Comfortable pants
November 11, 2010

I usually try to stay away from The North Face products due to price and sliding quality. I normally buy/use Columbia products, which I love. I tried these pants on at [a local sporting goods store], and really liked the fit and comfort. They are thicker than my Columbia pants, and that is one of the reasons that I purchased these- for colder weather hiking/backpacking. I've only used them once so far, on a backpacking trip to Virgin Falls, so I can't comment on their quality/durability yet(and is why I only gave them 4 stars). I can only say the following; The small/regular is the size that fit me best. I am about 6', 170 lbs, and wear a 30 in waist and 34 in length in Levi's jeans. The quality seems to be better than it has been in the last several years(according to people I know that use North Face products). These pants are thicker/heavier than most "lightweight" pants that are designed for hiking/backpacking. That is not necessarily a bad thing: thicker pants for colder weather or less strenuous activity, thinner pants for warmer weather or more strenuous activity. After wearing these pants while backpacking, I can say that they are too thick/heavy for hot, or even warm, weather. The temps on my trip were between 45(night) and 75(day). During the day, while hiking, the pants were way too warm. When not moving, and when it cooled off in the evening, they were just the right thickness. The pockets/storage of these pants is very good. Plenty of pockets, and in good locations. Again, I can't comment an durability yet, but the fit is what sold me. They served the purpose I had in mind for them(colder weather backpacking/hiking), and they are comfortable, so overall I am happy with my purchase. The only gripe I have- and is not specific to these pants- is the price. The North Face products as a whole are pricey, and usually never go on sale.

Found these pants in a store, but they didn't have my size in short. Went on line and bought a pair from Altrec. Was impressed with the quality. Well constructed and well thought out. They even have a zipper in the bottom so you can convert them into shorts without having to take off your shoes.

Go to pants or shorts!
March 03, 2012

I bought a pair last year and liked them so much I bought another pair this year in a different color. I've started buying them as gifts for the guys in my family. These things are extremely durable, although wearing them as shorts for an entire warm season with associated washes will cause a color mismatch when you go to zip on the legs at some point when weather cools down. I may wash the zipped-off legs everytime I wash the shorts this season to keep the colors even! I'm a 33/30 pants size and a medium/short fits great.

I accidentally purchased the wrong pants and it was a easy fix! The North Face convertible pants run slight long. My dad is a 34/29 normally, but in order to get the right color. I had to get Medium Waist and Regular Length. Hard to alter now, so next time I would get Short Length! Otherwise great product!

Perfect for the jungle
January 28, 2011

Hard to beat these North Face Paramount Peak Convertibles in the tropics. They fit right to size, look good, shed water, dry fast, and keep you cool and dry. Took this pair through a Rain Forest in Costa Rica last week and they kept me cool and dry despite constant humidity and rain. So damp that anything cotton would not air dry, or couldn't be hung up [would soak the moisture out of the air and be wet in an hour]. These pants are a little heavier material and that's just great when you are in contact with rocks or plants on the trail. Love them.

Great pants - inseams on the shorter side
April 23, 2012

I love the pants but fair warning to tall guys - I'm 6'4" and the 34in inseam pants are too short (by at least at inch). It would be great if Altrec kept in stock some other options for longer inseams (Like Columbia's Silver Ridge Convertibles in tall sizes - they offer a 36 in length.

The ultimate traveling abroad pants... actually who am I kidding I use these pants for almost everything. I now never have to worry about what pants/shorts to pack because I've got the best of both. They fit great and look good at the same time. I've worn them both out on the trail and casually around town. On the trail they performed as they should with the added convenience of becoming shorts as the temp started to rise and more importantly when I had to cross a few small streams. Wearing them out and about was just as easy, paired with a fleece and some regular shoes they pass for your typically styled cargo pants. The material feels rugged and has definitely survived the abuse of multiple wears and washes. Compared to other brands they can seem a little stiffer but the full range of motion is still there. So no worries. The water repellency makes it my go to pants on rainy days too... no more soggy jeans!

October 15, 2012

These pants are incredible. I was pleasantly surprised when I got them. A lot better than I thought they would be. The sizing was difficult to predict so I went with another reviewers recommendation and it was perfect. I usually wear a 32-34 waste and 31/32 inseam and the mediums were perfect. I haven't been able to put these pants to the test yet, so I am grading durability and quality based on what I can see so far.

I have been pleased with the purchase. The first pair was sent back because of the length. Altrec was great with the return. I have loved the product so much I am going to order a second. Beware though, I am 6' with a 32'' seam. The regular in length was way to long for me. Go with the short.

girls don't like guys who wear cargo pants!!
April 16, 2011

i have four pair of these which I rotate and wear everyday of the week. I have had 6 pair total - had to put 2 pair to rest. The design has changed over the years (as other reviews have elaborated on). This newer version is not my favorite, but I am still not ready to look for another brand of lightweight cargo pants. They have performed well for me over the years - durable, quick drying, plenty of pockets, dirt resistant, comfortable to wear everyday, and the ability to wear all 4 seasons (with lightweight wool long-johns on really cold days). They are wind resistant and of course have the ability to become shorts. I do like that the newer version has a longer inseam as shorts. My only real complaint is not necessarily with the pants, it's more about the fact that I have been teased and chided by women for always wearing cargo pants. I was even told straight out that "women don't like guys who wear cargo pants". My response was to buy another pair. Needless to say the woman who told me that and I are NOT DATING!! Okay, maybe wearing them everyday is a bit excessive . . .

January 21, 2012

These pants fit perfectly! I tried many different brands and sizes, and these were just perfect. I am 6'3' tall and weigh 205#. My normal pant size is 36W and 34L. These Large-Regular North Face Paramount Peak pants fit perfectly. I especially liked the ease of converting from full length to shorts in just one minute. The zippered pocket was great for security when traveling overseas and in crowds. I got the black pants and they served as my "dress" outfit when going out to dinner. Overall, an A+.

initial impression
February 02, 2011

I selected these pants for use as (1) durable and sufficiently stylish pants for light tourist travel in Europe and as (2) hiking pants for hut-to-hut walking in the Alps. Being that I received these pants only yesterday, this review mainly addresses only their first of these intended uses. The pants fit better than most jeans I've ever slipped on and I am satisfied with the look, weight, feel, closures and (7) pockets. I ordered the same size (36 waist, 34 inseam) that I use for jeans and dress slacks. I unzipped the legs and rezipped them without difficulty. In my 40 years of hiking (diverse environments) I haven't owned a pair of full pant-leg hiking pants, getting by with walking shorts, long johns and zippered wind pants. I think these pants will be roomy enough for mountain walking, but I expect that I'll unzip the legs where scrambling, crawling, etc. is required, to feel less restricted. But here I am speculating.

Comfortable and Versatile
July 12, 2011

I got these for a hiking trip to Colorado. These pants are light weight, yet durable. They are great for starting out before sunrise in the cold mountain air; when it warms up, just zip off the legs. It's also nice to zip the legs on when mosquitoes are a problem. I actually wear these most of the time as shorts. They don't look like convertible pants when the legs are off. I love the zipper side pocket. You don't have to worry about valuables falling out. I actually fell in a creek with these on. I had fast drying synthetic underwear on underneath. It was no time at all before I was completely dry. My only complaint is that despite having side leg zippers for easy on-off, I could not get the legs off over size 11 1/2 hiking boots, not even close. This is not such a big deal to me, as I won't be taking the legs on and off frequently. They might work fine with smaller low cut shoes. I would definitely recommend these pants to anyone despite this issue.

Best Zip-Off Pants!
December 11, 2010

I bought these for travel, and the occasional hike. These pants are awesome!!! I bought 1 size smaller than I thought, and they fit great. My waist is around 34", and I went with the medium. I have no doubt that they will last for years, and I'm going to pick up a couple more pair. The stretchy waist makes for a custom fit, and the belt is a great addition to the pants. I look forward to many years of use with these.

good versatile pants
September 08, 2011

I ordered these pants in a size 'small', option 'long' thinking that they might be just a smidge long given the information I gathered from the website regarding sizing. These pants were much too long. They were probably a 34" inseam. I was able to exchange them for an option 'regular' which should be 31" inseam (info received via live chat with sales person). I'm still waiting for this new, correct size so I can't speak about this size yet. The waist sizing was right on. The help I received from the live chat was great. The person on the other end helped me take care of the return number and helped make the purchase for the new pants, which was a big help. Regarding the design/quality of the pants, I really liked the construction and stitching, which seemed like it would hold up well. When the legs were zipped off the shorts seemed a little 'stiff' at the end of the shorts due to the zipper, but not so much that it was uncomfortable--just maybe a little less 'sylish'. Overall I think these pants will be perfect for my use, and I'm excited to get the new, correct size shipped to me.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, zipper pocket is a plus!, Cons: Cost, shorts might be a little stiff, cargo pockets a little small

When the picture taking is done the legs easily zip off and your ready for the beach. These are very comfortable in a wide range of climate conditions. Cool weather nights on the ocean or hot days in the Aruba desert, these pants are always comfortable and dry quickly if you happen to get caught in a tropical down pour.

First purchased a pair of these pants about 8 years ago, they lasted through 5 rugged climbing seasons in the Olympic Mountains then finally had to be replaced. Great all around pant.
October 22, 2010

I have had these pants for a couple months now, and find them to be super. The fit and construction is great. I have used the shorts everywhere. I have swam in them, they dried very fast. I have worn them in the rain, and the water would just bead up. Great outdoor short to have in your pack. I would own two pairs. I like the wide variety of pockets, as they allow you to carry many items. The only draw back is that the belt is fixed, so you can't swap it out for one of your own. Felt like the sizing was dead on, and the elastic allows for some size fluctuation.

Purchased for vacation!
July 11, 2011

I purchased these convertible pants for a vacation overseas because I wanted to pack light and needed both short and long pants during the trip. There are not a lot of manufacturers making pants that fit a short guy like me, but these came close. I'm a 29" inseam and I'm guessing these were about 30"-31". I also like North Face products. The pants were really comfortable and allowed for quick changes into and out of shorts. Quality seems good but I'll defer judgement until I've had them awhile. I had to buy the mediums because the small was too tight (I tried on for size at a traditional retailer) but the mediums are baggy (I'm a 32 waist). All in all, I'm happy with this purchase and the prompt shipment by Altrec!

Pros: Build quality, Performance

excellent pants but shrink a little after first wash
July 27, 2010

I've bought my first pair at a local Sports Authority store and liked them so much that I've recently ordered two more at Altrec. I've worn them during the hottest days in the last two weeks with temp's reaching 100 degrees and still felt quite comfortable as they are very light, don't absorb sweat, nor stick to skin. The only slight issue is their length shrunk a bit after first wash, probably should have used the drier at low temp setting.

Best zip offs I have ever found. Little pluses like color code zippers so you get right leg every time. These come in lengths that fit me! This is the second pair I have. I could get more sizes and colors here than anywhere else. Plus best price.

Pros: Ease of use

Most versatile pants!
February 12, 2010

These pants are light and very comfortable. With its new pocket design it is superior to its predecessor the paramount convertibles 2009. the built in buckle is a nice feature and looks very clean especially clean in asphalt grey. Switching to shorts is great but i prefer to wear them long even when it's warmer because it provides UV protection and they are so light you can barely tell the difference. These also go well as golf pants if you don't like the heavy feel of khakis on the course. the one thing that is tough about ordering these pants is the sizing. Altrec does a great job of clarifying the sizes but for these you have two measurements; the waist XS-->XXL and inseam Short-->Long. SHORT is roughly a 30" inseam, REG is 32" and LONG is 34". I bought the Small/Short version as my waist is 30". Altrec may have the best deal because they offer free shipping and no tax. If you try to buy these from The North Face or REI direct you have to order $100+ for free shipping and you have to pay state taxes.

North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pant
December 08, 2010

Bought this for its multi usage capability, very comfortable , not too baggy but i think anyone buying should buy 1 size smaller, my body sizing is XL but L fits me nicely, got to watch the inseam length, should have bought the short instead of regular version as regular for me is abit long, i'm 1.79m tall. Conversion to shorts comes handy when the weather gets hot. This is my 1st pair so not sure whether it will last very long but initial impression is the material should last for quite awhile Overall my skin love the feel of the fabric so pretty satisfied with this purchase.

Great pants
July 10, 2010

I gave this pants as a present to my husband. He loved them, the color, the material. It's a little sturdier than a previous North Face model he has. Sizing is a little bigger, but he likes them loose.

Good pants. Lightweight, but durable. The included belt is helpful as they run a little big in the waist. Dried quickly, even in humid Costa Rica, and in salt water

My favorite pants
April 06, 2010

I have 2 pairs of these pants now. They are hands down the best pants I own. They are fast drying if you manage to get them wet. Most of the time water just beads up and runs off of them. They quickly become shorts and then become pants again. The pockets are easy to access while sitting and they have a convenient zipper pocket that works well for a cell phone or other important items. I use these while canoeing, hiking, backpacking, and any other out door activity I do.

It is very nice pants. I like it very much.

Best Convertible Pants Purchase
April 14, 2013

The North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pants are Top Notch! Pretty awesome to wear while camping or on long hikes. Wear the shorts by day and then zip in your pants by night. Very durable pant and dry relatively quickly and lightweight. When I am not camping or hiking some rugged peaks I still wear my TNF Convertibles casually around town.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance

Great 3 season pants
June 01, 2010

These pants fit great! The shorts are a little longer than the previous version, which I think is a good improvement. I wore them in a light rain and they stayed dry!The fabric is a little heavier than I expected, but I was comfortable in near 90 degree temps. Great pants!

Great Hiking pants
August 12, 2011

I have bought several light weight hiking pants that were more cost effective but they were never quite what I wanted. These North Face pants are. The pockets are laid out right and the security pocket is a nice added feature. Dual Velcro on the side pockets help keep the flap closed at all times. They are a little heavy but they do breathe well. The colored zippers are a plus. They do run a little large but the extra room when climbing and the belt make it not much of a concern. My next pants will be another pair Paramount Peak.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance

Best Zip-Off Pants!
December 11, 2010

I bought these for travel, and the occasional hike. These pants are awesome!!! I bought 1 size smaller than I thought, and they fit great. My waist is around 34", and I went with the medium. I have no doubt that they will last for years, and I'm going to pick up a couple more pair. The stretchy waist makes for a custom fit, and the belt is a great addition to the pants. I look forward to many years of use with these.

Also Great in Cold Weather
February 04, 2011

I purchased the pants with the expectation of using them in the summer. After purchasing them I had a chance to use them for a ski trip. The weather was such that I didn't want to wear my real cold weather ski pants. I wore the pants with a light set of thermals under it. i was amazed at how comfortable I was. In the afternoon the weather changed and it started snowing. The pants did not collect a great deal of snow on them and I stayed much dryer that I thought I would. It is very nice to have an alternative now over the normal bulky ski pants. I really like the product and feel good about my purchase. Very fast delivery and fit as expected.

June 29, 2011

I have an older pair of Paramount Peak Convertible Pants and found them to be comfortable and versatile, so I went for another pair. Good for casual wear as well as outdoors wear. I tend to run warm so I get good year round use from these. The fit is good and allows for full range of motion in all dimensions. I'm 6'1 and 205 lbs and the large is a nice fit. Plenty of pockets and zippers for gadget storage.

October 08, 2012

I am 6' and 170 lbs and bought the Northface Paramount Peak Convertible Pants, tan, medium size/regular. The pants are very confortable, has good fit, and looks great. There are plenty of pockets that are very useful. The only minor complaint is that the hand pockets are slightly smaller than older version of the same pants. The pants appear to be very durable and should last a long time. I would definitely buy these pants again.

Perfect Traveling Pants
December 03, 2010

Got these for a recent backpacking/horse riding/relaxing trip. They are great, have tons of pockets and the fabric does not have a chintzy nylon feel. From afar they look just like khakis - which is nice if you are not always on the trail. Also they dry fast.

I bought this as a birthday present for my husband. He's medium built 5'7" tall and Medium-Short fits him well. I got an asphalt grey color for him. He's been using it for almost any activity. He likes to wear it specially when we travel. No need to bring separate shorts and pants anymore.

Comfortable Convertible Pants
April 26, 2010

I bought these after looking into and trying on at least six alternative convertible pants. I noticed a significant difference between fit of the various convertible pants. As I looked at pants I concluded that fit was important to me. These pants fit comfortably at the natural waist and had enough room in the legs so that the convertible zippers would not rub against the thighs when hiking. I also liked that they were quick dry and had some water repellancy, that they had a number of useful pockets, that the shorts were a slightly longer length, and that they had a built in belt. These pants are a little bit heavier material than some other convertible pants such as TNF Horizon's. It did occur to me that in the heat of the summer they might be a bit warmer than the lighter weight pants. However, I like to hike at high altitudes here in Colorado and even in the warmest part of the summer it can get cool in the mountains. They look like they are well made. I am sure I will get a lot of use out of them.
