Description

A proven and popular classic design among customers, this Men's Mountain Light Jacket is a fully waterproof and breathable shell that is Zip-in compatible with identically-sized insulation jackets from The North Face. The lightweight profile makes it an ideal choice for climbing, backpacking and mountaineering, although the versatility makes it a popular choice for a range of other outdoor activities, including skiing, snowshoeing and sea kayaking. The Mountain Light Jacket for men has a two-ply Gore-Tex® Performance fabric that resists abrasion from rock and ice. It's not uncommon to read consumer reviews from satisfied customers who have owned earlier--and heavier--incarnations of this quality hard shell jacket for a decade or more. To keep the jacket design light, The North Face modified the hand pockets to do double duty as vent openings. If you need a secure, non-vent pocket for your wallet or phone, the zippered Napoleon chest pocket is a perfect solution. Inside the Men's Mountain Light Jacket is a stretch pocket designed to carry a water bottle. The removable drop hood is fully adjustable and offers weather coverage for the lower portion of your face.

Great Jacket
July 26, 2006

It is a great jacket. I have been searching for an all weather Gore-Tex shell. I wad it up in a bag everyday and it still looks presentable.

Great gear
September 05, 2005

Optimized for mountaineering but suitable for a range of outdoor activities, The North Face Mountain Light Jacket combines the best in durable waterproof and breathable technology with a lightweight profile that's equally at home backpacking, traveling and skiing. This practical design saves nearly 300 grams of weight over The North Face Mountain Guide Jacket without sacrificing key backcountry features. Up top is a fully adjustable hood that accommodates a helmet and also detaches on sunny afternoons. Along the chest area are core vent pockets that can be opened or zippered shut depending on your internal thermostat. While The North Face Mountain Light Jacket doesn't offer the stretch performance of top shells and parkas, it keeps you covered without pushing outdoor budgets beyond your grasp.

Fabulous Gift!

The coat's quality is great. It is exactly like the one's I have seen in the stores.

Great Jacket
February 15, 2009

This is my first North Face jacket and couldn't be happier. I also have a Arc'teryx Theta Ar jacket and the mountain light does a better job for half the frice. Ive read alot of reviews knocking the mtn. light for the zipper...i mean yeah there is fabric covering it but it doesn't make it impossible to zip...the arcteryx gortex zippers are twice as hard to zip and doesn't look as good. Also the goretex on the mountain light jacket is very comfortable even wearing a t-shirt. Unlike the Theta ar which the fabric is so stiff and really just not comfortable on skin. The breathability is above average and pit zips make it even better. This jacket is the all purpose, take it on the appalachian trail or to just take the dog for a walk on a cool day! Looks kind of blah on the website but very nice fit, im 6' 170 and a medium fits great, like it was made for me!

Mountain Light Jacket
February 19, 2006

great jacket and customer service. only complaint is that it was very wrinnkled when recived and its hard to get them out on a jacket like this

Extreme functionality,warmth and protection.
April 23, 2006

I love TNF mtn. light jacket. Recently hit the slopes for some last minute action and was not disappointed. The gore-tex was unbelievable through the wind and wet snow I experienced.W as warm and dry , w/o a heavy layer into the low 20s,and with a fleece as a mid-layer into the single digits. Drawstringed hood and hem give super tight and comfy fit. Everything I expected it to be. The added bonus was Altrecs price of 25% off list.

Wear it at altitude
May 28, 2005

I wore this on Kili hike from 12-15K without liner. Later added a Denali and was comfortable all the way to the top. This jacket was great, and was very comfortable. It did a fair job of protecting me from wind. Without a liner you may start to feel it at winds over 30 kts. It's very light weight compared to many other shells. I carried it everday in my pack bundled up and it unwrinkles nicely after a few minutes wear. Here at home I've used it on rainy days and it kept me dry as expected.

March 21, 2011

This jacket is a great product. The rain protection is awesome. It was out in a downpour and didn't feel a drop. My north face denali jackets zips in easily. The collar is roomy without being bulky. The only downside is the absence of a zippered chest pocket.

I have two TNF Mountain Light Jackets. I had to send my first MLJ for a repair and didn't want to go without one for a month, so I bought a second. I use the jacket for snowboarding mostly and am very happy with the performance. The newer one feels lighter in weight and has the new feature of a stow away pocket. The newer MLJ has a ripstop type quality to the material. I miss the sleeve pocket from my first jacket, but that's about all I miss. I purchased a large. I am 6 ft tall and 175 pounds. I use a TNF Denali fleece as a zip in. Sometimes, that combination is too warm, especially if I have my long underwear on also. The MJL is a fantastic shell.

Great Shell
January 19, 2005

I got this for my boyfriend as a shell for his fleece (the zip-in compatible feature is great!), and as a raincoat. The material is light, buttery soft and impressively breathable. he loves the fact that he could go hiking and climbing in it, very flexible.

Great Coat
December 22, 2004

This jacket is very warm and element proof. I have only two minor complaints. The first is that my NF Denali fleece (circa 1997-98) doesn't zip in easily to the new Mountain Light. One side zips right in, the other side is a struggle. I guess it's time for a new Denali fleece...it's kind of beat up anyway. The second issue is with the outside chest pocket. I like to keep my cell phone there but it is impossible to get it out quickly because of the stiff waterproof zipper. I've missed so many calls because of this. All in all the jacket does it's job and looks great.

Great Fit and Function
February 10, 2008

Jacket has an excellent fit and performs well is many weather conditions. Well worth the money for what it provides.

Meets all expectations
April 15, 2007

I've been looking for a nice lightweight jacket for sometime now, one that will provide some warmth plus is water resistant or water proof. Finding one that is GoreTex at a reasonable price makes things even better! Bought the jacket on sale (which makes it even nicer), and wore it for the first time on a ski trip to Park City. The jacket packs nicely and doesn't take up a lot of room. On the mountain, I was very pleased with the jacket. Mobility during skiing was good. Very happy with the jacket so far.

Great TNF product
February 04, 2011

I recently purchased the Mountain Light jacket to compliment my other TNF products. I really like the fact that I can zip-in my Denali jacket, and my Nuptse vest; thinking about adding the Massif jacket also. I have tried both of them and they work great together to help keep me warm during the frigid temps outside. I am 6'3", 205 and the XL fits the best, even the arms are long enough: I usually run into a problem with arm length and have to go with a XXL and then the body of the jacket is too big. I also like the fact that the jacket is Gore-Tex; best waterproof material I have come across. It is an investment, but one that will last you for a long time.

great jacket
June 07, 2010

Good jacket with some improvements over the previous model. Biggest improvement is the lower face protection when the jacket is zipped all the way up. With the previous model, there was not enough room for your chin with the coat zipped up...now there is, great for those cold days on the lift.

Great Jacket!
May 24, 2005

I love it

Lightweight and stormproof!
March 14, 2005

The Mountain Light Jacket is truly stormproof and the XCR Gortex is noticably lighter than my other Gortex garbs. There is only one feature I wish TNF had included... a stow away hood. It zips off, but what a hassle if being used in the backcountry. However, the sale price more than made up for this missing feature. Ventilation is good for moderate aerobic activities.

Terrific service

I received my Northface Summit series jacket promptly. Tracking my package was very easy on your site. Congratulations on running an excellent on-line store.

Great all around rain jacket
April 03, 2011

The first thing I noticed when opening the package was that this jacket is much lighter than any other Goretex jacket I've owned. I can throw it in my backpack when I'm expecting rain, and I barely feel the extra weight. I'm 6'3", 200lbs and the XL was a perfect fit. I have plenty of room to layer up underneath, and it doesn't look too big when I wear it by itself. I've only worn this jacket out in the rain once since I bought it, but I was very happy with the performance. The zipper that connects the hood to the jacket only goes 50% of the way across the collar. I was initially worried about wind blowing through the back of the hood, but this didn't end up being an issue. The hood and collar overlap by about 2 inches, and that was sufficient to stop wind from penetrating. I was able to stand in wind that was strong enough to blow over metal patio furniture without feeling so much as a breeze through the jacket. It's basically like walking around in a tent. I haven't owned this jacket long enough to speak to the durability, but from what I've seen so far I would definitely recommend it.

only lasted 13 yrs
October 17, 2007

I finally had to retire my Mountain Light. I'm very disappointed because it only lasted 13 years. ;) It's still functional and waterproof but it was starting to look its age. Some fading, a failed stitch in the liner, and a failed stitch in the waist "powder" drawstring (which isn't a feature anymore). I live in New England and have worn this thing hiking, biking, skiing, and every time it rains. I have literally worn it almost every day of every winter for the past 13 years. It's been crammed in packs and has absorbed some nasty falls while skiing. The best thing about it is that it is useful year round. It's not too heavy to wear in a summer rainstorm and it's waterproof/windproof enough to be used as an external layer in temps well below zero F. I just bought another one. I hope it lasts as long as the first.

awesome.
December 03, 2007

This jacket is unbelievable. It is extremely thin and lightweight yet does an excellent job keeping you dry and warm from the elements. This will be my first winter in Chicago and armed with my denali and this jacket, I'm sure I will get by just fine. If you're looking for a versatile/lightweight jacket that can be used in cool and extreme conditions, look no further. The North Face Denali fleece is the perfect complement to this jacket and will keep you warm in freezing temperatures.

great fit
December 20, 2009

I bought this for my brother for our upcoming hiking trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is excellent quality and just the right weight. Fit is perfect.

Great lightweight winter jacket!
January 24, 2010

This is a great lightweight winter jacket. It is very warm and I can still add an inner jacket if need be. The Gore-tex material is soft and keeps out the wind and the rain. I usually wear an XL, but was able to wear a L and still have plenty of length in the arms. This is the first North Face jacket I have owned, but definitely won't be the last!

Amazing jacket for all around outdoors
February 03, 2005

A wonderful jacket, and great service from Altrec! I used it skiing this weekend and didn't find the zippers annoying at all, its better that flaps going in the wind. It fits like a glove, and Altrec was the only place that had it in the lovely red. I like it so much I think I will shower in it for now on. A+

Well made
December 13, 2009

I just got mine, a large size in mountain blue color. Looks great and well made. I have yet to try it out in rain. Overall, I am happy with the purchase and Altrec service. My shipping came in within a week of order.

This is the One!
January 20, 2006

I've tried them all and this one is the one I reach for. I'll buy another as soon as they get some better colors.

TNF Mountain Light Jacket
December 21, 2004

Great jacket for the price. The Gore-Tex XCR membrane seems to work well and the jacket is very adaptable. Handles cool weather without the liner and frigid weather with a good fleece. The jacket is very light but does an excellent job of keeping me warm. We'll see how it holds up quality wise but initially anyway I'm happy with the jacket.

Awesome jacket, better service
August 16, 2010

This is an all around great gortex jacket. Simple and utilitarian. The shipping guys also helped get me the jacket just in time for my trip.

Another good north face jacket
March 30, 2011

Replacing an old worn out North Face jacket with this one. Seems to be every bit as good as the old one, which lasted many years. As always, price is high but not too much else out there that compares.

Exceptional quality and versatile
September 13, 2010

Great jacket for below 55 degrees. You can add zip ins to go down to 0. Completely waterproof.

AWESOME JACKET
February 21, 2006

I purchased this jacket last year and I am extremely pleased with it and since have been an advocate for it. You can ball it up to nearly nothing and then pull it out, and it its as though you never did so. When it rains, I walk several hundred yards with the hood on and as I enter a buikding, people are standing around waiting for the rain to stop (its that bad!!!) and I pull my coat off, and Im DRY AS A BONE. They look at my jacket with amazement!!! When its chilly out, I can wear this jacket without the liner, zip it up all of the way and when breathing into the jacket, I stay very comfortable. I own the lighter fleece liner for the jacket and its too warm... In extreme conditions, rain, snow, 40+ mph winds, wind chill nearing 0 degrees... when the jacket is sealed off at the waist and hooded up... with good gloves... I was extremely confortable. BUY IT!!! Only complaint... Ive worn it so much since Ive had it the past year, I wonder how long it will last for the money I paid. Its in excellent shape, but I look at it and wonder.

Great jacket at a great price
February 23, 2006

I wore it mountain biking recently, and it performed well in rainy conditions. I would prefer larger pit zips for ventilation, but in all, a great jacket.

Great Jacket!
June 02, 2005

Have not had a chance to truly field test, but did wear for a week of rain and drizzle in North Dakota during the Spring. The jacket is extremely comfortable, light and is well ventilated. Looking forward to testing it under more stressful extremes.

Great all around jacket
March 28, 2011

This jacket is perfect if you are looking to buy one jacket for everything. It is not an extremely technical jacket and if your primary goal is for extreme alpine adventure and climbing then you might want to keep looking. If you are looking for a everyday jacket that can be used as a ski shell or used on a backpacking trip, then look no further. I use the shell by itself down to about 40 degrees before I zip in another layer. Only complaint is the rubber wrist straps. Not sure why they would not use soft material but all in all a great purchase.

Nice Jacket
March 15, 2005

Great shell to use by itself or with a zip-in fleece. The price is the only thing that drops it from 5 stars to 4 stars in my assessment.

Best jacket I ever obtained
May 21, 2009

I always wanted this jacket but never had the money to buy it. It is so comfortable and light, and it does a good job on the wind. I just got it yesterday and tried it on today which was a windy day, and the wind proof was so nice compared to all my other jackets. I will always keep one of these jackets in my closet.

Nice fit with a style appropriate for wearing to work
June 09, 2009

I have the TNF Paclight Goretex jacket and wear it a lot both as a rain jacket and a wind shell but it is a bit too thin for cold days. So I decided to give the Mountain Light jacket a try. It is great and has the added advantage of letting you zip in other TNF jackets to increase the warmth. I like it a lot. I also like that the hood is fully detachable and does not just roll into the collar like my Paclite Goretex jacket.

Great Jacket
January 10, 2006

I purchased this jacket as a shell of my Denali. The combination is perfect in both function and color. They keep me warm in super cold condition here in Syracuse and gray/red(shell/denali) look nice. If you are looking for a shell of your denali, I highly recommend this product.

Great jacket for wet and windy conditions
February 05, 2005

This jacket fits great and performs increadibly well in wet and windy conditions. I've owned Mountain Light jackets for the past 10 years and I have never had any problems with them. Though I think the quality of NorthFace jackets have diminished over the years slightly, the quality is still very good.

December 29, 2010

My wife bought this shell for me a few months ago. Since then we've had torrential downpours and blizzard-like conditions. I couldn't be happier with the performance of this shell. The Gore-Tex keeps me dry and the overall construction of the coat is designed to keep rain from entering through vulnerable places. Paired with my Pumori Polartec 200 fleece, this is a formidable winter jacket that is not too bulky, yet still provides plenty of warmth and protection from the elements.

Outstanding Gore-Tex Jacket and shell
January 19, 2010

This jacket is perfect for warm rainy days and very cold winter days when combined with a internal lining. I have many Gore-Tex jackets but I seem to wear this one more than the others

This was a gift for my husband. He loves it! Thank you for the excellent customer service. Fast shipping, too.

very light shell
March 11, 2012

I bought this shell as I wanted to make better use of the my zip-in compatible TNF fleece. I found it even Lighter than I expected. I am 5'9 140pound and the Small fits well. But I think it would be even better if there are under-arm zips.

Pros: light weight, zip-in compatible, Cons: no under arm zips

Meets my every need
March 06, 2005

North Face products are very well made - worth the extra price. This particular jacket is just what I need for my walk on the Appalachian Trail.

All perfect.
March 07, 2005

I ordered The North Face jacket from Ecuador (South America). It's a wonderful jacket, and it arrived very fast. I'm very happy with my Mountain Light jacket, and the service offered by Altrec.com is perfect.

A great jacket
December 13, 2010

This is a great mid weight shell. Well built, durable and wind and water proof. A bit too heavy for summer but perfect for about any other season either alone or with liner.

Great but Expensive Jacket
November 21, 2004

Provides excellent combination of warmth and comfort. It keeps the cold air out while still allowing for a good range of movement. The only downside to this jacket is the high cost

Fabulous!
January 12, 2006

I purchased the Northface Mountain Light Jacket as a x-mas gift for my boyfriend. He loved it! Alrec's service was incredible! The jacket was sold out everywhere. Just when I was about to give up I found it on Altrec. I received the jacket within 5 days! I'm so impressed with the service I am referring this company to all my friends.

THE BEST !!!
January 24, 2006

I've lived in the northwest all my life and i've never seen a jacket that could stand up to the harsh weather that we have here. Plus it's a really good looking jacket.

The Truth
June 09, 2005

Friends, If you only purchase one piece of gear besides boots buy a nice waterproof shell. This jacket is a must have if you choose northface.

Men's mountain light jacket
January 19, 2006

I love the jacket! It's proving everything that I expected it to be. It's light, warm, wind and water proof. Great quality and looks great as well.

Northface Mens Mountain light jacket fantastic in all respects
March 26, 2008

This jacket is the answer to what I was looking for. Light, comfortable, wind and water proof. When the temp is above zero and I am moving about and I have a fleece vest on it is warm enough for me. I also bought a denali fleece jacket that zips into this jacket and really won't need it until it is below zero here in Minnesota. Too warm. So I need to buy a light fleece for most of the winter months. So now I can throw away most of what is in my closet as this one outer shell, vests and fleece liners provide all that I need all year long.

Recommend this jecket
January 07, 2010

Man this jacket is for real. Best one I have owned. Do spend the little extra for the gore-tex. With a zip in 200 TKA cutris liner I never get cold or wet!!!!!!!!

Super Jacket
February 06, 2007

Works well with the North Face inserts. Know when you put in the insert it won't fit as snug as it does by itself. Colors? Industrial Blue...isn't blue, but grey. Other than that it is a great jacket with or without a shell. Worked great in Tahoe skiing.

exellent jacket
May 18, 2007

these jacket it's other level. an exellent jacket.

Jacket Function
February 24, 2005

Love the jacket. The jacket is very technical and functionable. The elbows and arms are designed for better mobility. Vents work, but would be better if it was under the pits. This jacket can take a pounding. I wiped out hard a few time on the slopes and the jackets just has little scuff here and there. The hood works well at extreme conditions. The more you pull it the more it covers, expecially with goggles. Velcro flaps gotta go. Would be nice with Arc zippers.

Extremely Nice Jacket
December 27, 2004

This is my sixth piece of NorthFace Raingear. All are great! The only drawback, and it's common to them all, is that the zippers are a bit difficult to get engaged in the field. The velcro zipper guards are also a pain under field conditions. Northface also stands behind its products as well as the best.

Poor first experience
January 09, 2011

We ordered this jacket as a christmas gift and when it arrived brand new it had a huge tear in the pocket. I don't know if this was a manufacturer's defect but it made the experience very poor. The second one we received was fine.

Outstanding protection
March 23, 2005

Just got back from a week out on the trail and my TNF Mountain Light Jacket gave me awesome protection from the elements. It was a pleasure to wear and kept me dry and out of the wind. When it got colder, out came the zip in fleece and I was smiling again!

Oh so Warm
December 13, 2005

Haven't had the jacket long. Baught it for mostly wet and cold conditions. I needed something for my Fleece to zip into, and this has kept me dry and warm. Can't wait to try it out on the slopes in two weeks. The only thing I wish it had that the Varius Guide has is the Powder Guard, but for the amount of skiing I do I thought this was the better match for me. Highly recomend

Great Jacket.
August 30, 2004

Nice jacket. I wad it up in a bag everyday and it still looks presentable. I can tell it will require a liner so I went ahead and purchased one for winter. So far I would purchase again. Only complaint is the zipper cover. Gets in the way when zipping up. Would be nice to have the Arc type zippers.

Great Jacket
April 02, 2005

Great Jacket !! Lightweight , perfect fit, great feeling, Gore Tex and most of all an excleent price here @ Altrec. I definietly would buy another one if offered at discounted prices like Atrec.

Gold Standard
January 16, 2011

The North Face Mountain Light Jacket is the gold standard for Men's Alpine endeavors. Its Goretex technology is often imitated but never duplicated.Totally windproof, waterproof, and warm.I always come back to it. Only minor issue is that it runs a little bit large.

Great versatility and fit
January 06, 2006

I have been searching for an all weather Gore-Tex shell. I commute by bike to work everyday and needed a shell that would keep me dry, fit well (not to long or baggy) and be zip-in compatible with warmer fleece inserts. The North Face Mountain Light Jacket was the solution. Rain, snow and sleet just bead and roll off keeping me dry and warm from the nasty New England elements.

Great jacket but didn't feel true to size
October 13, 2007

The only issue with this jacket was that it was a little loose on me even though I bought the jacket in my size. However with that aside I love how its waterproof(gore-tex), zip in compatible, and is very stylish. This is a great jacket to take skiing and is very durable and mobile.

great product
December 17, 2004

This is a great jacket. It is light, warm, and especially breathable.

This is a great jacket with or without the fleece liner.

I have had both liner and jacket for about 10 years and loved it so much I finely bought one for my husband and son.

Best North Face Jacket for all around uso
December 28, 2009

Great jacket ! The North Face has made this one for years. My sons have worn these jackets all weather conditions in Tahoe N.E. Calif. for years with just T-shirts underneath. Best value for your snowboarder or skier. They last forever with proper care!

Best jacket I've ever seen!
June 27, 2008

I have three of these. The first was a gift that cost about $500. I ski in this jacket with two layers of vapor wicking polyester shirts underneath and the combination is perfect - not sweaty not cold. In a full-on downpour of rain: warm and dry. Lightweight, compresses to small package. The original jacket still in good shape. (I bought the other two when North Face stopped making them a few years ago and I couldn't face the future without one.) Best jacket I've ever seen.
