're looking for a high quality jacket to last many years, this is your buy. It's definitely worth it.

Chromium Thermal -- So so
January 13, 2011
I had an Apex Bionic from Nov 2010 that I lost in the airport over the Xmas holidays. So thought I would try the supposedly slightly warmer version of it --- the Chromium Thermal. The Chromium Thermal jacket was what is called a pile-high raschel lining which is a tiny bit thicker than the fleece found in the Apex Bionic but I did not find the Chromium jacket to be any warmer. I was hoping that this would be an exact version of the Apex Bionic but with a warmer lining but I found that the arms were baggier. I actually found the snuggier fitting arms of the Apex Bionic to be more comfy and cozier feeling whereas the air space in the arms of the Chromium made it feel less warm. I also examined the outter shell and they are very close but the Apex Bionic was a bit more softer. This was evidenced by the long arms on both jackets where it felt felt more stiffer and 'crunchier' on the Chromium. So with the long sleeves on both jackets, it felt more comfortable on the Apex Bionic because of it's slightly softer outter shell and definitely less baggy. Again, I'm comparing the latest version of the Chromium to the latest version of the Apex Bionic. Both feature the same Windproof TNF protection. All in all to me at least, I don't find the Chromium to be worth more than the Apex Bionic. Retail pricing has the Chromium selling for $20 more. Even if selling at the same price or a bit cheaper than the Apex Bionic, I would rather choose that over the Chromium. Again that's my personal opinion based on the fit (arms) and thus the coziness and feel of the jacket. That's probably why too that the Apex Bionic is getting tons more thumbs up reviews than with this jacket. So I've just returned this jacket back to Altrec. I am looking to go back to either the Apex Bionic or try the Marmot Gravity. The Marmot Gravity has also gotten great reviews from several websites and in fact I was able to try one on for size just recently and I love the snuggier and slightly less boxy fit. So my initial reaction is that I really like the fit, the cut, the looks and the snuggy warm fleece feel including the feel of the super soft DriClime fabric especially around the neck/chin area. And the fit looks great. That's just an initial brief impression of the jacket but more on that later in another review on the Marmot Gravity page if I decide to choose that jacket....and the other plus is that I wouldn't be walking around with that fashionable "The North Face" logo that's everywhere here in the Chicago area.
Great jacket!

I had an original North Face Apex Jacket and loved it - after 3 years of wear and tear, I was excited to get a new one, but with the warmer and more comfortable, furry lining. That's about the best part of the jacket that could've been improved. I also like the improved design and ease of velcro straps on the cuffs. The more solid construction is easier to pull tight around your wrists for those chilly days.

Good Look / Feel

I bought this jacket for basic, everyday wear. It's not the warmest, most waterproof or most windproof jacket I own, but I don't think it was meant to be. The lining doesn't do all that much for warmth, especially when compared to the very similar, unlined Apex Bionic. It made the jacket a little softer to the touch though. It is cut shorter than I would expect, coming exactly to the top of my pants. This jacket is not made for really tough conditions, but it is a good jacket to throw on when you want something light to hit the town in.
Great jacket for a first timer

Got this jacket for my brother's birthday and he loved it as soon as he saw it. After the first weekend of wearing it, he loved it even more. His ranting and raving is non-stop especially when he wears it in the city where he lives. He can wear a light tee-shirt anytime of the day as long as he has the jacket on top of it.. Great buy in my book.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great valueLove It!

Love the coat! It is super warm, and light weight. Only problem was that it ran a little big, I plan on exchanging it for a smaller size.

The jackets shell is durable and soft, the inside of the jacket is insulated and with a very soft fur like layer. This jacket is very unique from other north face jackets i have. This is a great for cold nights that don't require heavy coats.

only thing i wasnt thrilled about at the start was the cuffs on both sleeves. its elastic and kind of tight. first wearing it, it got on my nerves but after wearing it outside on a windy freezing day changed my tune! jackets is lightweight and stretches with you. very soft and great feel. very warm surprisingly with how thin it is. love everything northface and this is just another great one.

Great Jacket, except...
July 09, 2012
First, I have purchased many NF jackets and I use them all the time for various duties. I was looking for a heavier soft shell jacket and the Chromium fit the bill nicely. I really liked the feel of the Chromium jacket inside and out. The inside is soft and comfortable and keeps me plenty warm for my use. I live in the SF Bay Area so we never get really cold, but we always dip into the 40s and this jacket is perfect for cool nights and windy foggy SF days. The jacket seems very durable. While I have not worn the jacket for a long time, based on my past experiences with NF jackets, I am confident that this jacket will last a long time. The one issue: The cut under the arms is tight for me. I am 5' 10" and 170 lbs. and usually Medium fits me perfectly. I ordered a Medium and the jacket fits me in all places, but it is more snug under the arms than my other NF jackets. This really is not a knock against the jacket because a person with a more athletic body may find this cut perfect for them. In my opinion, this jacket has a cut that is somewhere in between the regular cut and the Summit Series cut.

good but tight (literally)

Typically a medium north face jack' fits me perfectly but this guy is cut a little slimmer. Something to keep in mind but other than that this jacket is highly durable and wind protecting.

This is a very strong and durable jacket, yet it is also very stylish. It is very warm and blocks the wind very well when I'm out walking on a cold day. This jacket also keeps me dry on rainy days and nights. I receive compliments on this jacket almost everytime I wear it.

Excellent Fit and price

Not only is this north face coat comfortable it fits extremely well. I was looking for a light jacket to protect me from the light right, wind and cold of the Pacific Northwest. This jacket works well in this capacity. Combine it with the great price and quick delivery of altrec and it is a no brainer.

Bought this jacket for my husband and he absolutely loves it. The inside is super soft and makes the jacket very warm. He is 6'1'' 210lbs. and the XL fits him well but he could probably have gone up a size. Overall a very nice jacket.

I bought this jacket for a guy I was dating. We ended the relationship soon after receiving the jacket so I am not able to give an accurate review. I thought the site was great to navigate through, the shipment was on time and from what I did see of the jacket, it looked great, loved the material and was very practical.

I purchased this coat as a present for someone- the inside is a fuzzy warm material that is both very comfortable and warm. This is warmer than the normal apex or denali fleeces... its perfect for what I wanted so I am VERY happy with it!! It may seem a bit expensive, bit let me tell you its worth every penny, I have the same but in females, and have had it now for 3 years, and it looks brand new, and I also have a regular apex one that has lasted a long time as well... although its expensive it is a good investment!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueGreat Purchase for the money

I was looking for a soft shell jacket that provided more insulation than The North Face apex bionic. The Chromium Thermal jacket is the perfect purchase for cool new england weather. It is a very warm lightweight jacket. It has a soft and comfotable feel that provides better insulation. I'm 6'0'' and 235lbs and typically buy an extra large. I would buy a size larger if you plan on wearing layers underneath the jacket. The jacket will feel snug under the arms if you don't.
