Fantastic Jacket
Wow- what a great jacket! It is so light you can't believe it will be very warm, but it is. Put a fleece layer underneath and you are ready for all sorts of cold weather. It looks and feels great. I am very impressed with this jacket and recommend it highly.

The perfect backpacking jacket?
I bought two of these jackets from Altrec...one for backpacking/kayaking and one for urban/mall wear. I used it for a Wind River/Wyoming early summer trec.and an early season, week long Voyageurs NP kayak trip in wet/windy weather. Stuffs very compact into it's own pocket...extremely light weight...is water proof (tested in downpours)...fits big enough to layer under if the layer is not too bulky since it is overall somewhat of an athletic fit. I usually wear a large and ended up with 2 mediums since the cuffs allowed the sleeves to slip onto my hands too far. I love the tighter fit the mediums allow but maybe most would like the "average/normal" fit which you get by ordering your actual true size. I tried many many jackets and with the weight/fit/compact stuff size not to mention being extremely attractive (tons of compliments) I had to order another one...it was that great!!

warm, light, durable
I've worn this as my daily jacket in the Pacific Northwest either as a stand-a-lone jacket about town, or mid layer for skiing and windier/wetter days. The hood is key, as it keeps you significantly warmer than if you didn't have it. Dries quickly if it gets wet, and fits me perfectly in a large, despite being tall (6 foot 1) and skinny.

great jacket
Just got this jacket and I love it, great warmth to weight ratio, wore it tonight in 20 degree weather and felt fine. The fleece lined collar is a nice touch and I like how the hood adjusts (it would be nice if it could roll up). Fit was about average, I am 6'2" 210lbs and the XL fit fine. Great alternative to a fleece.

Great lightweight jacket
Great jacket. i am a business traveler and needed a thin, lightweight jacket that looks professional and still manages to keep me warm even through the winters of the great lakes and new england. I was pleasantly surprised just how warm this jacket really is! The fill is very light and compactible and the jacket takes up minimal space in my carry on. Be aware that it is not completely waterproof so I bring a hard shell when in the pacific nw. It does seem to repel water quite well in light rain however.

Very light jacket.
I don't like heavy stuff as I get hot very easily. This jacket is superb. I hardly know I'm wearing it yet it's very warm when standing there in the cold. With an outer shell on top you have a complete winter solution.

Great Jacket
This jacket is light, warm and very comfortable. Highly recommended for not only alpine pursuits but for wearing around town. The zipper is hard to start but that is the trade off for being able to unzip from the bottom when using a harness.

Perfect cold weather activity coat
Excellent coat! Great coat for active People. It is very light, not bulky and very warm. I went to the Green Bay Packers' playoff game with 0 degrees and -15 windchill. I used this coat with a shell on over it. I stayed very warm. Highly recommend.

Very Warm and Lightweight Jacket
You may not be able to tell from the picture, but the jacket is unbelievably light. The Primaloft material makes it about half as heavy as my already light North Face Denali jacket, but don't let that fool you; the jacket is quite warm and rivals my goose down jacket. This makes it extremely easy to move around in- a perfect candidate for winter sports. Also, it completely repels water to the point that I'm not sure that I can even wash it. Overall, a great jacket and well worth the money!

Warm and light
This jacket is great. It insulates very well and keeps out the moisture/rain. One thing I regret is not getting this jacket back in November/December when it was freezing here in Seattle. Another great North face jacket and great service from Altrec.

This thing is perfect for just about anyone
I've gotten a lot of compliments on this slim, but surprisingly warm jacket. It sheds a lot of the bulk but retains its ability to be used around the town during winter. In sub-20 degrees you might have to layer underneath, as I do. On 95% of winter days, however, it's perfect. I use this jacket from October to March in Michigan. Very versatile and especially fashionable. The hood is also the best hood I've ever seen on a jacket.

perfect all around jacket for climbing, backcountry skiing...
i bought this jacket the day i returned from a trip into the teton backcountry. i skied backcountry lines for a week in -20 degree weather and needed this jacket!! it is perfect after a sweat slog on skis or a stairmaster bootpack up a peak - just at the moment you cool off and the wind drops your body temp with a swift hand. the hood provides great warmth and wind protection and fits over a helmet. one napoleon pocket on the breast and two handwarmers on the stomach. this piece will be very handy in the pacific northwest as it insulates when wet and is very durable. the jacket will accompany me on all backcountry ski trips moving forward and will be a great warmth piece when belaying in the early and late climbing seasons. hell, i will use it after paddle trips on washingtons very cold rivers. use this puppy freely and often.... it will last.

great jacket for the wet and cold oregon weather
very light and thin, yet surprisingly warm. Warm enough combined with only a t-shirt in 30degree weather. CON: the main zipper is hard to zip most of the time. kind of a pain

Perfect Winter Coat
When I first got the coat, I didn't think it would be very warm since it was so light. However, it is VERY warm. I am amazed at how something so thin can keep me so warm in freezing weather. This is my first TNF jacket, and the material and craftsmanship is great. I love it.

Light, thin and very warm.
Living in Minnesota, this is definitely the jacket to get. It has kept me warm in the coldest of conditions which is saying alot up here. The only problem i could forsee is that it may keep me too warm in the warmer months. I've had to take off the jacket a few time this winter because I had gotten hot.

Great jacket!
The Redpoint Optimus jacket is further proof that synthetic fill is far superior to down fill. I also own a Patagonia synth filled winter jacket and the North Face is every bit as warm and well-constructed, but the Redpoint is a little better looking. It stays warm when wet and doesn't lose it's loftiness, unlike down. Also, it's so much easier to clean than down: You can throw it in the machine and dryer. I just wore my Redpoint in single digit weather in Manhattan and it kept me cozy and comfortable. 5 Stars!

Water and windproof, warm and worth every dollar spent
Living on the east coast we've had our share of snow, rain and cold in the last couple weeks. I wore this jacket right out of the box, over a t-shirt and thermal longsleeve and headed out. The jacket is incredibly light, and the insulation is superb. I was breaking into a sweat with a normal walking pace. The hood closes up along the neck, and is snug around the head - kept water, ice, and snow out. Water beaded off the hood, shoulders, sleeves. After three days of use, and brushing some dirt off the elbows, the jacket looked like it did when I first put it on. Quality you expect from North Face, with superb performance.

if you like the insulation without the overpoofing you get with other down jackets, this is the jacket for you. it's a great jacket for chilly days and can also be used as an inner layer on very cold days.

Very light and very warm
The first thing you'll notice about the Redpoint Optimus is how incredibly light it is. It's also very warm and the pockets are usable/useful unlike those in other jackets that are in ergonomically strange places that either make your profile look funny or hard to access. Also stuffs very well into its sewn in stuff-pocket for compact packing. Layers well too. Highly recommended.

Great All-Around Jacket for 3 seasons
I was looking for a nice warm jacket that I could wear during cold winter months here in the Northeast. Something to take out on hikes as well as wear to work and look good. This jacket fills those criteria and more. Very light and packs down small to fit in a pack and also fits nicely under a shell if the rain/snow gets really intense. If it's a mild snow or rain storm this jacket repels it well. The hood is ideal for wearing over a baseball type cap that I wear to keep the rain off my glasses. It's probably designed to fit over a helmet and looks a bit strange if you wear the hood over your head with nothing else but it is more than funtional if not a bit thin compared to the rest of the jacket. It's a snug, altheltic fit and probably runs small for North Face gear as I am a small guy and this fits great - a rarity for TNF gear which usually runs too large for me. It also has a good combination of pockets with a napoleon chest pocket on the outside, which works great when worn under a shell and a very deep internal pocket that can hold a medium sized water bottle or a some large gloves. Highly recommended.

Really warm and light
This is my second Redpoint Optimus Jacket. Super warm, a bit puffier than the 2002/2003 version. Great winter coat for around town, wet or dry. Note that the Burl/Orange is a brown/orange combo, not gray/orange. I just got mine and it looks like a Cleveland Browns jacket.

Redpoint Comparison
The 2003 ($99) model of the Redpoint Optimus Jacket is a very good jacket with it's included features. Removable sleeves, sleeve pocket, hood cinch, and primaloft insulation. The 2005 version of the same jacket is ($199) and has less features than the 2003 model. The 2005 version is without the above 2003 features listed above at twice the cost. The only features that are better on the 2005 model are that the primaloft feels like down, and the "kiss" of hyvent to protect the wearer from water absorption. If I has a choice I would choose the 2003 version of this jacket.
