Optimized for running on cold, slick winter trails, The North Face Ultra GORE-TEX® XCR™ is a shoe that holds its own under skies of all colors. Each shoe weighs in at around 14 ounces and features a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® XCR™ membrane that eliminates water penetration while allowing vapor transfer. While other cold weather trail running shoes may offer some sort of waterproof membrane, The North Face Ultra GORE-TEX® XCR™ dishes out a long list of features without piling on excessive ounces, a formula that won an Editor's Choice award in Trail Runner magazine. Both the heel and forefoot areas have The North Face X-2™ cushioning for enhanced protection and energy absorption both up and down the switchbacks. great shoes. however, i do agree with the review posted on 2005-09-27. these are not the best for high mileage. 3-4 miles is fine- after that my feet were sore. great shoes for small distances and perfect for hiking- much lighter than boots. asics gel nimbus are the shoes i wear for running

I have them over month and Iam very satisfied.Shipping was a little expensive(to Netherlands...),and I was afraid of sizing,but I depend on English sizing and fits very well!As somebody says,they are not really for running,but for hiking(except winter of course)and mountinebiking are very good,sole fits very good on bike pedals.Good shoes!

personally i thought these were great and not overly expensive being english these bad boys would cost you alot more in the uk. i did try them on first in a store .i have fussy feet and theyre fine . i guess everyones feet are different so try before you buy .but i like them hope this helps

So far this has been my best trail runner by far. Ordered 1/2 size up from my usual Nike shoes and the fit is perfect. Order them with the gaters.....Excellent.

I'm a size 12 and got a 13,feels a little big but,thick socks and I'll be ok.12.5 would have been perfect but,they don't make that size in this shoe? I recommend starting with 12 and then if needed move up a size.For other sizes a half size up from where your at now should be perfect.I'm in Iraq right now putting them to the test.I wish all shoes came with this lacing system,it cradles your foot,very comfortable.The Gore-tex leaves your feet warm and dry through mud and cold rain.On nice days your feet stay cool.The sole rolls over rocks with ease.I also got the gaiters for this shoe,definitely a plus.

I have used everything from Nike to New Balance. But, I have to say these shoes have redefined my idea of a really good all purpose shoe. The arch support and sole are outstanding. This shoe has saved my career in running in that I had to stop about 7 years ago because I crushed my right heel. Currently I have a plate and screws in that same heel and it has been near impossible to run because of my injury. However, with this shoe, I have now been running for about 1 month and have no discompfort at all. I am up to 5 miles. I am truly pleased. I would recommend this shoe to anyone who has arthritic problems in there feet or ankles. It will amaze you as it has me.

Purchased for a trip this summer to Hawaii as an all-around travel/walking/hiking shoe. I wanted to minimize the amount of stuff I was bringing without compromising comfort or safety. In limited use I have found it to be accommodating to my wide feet, relatively lightweight, comfortable and somewhat fashionable. I will write another review once the shoes are tested in the intended settings and terrain.

I purchased these shoes and they were a great fit the first time I put them on. They do run small, so I had to get a larger size then usual. I'm a college student and they work great walking on campus on snowy days. I'm looking forward to taking them hiking this summer because during the trekking that I've been able to do during these winter months in MI, they've worked out great. Awesome pair of shoes!

From reading the reviews, I also ordered 1/2 size bigger. Its perfect. I wear med/thick cotton & wool athletic socks and I still have room so my toes can flex. I teach math to 7 & 8th graders. Been on my feet all day, took a brisk 15min stroll @ lucnh in 10degree weather. Felt nothing. Not even a chill @ the toe box. This weekend we're expecting 10 to 12 in. of snow here in NY. With a pair of tnf goertx gaiters im gonna really test these babies! I highly recommend these. This is commin from a 5'11 214lbs b-ball play'n,trail hiking,& soon to snow trail-bike riding brother!

These are actually my son's shoes and being the outdoorsman that he is he loves the comfort and durability. He has had a lot of shoes in his lifetime and this is his first North Face and he says he will never wear anything else!!!!!!!

These are by far the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Like the description says, they are not too warm, and not too cold. The unique lace system and waterproofed tongue design are perfect for trails and light snow conditions. The tread could not grip anymore! A+

These are very comfortable shoes for my hiking/ light backpacking needs. Very stable sole. I wear a 10 1/2 in a nike and a size 11 in these fit great.

I have just started running with these. They are very comfortable shoes. They are also great for keeping your feet dry in wet/muddy conditions. I would not hesitate to buy them again or to reccomend them. Altrec.com did a great job, as usual, of offering the best price and quick shipping.

The north face isn't known for its footwear as they are their parkas or sleeping bags but this shoe is great. I like the fit, they are very comfortable. The toe box is roomy, and the lacing system evenly distributes tightness so there are no pinch points. I have read other reviews which say to buy 1 size larger since this show runs small. I have a 11 1/2 size shoe and purchased a 12 and they are perfect so buy 1/2 size larger, not full size and you should be happy. Once again, top notch shoe, I am extremely happy with this purchase
morrison - 2007-05-19these shoes can do it all
my first pair of northface shoes with gore tex and i love em. i especially like the wider laces on this model versus the '07 model. i've had these for about a month over which time i've seen these shoes go from running to hiking to biking to being my number one outdoor shoe for whatever sport. as far as sizing goes, i only bought a half size larger than i usually wear, so initially they felt a bit snug however now that i've worn them in a little they feel great, glad i didnt go with a full size larger.

Got these at 60% off here at altrec.com, great customer service, highly recommend online store. The shoes are very light weight but not as stylish as my Northface Ultra 103 XCR. Compared to the Ultra 103 XCR, the Ultra XCR is 0.6 oz lighter, fits about 1/2 size smaller than the actual size and little narrower. I have not run too much with it yet but seems to be as sturdy as the 103 XCR when walking with them.

They are awesome shoes, but on the inside tounge theres a lip that moves a vein around in my foot, and it outs way too much pressure on the top part of my foot, I have tried every way of tieing them, but still m akes my feet very uncomfortable, what should I do??? USSFC@hotmail.com

Overall I'm happy with the performance of this trail shoe. From reading previous reviews I'd agree that it's a little thin in the toe, which actually does help to feel the trail when running uphill. Have run through mud and water and feet stayed dry. I ordered my appropriate size and it fits fine. Ultimately, I'd buy the shoe again.

I ordered a half-size larger than I usually would after reading user's comments, but I should have ordered true-to-size for normal wear. They should fit fine with extra thick socks on the cold days, though. I like the lacing system, and there is ample support and cushion. I'm happy with these shoes, and I would buy them again.

these shoes have worked well over the year, but not for trail running or ultras. they neither fit not feel like true running shoes. but i have really liked having them for light hikes, mountain biking, and other times when it's nice to have goretex on your feet.

I bought them about one month ago and I started running with it on the same day. I run every day for about 1h. I didn´t have any blisters or sore feet. They are light and they look great! They tend to warm up a bit. The mud doesn´t stick. Buy a half size bigger. Great overall adventure racing shoes! I´m happy! :)

I wear a size 11 and orded a 11 1/2 shoe. These were a little snug and it seemed as though the liner was too large for the shoe causing an unconmortable ripple. I returned them for a size 12 and they fit great with the liner fitting without a ripple. You should definetely go with one whole size larger for a better fit leaving you with an option to wear a thicker sock on colder days. I only give them 4 stars because I have only had them for 3 weeks and I need to give them the test of time for durability. Great shoe so far.

I recently purchased these shoes on line, at a discounted price compared to most retail stores (i.e. REI -- $85 compared to $110), so it was a bargain. However, if I paid the full price of $110, I would be sorely disappointed. There is nothing super special about these shoes. I get the same traction from my Adidas trail running shoes, but the Northface provide a little more stability. I like that the tongue is a part of the shoe, not separate (tends to slide to one side on me). As far as the goretex XCR gig, I have gotten my feet wet when walking in lower than ankle high snow (and I wasn't tromping through it either). I have fallen arches anyway, so I won't go into arch support (none) with this shoe. I will admit that I haven't run a trail race in these just yet, so maybe I'll alter my review when I do, if they do something special, that is.

The shoe feels great when I run in them very stable and gets good traction in loose dirt, mud and snow. There is enough room to fit a pair of smart wool socks in them. I only have two complaints as they run 1/2 size small and some of the stiching is coming out. It is the 2nd pair of The North Face shoes I own, the first pair run 1/2 size small but they have been great shoes.

I'm 6 ft 190 lbs just so ya know how to judge this review
I just dont get it!!! Were is the fore foot cushining in these shoes??? Actually were the heck is the fore foot cushin in most trail running shoes? I can understand wanting less cushining for scrambling up boulders and technical approaches because you want more feel in the shoe so you know whats going on down there. But not in a running shoe dudes! I couldnt imagine running more than 3 miles in these. They do fit my narrow foot well and seem to be more than stable enough, but the lack of cushin nullifies the good. I here all this crap about people wanting want more feel for the trail, well 15 miles into a run and I dont think you feet will agree with you. Ok, if your small and light and doing short runs and nature hikes not over a few of miles then these shoe's are SUPER DUPER!. I have always gone back to nike for my running shoes. I like the Air Max Assail for most of my training. They have good cushin in the fore foot and heel, and they feel good on the pavement after many miles! The other Nike trail runnin shoes Ive had suck! They have suffered the same problem as the Ultras.
I really hope someday trail running shoe's can actually be worn for running, What a concept!!!!!!!!!!!!!
