Great outdoor shoe
April 26, 2012

My family has plans to travel to Seattle/Mt Rainier in June so IÂ’ve been looking for a sturdy (GTX) multi-purpose shoe. I've had my eye on the Hedgehog for quite awhile. While at a local outdoor retailer I tried on a pair and fell in love and almost purchased them on the spot. Fortunately my wife convinced me to check online (they werenÂ’t cheap). I found the Hedgehog III GTX XCR on sale at Altrec.com and placed the order immediately. Three days later the package arrived as promised. A rare mix of comfort and durability, this shoe quickly became my favorite.

April 20, 2012

They are very solid and comfortable. Certainly, they look very good. People quickly notice that shoes are made by North Face and have good regards to the brand. Buying them at Altrec is pleasant experience. Delivery was fast.

Pros: nice fit, north face quality, sporty style
Cons: shoe laces get loose easily

Great fit, true to size. Nice wearing shoe! It had no break in time, it's like I have had it for years. I want a comfortable ,waterproof shoe, and this was a great choice.

Great shoe

I wore these shoes on three 5 mile hikes so far and they are very comfortable. They were a little stiff at first but they broke in fast. Great traction and my feet stayed cool.

Pros: traction, keep feet cool, waterproof, light weight

Great shoe!
March 05, 2012

I have not had a chance to test this hiking a 14er yet, but so far I like the shoe. My only concern is there is not enough padding on the tongue of the shoe. So the metal eye holes presses pretty hard on my feet. Other than that, the shoes are great!

Good everyday shoe or off road hiker
February 02, 2012

Before buying these through this site, I tried on several pairs of shoes in local store, including a pair of these. These were by far the most comfortable and responsive I tried, but I wasn't wanting to spend the full cost, and I didn't need them instantly, so when I saw them on sale on here, I decided to buy them. Since then, I have only worn them a few days, but there are some things I can tell about them: Overall styling is good - they look like a normal pair of sneakers, but seem as well suited for most hiking and outdoors activities as they are for walking through a mall. I ordered the New Taupe Green/ Moon Mist Grey, which is the color I had tried on, and they are a nice neutral gray color. In my searching before buying these, I also saw the Coffee Brown/ Algae Yellow, which I also liked - in fact, I may have preferred it, but I thought the taupe color was more neutral, and would hide dirt better and look fine with a wider array of colors of pants - not that that's a big deal to me, but it was a small consideration on which shoe I would buy. Fitment is like a normal pair of shoes. I wear 10.5 in Addidas, Nike, Reebok, etc., and these fit just as well. I have worn them with mid weight hiking socks and regular gold toes, and they are comfortable either way. The support of the insole is very good. Initial inspection of the insole that they call Northodic, shows it is well supported around the heel, with a little extra padding under the ball of the foot. This helps cradle your foot in the shoe very comfortably. They do have a bit of arch support, so if you are flat footed, you may want to look elsewhere or change the insole (though that is a part of what I like about them). The lacing is a little tight to adjust, but I think that will loosen up a little as they get more wear. The Vibram sole is a nice aggressive pattern that gives good grip, even on wet, slippery tile, and after laying pavers on wet soil, I didn't have any issues with tracking any of it indoors. The sole also has a little bit of a rocking motion built in, which helps with natural striding. I haven't tested their waterproofing, but I expect they should do a decent job. The tongue is gussetted to just under the top lacing eye. The best boots I've ever inspected that had a Gore-Tex lining had it all the way around the inside of the shoe, seamlessly covering the entire lining - even under the insole. These don't - it is more the typical layout, extending about 1/4 to 1/2 inch under the insole. I don't think that will compromise the waterproofness, though. I haven't had a chance to wear them in hot temperatures, but in 88* weather, the lining didn't cause any breathability issues. Initial build quality seems very good. They are the first North Face products I have owned, and they seem to live up to the reputation. Hope that's helpful.

High Quality & Performance
November 24, 2011

I have owned several pairs of North Face hiking shoes, and they have never disappointed. The Hedgehog III is no exception. Solid construction, great grip, 100% waterproof and durable. For outdoor shoes I always insist on them being 100% waterproof, with Goretex the preferred lining, as these promote breathability.

NorthFace GoreTex shoes - a good buy
June 25, 2011

I purchased these on the basis of a recommendation from a good friend and co-worker. He praised them for being comfortable, light, cool in a hot climate and how they kept his feel dry despite having to walk in 1-2 inches of water in deployed locations. I'm a 5'7" male, 190 lbs and do a moderate amount of walking in these shoes since I received them. My shoe size is 9.5 and the pair fit me well. Having worn them for a couple of weeks, so far all of my friend's claims are true. ( I haven't had to walk in water yet.) I find them to be well constructed and comfortable.

Durability and Comfort
June 03, 2011

These shoes are great. I've used them in a wet weather and always maintain their solid grip. On dry days they stay cool. Solid...only thing is slight stiffness when new which should be expected from any shoe right out of the box. Thanks NorthFace
