Great for extreme endurance racing and trail running, The North Face Ultra 103 XCR offers the same sort of waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® XCR® found in other running shoes, but this shoe has a little more open-cell sandwich mesh material along the upper for potentially better vapor transfer on long runs. For years running shoe manufacturers have mastered the art of waterproofing their trail running shoes, but the real trick is finding a way to keep vapor transfer going as a runner's foot heats up. Even with a waterproof membrane, trail running shoes that offer wide mesh panels often sacrifice essential support for navigating challenging trail terrain. The North Face Ultra 103 XCR features an extensive pattern of side and top open-cell sandwich mesh reinforced with synthetic leather and a special molded TPU lateral medial support system, so you experience an effective balance between essential support and better breathable vapor transfer. Other support refinements include X-2™ air cushioning in the heel and fore foot, and a Extended Roll Control™ medial heel wedge. The North Face Ultra 103 XCR is a great shoe for training on trails and it's still light enough for ultra-distance endurance racing in almost any weather.

I have been using the same shoe/runner/hiker/ for over a year. I used them as a daily use and on all my hikes. The light weight and durability of them are outstanding. Considering the abuse I have put them through, Mt. Fuji, Bear Mountian, 7 lakes {just a long walk really}, Culvers Gap NJ, to past the bake oven Knob Lean to in PA. The only wear to speak of is a slight detachment of the nose guard from the shoe in one lil spot and a separation of rubber tread from the sole on the third tred down. This has happend with all 2 pairs, considering I use them for daily use as well and day/weekend hikes at least 2 weekends a month. I couldnt ask for anything more. I had to have anohter pair!! Not to mention if you have any issues with athelete's foot, the antimicrob layer ROCKS! Since I have worn these I have not had any occurence.

Purchased these a couple of weeks ago, and have done three short hikes. I live in the mountains of SW Va and regularly hike the AT. These shoes are perfect for the rocky trails that I hike. They are featherweight, sturdy, and provide a great grip on rocky terrain. Once again TNF has produced a winner. Altrec is simply the best online store there is for outdoor gear!

On my third pair, each lasted about 300-350 miles on a combination of trail/road running. Removed the OEM insole and replaced with Sole ultra heat moldable one. I tend to be an "under pronater" and have tried many different brands (Nike, New Balance, Asics) of trail shoes, these are by far the best. Have run 26.2 and 50 mile races in these and they hold up well, have not spent anytime in them during normal walking around however, only wore them for running/racing. Heel support and hardened toe box are critical for extreme terrain trails, wide toe box works better than any other shoe I have tried during downhill running (toes do not get crushed). Bottom of shoe maintains it's grip in most every kind of terrain, when new (< 10 miles old) they are a little slippery on wet asphalt and concrete, but after 10-15 miles, the slick bottom goes away. Break in is a cinch, ran a 13.1 mile race with a brand new pair without a single blister. Buy them!

I liked this shoe so much I bought another pair. I used these on a Boy Scout campout in New Mexico and hiked almost a hundred miles in them. With the gaitors, I also use them as snow shoes.

I have been looking for the right Gore-Tex trail shoe for some time and I kept coming back to the Ultra 103 XCR. It is the perfect marriage of function, durability and style! I would highly recommend these shoes to anyone looking for a waterproof, lightweight trail running shoe. Of course Altrec had the best deal and great customer services, so the rest is history.

I've been wearing them about a week and a half and I love them. My wife has a pair too, but she tells me they're too stiff to run in. They are true to size, have good support, and have stayed completely dry. Altrec customer support was very helpful when ordering, fast shipping.
Garrett - 2007-01-21Great Shoe, lots of traction and support
So far so good. The aggressive sole is great. Be prepared for high support around the ankle. This is great for trails, but something different than your normal road shoes. This shoe also has a huge toebox, which is great for someone that has a wide foot. This does feel like a motion control shoe as when you are standing on flat ground your feet cant in it. Doesn't bother me and is fine while running, but as a neutral runner I found it as a suprise.

The shoes were extremly rigid around the heel. They fit nothing like the GORE-TEX sister shoe of the same size. They broke in faster then any trail shoe I have ever used. Great shoe, however in the future, I would only buy the GORE-TEX XCR.

Great shoes. Good support for my wide foot. I have had several other trail runners from other manufacturers and have always come back to North Face. Longer lasting, better support for my feet.

These shoes are FANTASTIC!! They are very comfortable, yet very supportive. This is my first pair of NF trail running shoes, but it won't be my last. Do yourself a favor and get a pair - you won't be sorry. Maybe a little wider than you'd expect, but that gives more "wiggle" room, especially in the toe box.
There is absolutely nothing that I don't like about this shoe.

I bought these shoes without even trying them which I wouldn't normally do. But they were good-looking shoes, and I know North Face has built a good reputation. This shoes are great. I work in a very wet environment and my feet stay dry with them. And the comfort of the insole is amazing. Very supportive.

I was looking for a shoe that would be good for trail running, but also double as a hiking shoe on day hikes and I definitely found it w/ these North Face's. These shoes are more sturdy and have better traction than my year-old hiking boots. They're also great for walking around town. Another added bonus is that they break in almost instantly.

Excellent support on rugged terrain runs, and comfortable enough to wear around each day. A little stiff at the top of the tongue, but once you start running or walking you no longer notice it.

They are great shoes and i like them very much but they are cut a little high on the ankle and have rubbed on my ankle bone. I have corrected it with a heel cup so far. I believe they will be better when they break in more.

Pressure spot under sole of left foot occurs periodically, breatheability is an issue. Had neither of these on my pair I bought last year and replaced due to so much usage.

this stylish colored running shoe was the perfect gift i received recently...it feels light on the foot with a great support down the middle and the durable laces do not come undone, which it really important for me when wearing the shoe at the gym...i rated it not a perfect 5 because of instances where i have lost traction on wet sidewalks

I took these on a trail run for three consecutive days up in the White Mountains of NH. They held up really well and are very stable. You can feel the roll control in the ankle area. The only thing I had issue with was on wet rock surfaces with algae. The 103's slipped a bit but nothing to worry about. Overall, great shoe from TNF

Just got these as a warrenty replacement for my older Ultra xcr's that I had returned because of an annoying squeak they developed but otherwise a great shoe. These 103's feel like they are sturdier than my Ultra's and may have more overall support, still may be a bit heavy for trail running, but perfer these shoes for light off trail hiking, camping and general use where conditions are less than ideal where you don't want a heavy boot or a running shoe. This is a very versatile shoe and thumbs up to their warrenty dept. as well, fast and straight forward, no complaints.

I have a pair of these, as well as original Ultra XCR's, and I prefer the older model. The soles of the Ultra 103 XCR's are a bit stiff and clunky - more like a hiking boot than a trail runner.

I wear these shoes at work and have noticed that the soles come off rather easy when walking in wet conditions. Although they are very comfortable, they never last to their warranty. I have had replaced several of these shoes with various other shoe stores. North Face is good about their warranty, however, the shoe does not hold up to wet conditions as advertised......I guarantee it....

I wore these trail runners for a break-in period before they hit the Trail and the tread started to separate from the sole after 2 months of medium use. I had to put inserts in for padding, something I've never had to do. I can't imagine what the Trail would have done. Altrec took care of me of course, but I won't be using TNF shoes until I see quality assurance improvement.

Found these North Face Ultra's to be very stiff & uncomfortable. Even after wearing them most of the day they continued to not be comfortable & also rubbed on the heel bone.

I've been through 2 pairs of these. The first pair never even made it to the trail before the tread started separating. My replacement pair lasted a little longer before the tread started separating again. I received a refund and bought a pair of Salomons. They are a very comfortable shoe though.
