Description

Sub-freezing temperatures, bone-chilling winds and blizzards with 2 feet of visibility. Just another day in the life of The North Face Men's McMurdo Parka. This bad boy can handle brutal weather like a champ thanks to a durable, waterproof breathable 2-layer HyVent® shell wrapped around heat retaining 550-fill goose down insulation. Seal out the frigid wind when you close up the Velcro cuffs and cinch up the drawcords at the waist and hem. This winter parka has a full zip front with a storm flap and is long enough to reach your upper thigh, but not so long that it impedes walking or shoveling snow. Three interior pockets offer secure storage for gloves, iPod and a place to keep your water bottle or a thermos. Seven exterior pockets can keep everything else and add to the classic, outdoorsy style. A removable hood is trimmed with detachable faux fur to complete the Antarctica-worthy package. You can have the warmth of a puffy down jacket and the weather protection of a winter coat with The North Face McMurdo Parka for men.

Men's McMurdo Parka 4.5 5 66 66
Happy with order Arrived quickly. Quality product. Ease in ordering. Website fit my needs. I hope it works out for me as I need to travel frequently to cold places for business. When you live in Florida you get used to warm weather. January 31, 2012
nice and really warm jacket, I am medium size but M is too large for me, had tpo change it with a S, otherwise a decent piece of clothing, not really fancy January 30, 2012
good product I bought M size. I'm 180cm, and 84kg. It's fits well. But I'm Asian, so arm length a little bit longer for me. Mcmurdo parka is very warm. Even I wear T-shirts inside, I can't feel cold at all. It's very warm parka. only one thing I wouldn't satisfy that it's quiet haevy.... Maybe women doesn't like this parka I think. But, for man in cold weather, I strongly recommend this parka. January 28, 2012
North Face Men's McMurdo Parka I needed to replace a very good down jacket that had begun to moult. After much looking I found the North Face McMurdo Parka with exactly the features I wanted. Well made, water repellant, with snaps over zipper to close (allowing a quick on-and-off to get the paper on cold mornings!), oversized pockets, and removable hood (with faux fur, no less, that is separately removable!), this was the jacket I wanted. I bought it in XXL but found that I needed XL. altrec was great; they provided an RMA without question and sent the smaller jacket which was perfect. The cost of returning the first jacket was well-worth it, and the price of the jacket so reasonable that I could easily justify the expense to myself. January 28, 2012
With a name like McMurdo... You kind of expect it to be warm. This parka from North Face does not disappoint in that regard. Many down jackets have a weather resistant exterior but will still get wet over time - and wearing a sodden down jacket is not fun at all. I've only had this jacket a short time but already like it a lot - I was out overnight and all weekend with the Scouts and it was below zero for most of that time. The McMurdo Parka kept me toasty warm. In fact, I had to unzip it for a good bit of the day because I was overheating. The only negative about this jacket, and what prevented it from getting five stars, is that the hood is really really big. It would be nice if there was a buckle on the back of it so you could cinch it down. As it is, it kind of covers your entire head and it is hard to position the hood on your head so that you can see. It's almost as if you put a 30 gallon trash bag over your head. Being able to cinch down the back of the hood, or putting a flexible wire or something in the fur ruff would be very good. It's not a fashionable jacket - but I guarantee I was one of the warmest in my group. January 23, 2012
Excellent choice Excellent waterproofing for wet snow. Highly windproof and warm for Chicago winds along the lakefront. Love all those inner pockets to secure personal items. I am 185lbs and 5' 10". Normally a North Face large is fine. This is a little bigger than normal for a North Face jacket. January 21, 2012
cozy but too big This is a great jacket that looks better than in the pics. I ordered the jacket through Altrec because I love their service. The jacket looks good but fits are not in size. I am 6.1 feet tall, 220 lbs with a 36 inch waist and the Large size would be the perfect size for me. January 11, 2012
A big, warm parka. I ordered the parka for my 6'4" 18 year old son and he absolutely loves it. The jacket runs big so it'll make you look a bit bulky, but what's not to expect from a quality winter parka? He wears size M t shirts and has some muscle bulk too, but the Medium sized parka fit him the best. He loves the fur-lined hood and the warmth of the 550 fill down, which will hopefully keep him warm during the upcoming New York winter. North Face products may be expensive, but you always get what you pay for! November 28, 2011
this jacket will keep so you so warm in the blister cold without many layers. However it is bulky and you will look like you gained 20 pounds in it. If you are looking to stay warm get it, but if you plan to wear it around casually around a college campus, i would get something else. November 26, 2011
Very Nice Parka I was in the Military with Duty Stations in Alaska, upstate New York and Northern Germany to name a few of the very cold locations I was stationed at and I can say that compared to the Military Issue Parka, the McMurdo is a very nice Parka!!! The only issue I have with it is that the hood is too big and doesn't have an adjustment strap to be able to raise it in order to get it out of your face. Otherwise, it hangs down to far obstructing your view. Other than that, it's warm, provides ample pocket storage and is made of a very durable, waterproof and resistant material. Adequate enough to keep you warm on those frigid, icy and snowy days. October 14, 2011
Very warm! I'm 5-10. 175 lbs and ordered a large. Good thing I did. The outside material is very rugged. Very warm in the cold. Only drawback is the weight of the coat. It is a heavy jacket =( August 2, 2011
Thick and heavy, but perfect for city dwellers Got this jacket to use for the cold snowy winters, and it's perfect at this price point. Since the jacket runs large, it fits very well over suits sweaters. I bought a "small" and and it's still gigantic. I like the quality of the stitching and the pockets available to you, but I would like to see North Face reduce the size of the hood. The hood isn't too useful right now since it swallows my head, and since it's so big, plenty of cold wind still gets into it. Older versions of this jacket had a horizontal zipper by the breast logo. Not sure why they took it out, but I can always find a reason to have another pocket. Hopefully they'll bring it back in the future. If you are a city dweller trying to stay warm as you go to work, this is the jacket for you. July 23, 2011
Great Product ! As many people know, this particular product (especially black color) was sold out in almost every shop during last 2010 winter. This is probably the product providing both warmest warmth and lightest (yet have many different storage spaces) weight. I highly recommend this product to anyone for emerging severe winter as this provides water-proof protection, too. I liked this black color and that's why I bought this despite its non-saled price at that time. March 12, 2011
Awesome looking parka! I was looking for something what could withstand Chicago's winter. The North Face Mc'Murdo was my best choice after comparing to other brands and parkas. Shipping was quick. Parka looked like a champ. I've tried it and........I tought I'm going to "drown" in it :). The size was not even close to what I wear. This parka runs way to large. I'm 6'1", weigh 205, athletic build and my regular TNF size is XL. I had to return item and buy one size smaller which fits just great. February 28, 2011
Perfect Parka My husband and I have started to hit the slopes again after alomst 10 years. We bought other North Face jackets that allowed us to zip in our Denali's. He noticed there were a few cold spots so we began the hunt for a new jacket for him. We first bought the McMurdo in the Large according to the size chart but once it was delivered we coud fit both him and me in the jacket! I soon returned it and exchanged it for the Medium. Now he loves it, even thinks it might be too warm! Altrec was great on price, shipping and returning! February 27, 2011
Go big or go home Moving from the warmth of the SW US to the Northeast in the middle of winter put me in the position of buying the warmest, most versatile coat/jacket I could find. This is a big coat, covers your hips, and is super warm. It's wind and waterproof, and the hood is big and warm. The only knock is its big, and super warm which wouldn't work in milder temperatures. It is great for snow days, walking the city streets in sub 20 degree F temps, windy, snowy, and rainy climates. I think this coat is perfect for big guys, who are new to really cold/snowy winters. February 9, 2011
Its Great I love it. It keeps me warm in everything. The only thing is even as a small its a little big for me. It is very durable and well built as is everything that The North Face makes. January 30, 2011
warm, durable and reliable This is very warm and durable. I am living in NY and I am so happy that I have this in cold winter. When I leave early in the morning or come home very late, this is a must item I have to have. It looks a little big and gives no tight feeling. But in many cold situations, I prefer to be warm more than a good fit and look. Even though the cold days are 10-20 days a year, I will definitely have this one. January 25, 2011
GREAT COAT THIS COAT REALLY KEEPS YOU WARM. SIZING IS VERY FULL CUT. I WAS TOLD BY FRIENDS NORTH FACE TENDS TO RUN SMALL TO SIZE. THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR THIS COAT. PLENTY OF ROOM. THE HOOD IS A BIT TOO LARGE, COULD STAND TO BE SIZED DOWN, BUT OTHER THAN THAT I LOVE THE COAT. PLENTY OF POCKETS FOR GLOVES AND MISC ITEMS. January 10, 2011
McMurdo Parka Bought this for my son who is attending college is Vermont. He wanted something stylish and I wanted a jacket that would keep him toasty warm as he battled the harsh Vermont winters. He loves it! Worth every penny!! He will have this jacket for a very long time! January 10, 2011
Great purchase! I bought it for my husband, and he felt comfortable and so so warm! He can even walk a long time even under the chilly weather. Worth of the price! January 3, 2011
Very warm jacket. Wore it through some tough winters and didn't need to layer underneath the jacket. Very good. December 15, 2010
Must have it! I bought McMurdo Down Parka for my husband in January this year. He loved it as soon as he tried it on!! This parka keeps him very warm so my husband wears light outfit with this parka even in windly and cold weather! He enjoys wearing it today too!! December 5, 2010
warm and comfy THE QUALITY IS EXCELLET. THE CRFTMANSHIP IS OF GREAT QUALITY AND THE MATERIALS UED ARE SUPERIRIOR. THE COAT IS HOT, EVEN IN THE WIND,,LOVE IT AND OPE TO HAVE IT FOR YEARS November 21, 2010
Not Warm Honestly, I had very high expectations for this jacket. I read reviews on many web sites, did a lot of research, and set out to pick up what I thought would be a waterproof and very very warm parka. I was very disappointed. The first time I had it out, it performed fantastically - at about 38F, there were no issues. It also kept me very dry in some terrible snow/freezing rain. However, as soon as it got around 30 (or below), my arms got cold. While my core stayed warm, this jacket let me down bigtime - my Eddie Bauer down jacket could have handled down to 20 easily, and this one cost much more. If you want the style of the fur hood and won't be out for long, this will work well for you. If not, don't waste your money. While you will be dry, you won't be warm. May 29, 2010
Siberian warmth I bought this jacket when I went to live in Siberia. When the temperature hit -50, I was still warm. March 30, 2010
A great parka for the snow and cold! The winter of 2010 in DC was too much for me until I started wearing the McMurdo parka. It kept me dry and warm in this historic storm. February 18, 2010
Great Jacket Just moved back to Canada to very cold temperatures (- 20 F + wind) and the coat held up great. the fur doesn't attach to the hood too well that's the main drawback. February 1, 2010
Warm but Rough arm holds are cut high and a little tight for the arm pits with a sweater underneath with a medium, and I am 5ft. The coat is warm! January 27, 2010
great jacket, runs big Great jacket.I bought it for my brother who is 5'11, medium build and a size small fit him like a medium. he said it felt like a heater when he had it on and didn't have to wear much underneath, just a t-shirt was fine. January 27, 2010
Just what I was looking for.. The McMurdo was selected by my cousin who we got it for as a Christmas gift. He went for the XL and it was a little too big, so we are exchanging it. Otherwise, the price just beat other sites, but the free shipping made it well worthwhile January 4, 2010
Great coat I bought this parka for my son who is 6'5". He loves it and it fits like a dream. December 21, 2009
Didn't like Not enough down, didn't like faux fur December 20, 2009
I bought this coat for my son. He loves his coat I bought this coat for my son. He love his coat and he said its extremely warm! December 12, 2009
A Great Purchase and Some Updated Info A lot has already been said, but let me add just a bit. 1. The construction and attention to detail is really very good--including the little things like the design and placement of the pockets, little loops to guide your headphone wire up the zipper hem on the inside of the jacket (slick!), and how/where the tension cords are pulled to tighten the bottom and torso of the jacket, etc. etc. 2. The hood can be removed and the fur can be attached directly to the collar. The result is a big furry collar that can be "flipped up" to cover ones ears and give them what is effectively a built-in scarf. (Ya Baby!) The fur attaches to the collar using both snaps AND Velcro. (It is odd that there is no Velcro on the hood, so that the fur only snaps on to it. The jacket is otherwise so well designed that I am tempted to think that there must be some reason for this that I am just not thinking of. In any event, it doesn't seem to me to be that huge of an issue.) 3. The hood does not seem huge to me, as so many have said. Granted, my hat size is 7 5/8". The hood on the L fits my noggin perfectly. 4. Overall Sizing: I was just measured for a suit. I have a 35" waist, 17" neck and 35" arm. I am just over 6', have broad shoulders, and weigh 210ish. Looking at the sizing chart, I fell in between the L and XL, and was leaning toward the XL. That would have been a BIG mistake. The L fits me PERFECTLY. 5. The Neck: People have complained that the neck is too large. I have a 17" neck and the sizing chart says the L fits up to 16.5". I can tell you that the L neck is perfect for me. It closes snugly allowing no cold air through. So, maybe it's just that people's necks are on the small size of the range rather than on the large as is mine? 6. The Shoulders: Someone mentioned that the down fill was not properly secured/quilted in the shoulders and that it consequently moved leaving one with cold spots. What? Looking inside the jacket one sees several ribs stuffed with down that run along the top of the shoulder. Seems secure and warm to me! THE UPSHOT: I could say a lot more, but I'll leave it at this. One could spend substantially more on a Canada Goose Parka or something similar, and one could certainly spend less. At the end of the day, I think this is $300 VERY well spent. This jacket easily keeps me warm over a T-shirt, in the now-growing NYC cold winter winds. I have no doubt that barring some sort of oil-spill, or other waste-related accident, I will be wearing this jacket for a long, long time. December 11, 2009
Warm Coat! This is my second McMurdo down coat because it is the best. No other coat is worth the money of the North Face. I hope they make it other colors in the near future so I can purchase another. My first one last about 5 years, so that is good for the work that I do and the abuse that it takes on a yearly basis. November 16, 2009
My husband loves it! I bought it for my husband who is 6'6" and has a hard time finding cloths that fit. It's great it's long enough and soooo warm. March 21, 2009
its warm check your size, they run big, very warm and comfortable, except for the damn velcro. its a chore to get in to pockets with velco closing, disappointed to find stiching was incomplete on flap velcro, it came off 2nd wearing. coat is bulky to wear when driving, also too hot. January 17, 2009
Except the Hood The coat is great except for the hood. It is poorly designed. The hood is much larger than it needs to be; It comes down in front of my eyes, making it very difficult to see. Also, the drawstring and cord-locks on the hood are not adequate enough; They are too thin / too small to be effective. It would help a lot if they were heavy duty. December 28, 2008
Great Coat! I have one in "New Taupe". It's so awesome that it makes me look forward to below zero weather here in Chi-Town. The downside....a little bulky and puffy looking. November 22, 2008
This is MASSIVE! This jacket is huge. We got XL because my husband finds North Face Large a bit 'firm' - and the XL McMurdo is so enormous I cant imagine how useful it will be as it seems too much for a quick trip to the supermarket in sub-zero. The hood is too big and flops down over his face - It really needs a catch (Like My TNF jacket has) to pull the hood back off his face. Having said all that, the jacket is just what you'd want if you had to stand still (or move around a tiny bit) in the freezing cold - I dont know - Ice fishing? We ended up going out and buying the Mountain Hardware 650 down jacket (light, maneuverable) to get the exact thing we were looking for (i.e. A very warm versitile coat). He loves the look - but the bulk is a bit restricting. So we're not sending it back. You never know, maybe we'll try the ice fishing this winter! October 1, 2008
Nice coat! This is one heavy duty coat! I'm sure it will keep me warm in the bitter cold of January and February in Boston. I wear an XL and was concerned that I should have ordered an XXL in this coat, but the XL fits perfect. One thing that is a bit odd - The hood is so large that I could wear a football helmet and it would still fit. All in all - a very nice coat. September 25, 2008
good piece of gear great price In Barrow Alaska, well below freezing working with helicopters. the Parka works very well... great insulation and the zip off Faux fur works well as a collar or as a hood / snorkel liner. Pockets are adequate and hold my winter gloves and hat. Shipping was prompt and the price was the lowest available. September 6, 2008
Best Parka around!! I had been looking to buy the McMurdo Parka for awhile now. Always looking around for a deal or sale. I finally decided to buy the jacket from Altrec when I saw it on sale. Living in the northeast, it's always a good idea to have that one super warm jacket that will protect you for the brutal cold. I had owned another parka which just wasn't doing the job. After I finally got the McMurdo, I just waited for that bitter cold day to arrive. This jacket is fantastic. I wore a t-shirt underneath with this jacket on, you still stay nice and toasty. If you wear the hood then you can't even tell it's blistering cold outside. The jacket feels nice too, very comfortable, well made. I like all the internal pockets since I need places to carry my phone, mp3 player, etc. I highly recommend this jacket to everyone looking to stay warm in the winter. April 9, 2008
serena fang I love this jacket very warn also many pocket it very convenient. April 8, 2008
Great North Face Jacket It's the warmest jacket that I have ever worn. Great detail, a lot of functional pocket, highly durable. Highly recommended for anyone, everywhere. March 17, 2008
Great coat for those very cold days With three children who play ice hockey i spend a lot of time in cold places. I was looking for a warm, comfortable jacket with a lot of accessible pockets and i found it in the North Face McMurdo Parka. Similar coats from other brands did not have the detachable hood which was a plus for me with the McMurdo. wearing this coat is like wrapping yourself in a down sleeping bag. cozy! January 12, 2008
down parka with hood good down parka, good hood with phaux fur. too, too much velcro and label claims only a certain per cent to be down. once you remove all the velcro, it is a good parka in the cold weather. it has a waterproof membrane, but it is too warm to wear if it is raining and not below freezing. I do not understand TNF, they put snaps on the wind flap and velcro everywhere else. they should have snapped some of the internal pockets, not velcro. Internal cuff in sleeve works well, why velcro on the outside? October 3, 2007
Great Jacket Would highly recommend. It is the warmest jacket I have ever warn. I've warn it in -20 degree weather, and i still feel like im next to a fire. Many pocket are also convenient. September 11, 2007
mc murdo jacker I love the color and texture of the jacket. The color is unsual but lovely. I am certain that the jacket will keep me warm in the winter. August 9, 2007
Great Coat Is is heavily insulated and perfect for those frigid New York winters. I was planning on buying another for my little brother, depending on his report card, lol. I would definitely recommend it. Please keep in mind that is a little bit heavy but very warm. May 18, 2007
Good jacket but heavy Good jacket but it is heavy. Not recommended if you are performing strenuous activity. It is very warm and so far has handled every cold winter activity so far. Because of its size it will not give you much mobility. May 5, 2007
nice parka, great hood Nice down parka, with a great hood. sleeves too short for me, usually wear a large Tall. too much velcro: three internal pockets and three external pockets have the wool shredding stuff and the they put five patches of it in the hood/collar along with five snaps. they used only snaps on the wind flap, thank goodness. once you take the time to remove the velcro, it is a nice parka. upon reading the fine print on the tiny labels sewn inside, it says something to the effect that there is the minimum amount of down required by law. does that mean it is 30% feathers and 70% down? what ever, it works well and the HyVent stuff layered under the outer shell seems to block wind really well. they say it is waterproof too, but I have not the desire to wear it when it is raining, since that would be above freezing temperatures. It will stay in the closet until the windchills are around zero degrees! cannot imagine paying full price for it, does not seem worth it. April 3, 2007
Awesome The coat is wonderful it has all the storage compartments you can possibly need... however the coat is bulky, and very heavy on the up side it is as warm as wearing a down comforter and does me very solid on the cold mornings in the New York City Streets. I am happy with the coat and wish i would have purchased it for past winters. February 26, 2007
Perfect! The McMurdo jacket was even better than I thought it would be. It is extremely warm, yet not as bulky as it looked online. Sizes do run big. I normally wear an XL and the large fits me just right. If you're not a furry hood type of person, the fur detaches and you can attach it to the collar. It makes for a very nice look and allows you to leave the scarf at home. The bad: None, really, except that the winter this year where I live has been the warmest on record so I haven't got much use out of the coat. February 24, 2007
Awfully warm but don't try driving!! I live in the white mountains of New Hampshire and needed something that could deal with our sometimes brutally cold winters. This jacket certainly handles the cold but its so big and puffy that when I was wearing the coat I could barely fit in my car much less drive it (and I am a retty small guy!!!). If all you are doing is walking around in the cold, I guess this jacket is ok. February 9, 2007
Excellent coat. Very warm and comfortable; not heavy. My son has not put it down since he got it. February 9, 2007
House On Your Back (in a good way) A serious outdoor parka probably best suited for longer outdoor exposure, but kinda bulky for going in and out of the car a lot. It's cut long so it covers up a lot. It has internal waistband and bottom edge elastic cords to cinch it in as desired. It actually has 10 pockets total (whoa) on the outside (some pockets are inside others), and 5 on the inside of the coat (2 of those for water bottles). The outside fabric is a little stiff, and it's heavier than the Michelin Man jackets. The fit proportions are a little odd so it's helpful to try one on for size in a store first. That being said, I LOVE it. Quality and workmanship seem top-notch and I like the feeling of being in an impregnable fortress when I venture outside into the cold and snowy stuff, even around town. It's nice not to always be bracing against the cold and just relax and enjoy it out there... January 27, 2007
Excellent I'm very happy with the service I received from Altrec, the sales rep was very helpful. The jacket arrived timely and well-packed. I am completely satisfied with my order. January 27, 2007
Heavy This coat is the best investment to keep the chill off.Sizings are quite large January 17, 2007
Excellent ~ Excellent choice for protection from severe elements. Too heavy and bulky for strenuous activity. January 9, 2007
Heavy jacket Prospective buyers should keep in mind that this jacket is heavy, bulky, and extremely warm. I live in California, so basically the McMurdo has a permanent spot in my closet. I do not regret the purchase because it is a very high quality jacket and looks very nice in person. November 17, 2006
men/s mcmurdo down parker its a great parker man it keeps you warm that don/t need a sweater get one and you see January 28, 2006
The best of the best! Wow is this warm! Very durable fabric! No need for a pack, this has all the pockets that I need! I like the water bottle pockets. Hiking is wonderful w/out frozen water! Excellent coverage. Nice big hood, Very durable! Highly recommend! December 29, 2005
Very Nice My boyfriend has this jacket and he loves it, very warm and nice fit. December 25, 2005
