Description

Sub-freezing temperatures, bone-chilling winds and blizzards with 2 feet of visibility. Just another day in the life of The North Face Men's McMurdo Parka. This bad boy can handle brutal weather like a champ thanks to a durable, waterproof breathable 2-layer HyVent® shell wrapped around heat retaining 550-fill goose down insulation. Seal out the frigid wind when you close up the Velcro cuffs and cinch up the drawcords at the waist and hem. This winter parka has a full zip front with a storm flap and is long enough to reach your upper thigh, but not so long that it impedes walking or shoveling snow. Three interior pockets offer secure storage for gloves, iPod and a place to keep your water bottle or a thermos. Seven exterior pockets can keep everything else and add to the classic, outdoorsy style. A removable hood is trimmed with detachable faux fur to complete the Antarctica-worthy package. You can have the warmth of a puffy down jacket and the weather protection of a winter coat with The North Face McMurdo Parka for men.

Awesome purchase
February 24, 2012

Read all of the reviews before I purchased this jacket for my boyfriend. Evey review stated that the jacket was too large, with most having to send back for a smaller size. I still went ahead and ordered the large for aa 5'8 guy who works out on a regular basis, with well developed chest and arms. To my surprise, the jacket fit him perfectly! He absolutely loved it, and can't wait for colder weather to hit Minnnesota. Thanks Northface, for an awesome jacket!

REAL Parka
February 23, 2012

This is a REAL parka. I've looked at both the Gotham and Yellowband as well. Those are both shorter in length and also lighter in weight. I wanted something that was built for cold and wind and decided I needed a parka. If you're looking for a true parka this is it. I've also tried on other brands and their parkas. The McMurdo I feel is the best value for it's quality. It's heavy and bulky but it's built well. Order a size smaller than your usual as it's a fits a size large. Shipping was fast. Would buy again from Altrec.

McMurdo Parka
February 23, 2012

My old Canadian army parka is 20 years old and i felt it was time to replace it. I chose this jacket and am quite pleased with it. It breaks the wind well and is very warm. It is most comfortable when walking rather than sitting and i feels a bit uncomfortable when getting into a car and putting a seat belt on. The zipper was a bit sticky at first but is fine now two weeks later.

good product
January 28, 2012

I bought M size. I'm 180cm, and 84kg. It's fits well. But I'm Asian, so arm length a little bit longer for me. Mcmurdo parka is very warm. Even I wear T-shirts inside, I can't feel cold at all. It's very warm parka. only one thing I wouldn't satisfy that it's quiet haevy.... Maybe women doesn't like this parka I think. But, for man in cold weather, I strongly recommend this parka.

North Face Men's McMurdo Parka
January 28, 2012

I needed to replace a very good down jacket that had begun to moult. After much looking I found the North Face McMurdo Parka with exactly the features I wanted. Well made, water repellant, with snaps over zipper to close (allowing a quick on-and-off to get the paper on cold mornings!), oversized pockets, and removable hood (with faux fur, no less, that is separately removable!), this was the jacket I wanted. I bought it in XXL but found that I needed XL. altrec was great; they provided an RMA without question and sent the smaller jacket which was perfect. The cost of returning the first jacket was well-worth it, and the price of the jacket so reasonable that I could easily justify the expense to myself.

With a name like McMurdo...
January 23, 2012

You kind of expect it to be warm. This parka from North Face does not disappoint in that regard. Many down jackets have a weather resistant exterior but will still get wet over time - and wearing a sodden down jacket is not fun at all. I've only had this jacket a short time but already like it a lot - I was out overnight and all weekend with the Scouts and it was below zero for most of that time. The McMurdo Parka kept me toasty warm. In fact, I had to unzip it for a good bit of the day because I was overheating. The only negative about this jacket, and what prevented it from getting five stars, is that the hood is really really big. It would be nice if there was a buckle on the back of it so you could cinch it down. As it is, it kind of covers your entire head and it is hard to position the hood on your head so that you can see. It's almost as if you put a 30 gallon trash bag over your head. Being able to cinch down the back of the hood, or putting a flexible wire or something in the fur ruff would be very good. It's not a fashionable jacket - but I guarantee I was one of the warmest in my group.

Cons: hood design

Excellent choice
January 21, 2012

Excellent waterproofing for wet snow. Highly windproof and warm for Chicago winds along the lakefront. Love all those inner pockets to secure personal items. I am 185lbs and 5' 10". Normally a North Face large is fine. This is a little bigger than normal for a North Face jacket.

January 11, 2012

This is a great jacket that looks better than in the pics. I ordered the jacket through Altrec because I love their service. The jacket looks good but fits are not in size. I am 6.1 feet tall, 220 lbs with a 36 inch waist and the Large size would be the perfect size for me.

A big, warm parka.
November 28, 2011

I ordered the parka for my 6'4" 18 year old son and he absolutely loves it. The jacket runs big so it'll make you look a bit bulky, but what's not to expect from a quality winter parka? He wears size M t shirts and has some muscle bulk too, but the Medium sized parka fit him the best. He loves the fur-lined hood and the warmth of the 550 fill down, which will hopefully keep him warm during the upcoming New York winter. North Face products may be expensive, but you always get what you pay for!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, warm
Cons: Cost
Comfort: 5 / 5

this jacket will keep so you so warm in the blister cold without many layers. However it is bulky and you will look like you gained 20 pounds in it. If you are looking to stay warm get it, but if you plan to wear it around casually around a college campus, i would get something else.

Very Nice Parka
October 14, 2011

I was in the Military with Duty Stations in Alaska, upstate New York and Northern Germany to name a few of the very cold locations I was stationed at and I can say that compared to the Military Issue Parka, the McMurdo is a very nice Parka!!! The only issue I have with it is that the hood is too big and doesn't have an adjustment strap to be able to raise it in order to get it out of your face. Otherwise, it hangs down to far obstructing your view. Other than that, it's warm, provides ample pocket storage and is made of a very durable, waterproof and resistant material. Adequate enough to keep you warm on those frigid, icy and snowy days.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever
Cons: Cost, no hood strap adjustment
Comfort: 4 / 5
Durability: 5 / 5
Quality: 4 / 5

Very warm!
August 02, 2011

I'm 5-10. 175 lbs and ordered a large. Good thing I did. The outside material is very rugged. Very warm in the cold. Only drawback is the weight of the coat. It is a heavy jacket =(

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great value

Thick and heavy, but perfect for city dwellers
July 23, 2011

Got this jacket to use for the cold snowy winters, and it's perfect at this price point. Since the jacket runs large, it fits very well over suits sweaters. I bought a "small" and and it's still gigantic. I like the quality of the stitching and the pockets available to you, but I would like to see North Face reduce the size of the hood. The hood isn't too useful right now since it swallows my head, and since it's so big, plenty of cold wind still gets into it. Older versions of this jacket had a horizontal zipper by the breast logo. Not sure why they took it out, but I can always find a reason to have another pocket. Hopefully they'll bring it back in the future. If you are a city dweller trying to stay warm as you go to work, this is the jacket for you.

Great Product !
March 12, 2011

As many people know, this particular product (especially black color) was sold out in almost every shop during last 2010 winter. This is probably the product providing both warmest warmth and lightest (yet have many different storage spaces) weight. I highly recommend this product to anyone for emerging severe winter as this provides water-proof protection, too. I liked this black color and that's why I bought this despite its non-saled price at that time.

Awesome looking parka!
February 28, 2011

I was looking for something what could withstand Chicago's winter. The North Face Mc'Murdo was my best choice after comparing to other brands and parkas. Shipping was quick. Parka looked like a champ. I've tried it and........I tought I'm going to "drown" in it :). The size was not even close to what I wear. This parka runs way to large. I'm 6'1", weigh 205, athletic build and my regular TNF size is XL. I had to return item and buy one size smaller which fits just great.

Perfect Parka
February 27, 2011

My husband and I have started to hit the slopes again after alomst 10 years. We bought other North Face jackets that allowed us to zip in our Denali's. He noticed there were a few cold spots so we began the hunt for a new jacket for him. We first bought the McMurdo in the Large according to the size chart but once it was delivered we coud fit both him and me in the jacket! I soon returned it and exchanged it for the Medium. Now he loves it, even thinks it might be too warm! Altrec was great on price, shipping and returning!

Go big or go home
February 09, 2011

Moving from the warmth of the SW US to the Northeast in the middle of winter put me in the position of buying the warmest, most versatile coat/jacket I could find. This is a big coat, covers your hips, and is super warm. It's wind and waterproof, and the hood is big and warm. The only knock is its big, and super warm which wouldn't work in milder temperatures. It is great for snow days, walking the city streets in sub 20 degree F temps, windy, snowy, and rainy climates. I think this coat is perfect for big guys, who are new to really cold/snowy winters.

warm, durable and reliable
January 25, 2011

This is very warm and durable. I am living in NY and I am so happy that I have this in cold winter. When I leave early in the morning or come home very late, this is a must item I have to have. It looks a little big and gives no tight feeling. But in many cold situations, I prefer to be warm more than a good fit and look. Even though the cold days are 10-20 days a year, I will definitely have this one.

GREAT COAT
January 10, 2011

THIS COAT REALLY KEEPS YOU WARM. SIZING IS VERY FULL CUT. I WAS TOLD BY FRIENDS NORTH FACE TENDS TO RUN SMALL TO SIZE. THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR THIS COAT. PLENTY OF ROOM. THE HOOD IS A BIT TOO LARGE, COULD STAND TO BE SIZED DOWN, BUT OTHER THAN THAT I LOVE THE COAT. PLENTY OF POCKETS FOR GLOVES AND MISC ITEMS.

Not Warm
May 29, 2010

Honestly, I had very high expectations for this jacket. I read reviews on many web sites, did a lot of research, and set out to pick up what I thought would be a waterproof and very very warm parka. I was very disappointed. The first time I had it out, it performed fantastically - at about 38F, there were no issues. It also kept me very dry in some terrible snow/freezing rain. However, as soon as it got around 30 (or below), my arms got cold. While my core stayed warm, this jacket let me down bigtime - my Eddie Bauer down jacket could have handled down to 20 easily, and this one cost much more. If you want the style of the fur hood and won't be out for long, this will work well for you. If not, don't waste your money. While you will be dry, you won't be warm.

Great jacket.I bought it for my brother who is 5'11, medium build and a size small fit him like a medium. he said it felt like a heater when he had it on and didn't have to wear much underneath, just a t-shirt was fine.

The McMurdo was selected by my cousin who we got it for as a Christmas gift. He went for the XL and it was a little too big, so we are exchanging it. Otherwise, the price just beat other sites, but the free shipping made it well worthwhile

A Great Purchase and Some Updated Info
December 11, 2009

A lot has already been said, but let me add just a bit. 1. The construction and attention to detail is really very good--including the little things like the design and placement of the pockets, little loops to guide your headphone wire up the zipper hem on the inside of the jacket (slick!), and how/where the tension cords are pulled to tighten the bottom and torso of the jacket, etc. etc. 2. The hood can be removed and the fur can be attached directly to the collar. The result is a big furry collar that can be "flipped up" to cover ones ears and give them what is effectively a built-in scarf. (Ya Baby!) The fur attaches to the collar using both snaps AND Velcro. (It is odd that there is no Velcro on the hood, so that the fur only snaps on to it. The jacket is otherwise so well designed that I am tempted to think that there must be some reason for this that I am just not thinking of. In any event, it doesn't seem to me to be that huge of an issue.) 3. The hood does not seem huge to me, as so many have said. Granted, my hat size is 7 5/8". The hood on the L fits my noggin perfectly. 4. Overall Sizing: I was just measured for a suit. I have a 35" waist, 17" neck and 35" arm. I am just over 6', have broad shoulders, and weigh 210ish. Looking at the sizing chart, I fell in between the L and XL, and was leaning toward the XL. That would have been a BIG mistake. The L fits me PERFECTLY. 5. The Neck: People have complained that the neck is too large. I have a 17" neck and the sizing chart says the L fits up to 16.5". I can tell you that the L neck is perfect for me. It closes snugly allowing no cold air through. So, maybe it's just that people's necks are on the small size of the range rather than on the large as is mine? 6. The Shoulders: Someone mentioned that the down fill was not properly secured/quilted in the shoulders and that it consequently moved leaving one with cold spots. What? Looking inside the jacket one sees several ribs stuffed with down that run along the top of the shoulder. Seems secure and warm to me! THE UPSHOT: I could say a lot more, but I'll leave it at this. One could spend substantially more on a Canada Goose Parka or something similar, and one could certainly spend less. At the end of the day, I think this is $300 VERY well spent. This jacket easily keeps me warm over a T-shirt, in the now-growing NYC cold winter winds. I have no doubt that barring some sort of oil-spill, or other waste-related accident, I will be wearing this jacket for a long, long time.

Warm Coat!
November 16, 2009

This is my second McMurdo down coat because it is the best. No other coat is worth the money of the North Face. I hope they make it other colors in the near future so I can purchase another. My first one last about 5 years, so that is good for the work that I do and the abuse that it takes on a yearly basis.

My husband loves it!
March 21, 2009

I bought it for my husband who is 6'6" and has a hard time finding cloths that fit. It's great it's long enough and soooo warm.
