Great pants - inseams on the shorter side
April 23, 2012

I love the pants but fair warning to tall guys - I'm 6'4" and the 34in inseam pants are too short (by at least at inch). It would be great if Altrec kept in stock some other options for longer inseams (Like Columbia's Silver Ridge Convertibles in tall sizes - they offer a 36 in length.

Best Zip-offs I've Tried
April 09, 2012

This is the second pair I've purchased. I love how light these pants are. Even more, I like how The North Face makes their zippers so that they don't rub against your leg or catch your leg hair. I recommend these pants to all of my friends looking for flexible hiking pants/shorts.

Love these!
March 25, 2012

This is the third pair of paramounts I have bought. I love them. They are super comfortable. I think the length runs a little bit long so I order the medium short (I have 33 inch waist, and 31 inseam). The regular length is too long for me. Highly recommend these pants!

do it all pants
March 23, 2012

The ultimate traveling abroad pants... actually who am I kidding I use these pants for almost everything. I now never have to worry about what pants/shorts to pack because I've got the best of both. They fit great and look good at the same time. I've worn them both out on the trail and casually around town. On the trail they performed as they should with the added convenience of becoming shorts as the temp started to rise and more importantly when I had to cross a few small streams. Wearing them out and about was just as easy, paired with a fleece and some regular shoes they pass for your typically styled cargo pants. The material feels rugged and has definitely survived the abuse of multiple wears and washes. Compared to other brands they can seem a little stiffer but the full range of motion is still there. So no worries. The water repellency makes it my go to pants on rainy days too... no more soggy jeans!

Go to pants or shorts!
March 03, 2012

I bought a pair last year and liked them so much I bought another pair this year in a different color. I've started buying them as gifts for the guys in my family. These things are extremely durable, although wearing them as shorts for an entire warm season with associated washes will cause a color mismatch when you go to zip on the legs at some point when weather cools down. I may wash the zipped-off legs everytime I wash the shorts this season to keep the colors even! I'm a 33/30 pants size and a medium/short fits great.

Excellent Fit and Features
January 21, 2012

These pants fit perfectly! I tried many different brands and sizes, and these were just perfect. I am 6'3' tall and weigh 205#. My normal pant size is 36W and 34L. These Large-Regular North Face Paramount Peak pants fit perfectly. I especially liked the ease of converting from full length to shorts in just one minute. The zippered pocket was great for security when traveling overseas and in crowds. I got the black pants and they served as my "dress" outfit when going out to dinner. Overall, an A+.

good versatile pants
September 08, 2011

I ordered these pants in a size 'small', option 'long' thinking that they might be just a smidge long given the information I gathered from the website regarding sizing. These pants were much too long. They were probably a 34" inseam. I was able to exchange them for an option 'regular' which should be 31" inseam (info received via live chat with sales person). I'm still waiting for this new, correct size so I can't speak about this size yet. The waist sizing was right on. The help I received from the live chat was great. The person on the other end helped me take care of the return number and helped make the purchase for the new pants, which was a big help. Regarding the design/quality of the pants, I really liked the construction and stitching, which seemed like it would hold up well. When the legs were zipped off the shorts seemed a little 'stiff' at the end of the shorts due to the zipper, but not so much that it was uncomfortable--just maybe a little less 'sylish'. Overall I think these pants will be perfect for my use, and I'm excited to get the new, correct size shipped to me.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, zipper pocket is a plus!
Cons: Cost, shorts might be a little stiff, cargo pockets a little small

Great Hiking pants
August 12, 2011

I have bought several light weight hiking pants that were more cost effective but they were never quite what I wanted. These North Face pants are. The pockets are laid out right and the security pocket is a nice added feature. Dual Velcro on the side pockets help keep the flap closed at all times. They are a little heavy but they do breathe well. The colored zippers are a plus. They do run a little large but the extra room when climbing and the belt make it not much of a concern. My next pants will be another pair Paramount Peak.

Comfortable and Versatile
July 12, 2011

I got these for a hiking trip to Colorado. These pants are light weight, yet durable. They are great for starting out before sunrise in the cold mountain air; when it warms up, just zip off the legs. It's also nice to zip the legs on when mosquitoes are a problem. I actually wear these most of the time as shorts. They don't look like convertible pants when the legs are off. I love the zipper side pocket. You don't have to worry about valuables falling out. I actually fell in a creek with these on. I had fast drying synthetic underwear on underneath. It was no time at all before I was completely dry. My only complaint is that despite having side leg zippers for easy on-off, I could not get the legs off over size 11 1/2 hiking boots, not even close. This is not such a big deal to me, as I won't be taking the legs on and off frequently. They might work fine with smaller low cut shoes. I would definitely recommend these pants to anyone despite this issue.

Purchased for vacation!
July 11, 2011

I purchased these convertible pants for a vacation overseas because I wanted to pack light and needed both short and long pants during the trip. There are not a lot of manufacturers making pants that fit a short guy like me, but these came close. I'm a 29" inseam and I'm guessing these were about 30"-31". I also like North Face products. The pants were really comfortable and allowed for quick changes into and out of shorts. Quality seems good but I'll defer judgement until I've had them awhile. I had to buy the mediums because the small was too tight (I tried on for size at a traditional retailer) but the mediums are baggy (I'm a 32 waist). All in all, I'm happy with this purchase and the prompt shipment by Altrec!

I have an older pair of Paramount Peak Convertible Pants and found them to be comfortable and versatile, so I went for another pair. Good for casual wear as well as outdoors wear. I tend to run warm so I get good year round use from these. The fit is good and allows for full range of motion in all dimensions. I'm 6'1 and 205 lbs and the large is a nice fit. Plenty of pockets and zippers for gadget storage.

June 16, 2011

These are my first, but won't be my last, pair of Paramount Peak Convertible Pants. These pants have allowed me to trim a little weight from my pack. Great array of pockets. Not sure if they are designed for it, but I had trouble trying to put the pant legs on while wearing my boots. It was doable, but it would be much easier to simply take off the boots.

First purchased a pair of these pants about 8 years ago, they lasted through 5 rugged climbing seasons in the Olympic Mountains then finally had to be replaced. Both of the replacements lasted only 1 season each, the most reason pair only about 6 climbs. I was very happy to find the North face Paramount Peak again in my size and at a great price.

girls don't like guys who wear cargo pants!!
April 16, 2011

i have four pair of these which I rotate and wear everyday of the week. I have had 6 pair total - had to put 2 pair to rest. The design has changed over the years (as other reviews have elaborated on). This newer version is not my favorite, but I am still not ready to look for another brand of lightweight cargo pants. They have performed well for me over the years - durable, quick drying, plenty of pockets, dirt resistant, comfortable to wear everyday, and the ability to wear all 4 seasons (with lightweight wool long-johns on really cold days). They are wind resistant and of course have the ability to become shorts. I do like that the newer version has a longer inseam as shorts. My only real complaint is not necessarily with the pants, it's more about the fact that I have been teased and chided by women for always wearing cargo pants. I was even told straight out that "women don't like guys who wear cargo pants". My response was to buy another pair. Needless to say the woman who told me that and I are NOT DATING!! Okay, maybe wearing them everyday is a bit excessive . . .

Love these Pants
March 24, 2011

These are quite possibly the best pants I've ever owned...wear them whenever I possibly can. As versatile a pant/short as I can imagine (worn them to places like Disney World and the bottom of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone). Have had the pants for almost a year now and they show literally no signs of wear yet. Can't say enough good about these pants.

I have been pleased with the purchase. The first pair was sent back because of the length. Altrec was great with the return. I have loved the product so much I am going to order a second. Beware though, I am 6' with a 32'' seam. The regular in length was way to long for me. Go with the short.

Also Great in Cold Weather
February 04, 2011

I purchased the pants with the expectation of using them in the summer. After purchasing them I had a chance to use them for a ski trip. The weather was such that I didn't want to wear my real cold weather ski pants. I wore the pants with a light set of thermals under it. i was amazed at how comfortable I was. In the afternoon the weather changed and it started snowing. The pants did not collect a great deal of snow on them and I stayed much dryer that I thought I would. It is very nice to have an alternative now over the normal bulky ski pants. I really like the product and feel good about my purchase. Very fast delivery and fit as expected.

initial impression
February 02, 2011

I selected these pants for use as (1) durable and sufficiently stylish pants for light tourist travel in Europe and as (2) hiking pants for hut-to-hut walking in the Alps. Being that I received these pants only yesterday, this review mainly addresses only their first of these intended uses. The pants fit better than most jeans I've ever slipped on and I am satisfied with the look, weight, feel, closures and (7) pockets. I ordered the same size (36 waist, 34 inseam) that I use for jeans and dress slacks. I unzipped the legs and rezipped them without difficulty. In my 40 years of hiking (diverse environments) I haven't owned a pair of full pant-leg hiking pants, getting by with walking shorts, long johns and zippered wind pants. I think these pants will be roomy enough for mountain walking, but I expect that I'll unzip the legs where scrambling, crawling, etc. is required, to feel less restricted. But here I am speculating.

Perfect for the jungle
January 28, 2011

Hard to beat these North Face Paramount Peak Convertibles in the tropics. They fit right to size, look good, shed water, dry fast, and keep you cool and dry. Took this pair through a Rain Forest in Costa Rica last week and they kept me cool and dry despite constant humidity and rain. So damp that anything cotton would not air dry, or couldn't be hung up [would soak the moisture out of the air and be wet in an hour]. These pants are a little heavier material and that's just great when you are in contact with rocks or plants on the trail. Love them.

Best Zip-Off Pants!
December 11, 2010

I bought these for travel, and the occasional hike. These pants are awesome!!! I bought 1 size smaller than I thought, and they fit great. My waist is around 34", and I went with the medium. I have no doubt that they will last for years, and I'm going to pick up a couple more pair. The stretchy waist makes for a custom fit, and the belt is a great addition to the pants. I look forward to many years of use with these.
