Good Value / Fit
June 15, 2011

This is the first hiking type shoe I’ve purchased, opting previously for boots. As a big guy, I’ve always preferred hiking shoes to engineer boots, sneakers, etc., for comfort in my everyday walking around. These shoes fit well in size 12 and were comfortable right out of the box. They are surprisingly light, clean up easily after robust use and a decent value as priced. Oddly, I also purchased Salomon boots in the same size and they were tight, (and squeaked). I went to EMS to purchase another pair and wound up buying a North Face product, but had to go a size larger. But I’m happy with the shoes.

Great hiking shoes
February 11, 2012

These are quality North face hiking shoes. They fit true to size. They are very comfortable and durable. I have owned and used the North Face products for many years and I am very satisfied with the overall quality.

Best Hiking/Multi-purpose shoe I ever bought.
March 27, 2012

This is by far the best shoe I have ever bought. It has already accompanied me in several trails and long camping trip. Not once has it made me feel uncomfortable, blister, or excessively sweat inside. The traction is very great so a little bit of loose sediment or mud won't impede your way. You'll also be able to tell that this is one tough pair of shoes. I've worn it many times but it still feels brand new. The waterproof lining is a great addition, but it won't stop water coming up and over. It won't keep your feet dry if you're crossing a stream that is taller than the shoe (duh), but that's what gaiters are for. If you love the outdoors and have the cash, GO FOR IT. p.s. just don't try to dance in them. you'll probably end up eating it because the traction is so good.

Pros: good selection of colors, lightweight, Cons: can't dance in them.

Great Shoes
February 01, 2012

I like them very much. The build quality is very well (like most of NF products). Vibram sole is durable and have a good hookup with ground. My only concern is size. I wear between 8-8.5US but I had to stick to 9US because they are running half size small. I would suggest to order 0.5-1 size up.

Pros: greate quality, Cons: runs half size small

My last purchase of a pair of TNF hiking boots lasted three years and I wouldn't have given it up if not for the wear on the sole and I was losing grip and traction - I used it for the most difficult hikes through all sorts of terrain and it never let me down. Then I ventured into using other brands of hiking boots which didn't last me even half as long - one pair actually gave way to a puncture from a sharp rock on its first hike :(. I've decided to go back to TNF to save me the anxiety of wearing an unreliable shoe when I'm out there in the elements. The Hedgehog III is surprising in its weight and heel support. The fit is superb with enough support and room all around. I can't wait to try them out on the trails and see how it performs but I'm sure I won't be disappointed. I love it too that I got it on sale! Thank you Altrec!

i went for it
September 01, 2012

switching from Keen's these shoes were a pleasant surprise. light with good ventilation, yet strong and comfortable and true to size. they felt good in just a few minutes of wearing them. I forgot i had new shoes on in 10 minutes. they look well built, i'll get back to you on that after a few months. that's the main reason for dropping the keen brand, which fit well, but fall apart fast. After searching for quite a while i hope these NF hedgehogs are the answer.

Best for smooth trails
August 25, 2011

Got these Hedgehogs about 3 weeks ago. I went for about a 9 mile day hike in the North Cascades in them. They were comfortable, fit well, breathe well, and provided good traction on slippery rocks / logs in creek crossings. I didn't get the gore-tex versions because I don't day hike in downpouring rain and I don't care what anyone say, I think gore-tex at least somewhat decreases the breathability of shoes. The one thing I was a tad disappointed with is the sole in the forefoot is a little too thin / soft. Even though they're Vibram soles, they just seemed a bit too soft up there. I could feel all the small rocks and edges of big rocks I hiked over. It wasn't bad but still a bit softer than I would prefer. I think TNF did that to make these very soft / comfortable on the forefoot on smooth terrain (since it seems most folks wearing TNF shoes / clothes seldom see a trail these days anyways). The heel box was perfect. I couldn't feel any rocks under my heels and the box held my foot in that area excellently. Plus, the shoes have a nice light feel to them. Overall, I'm satisfied.

Pros: light weight, solid heel construction, good traction, highly breathable, Cons: sole in forefoot a little soft
