Great stuff for extreme cold, The North Face Nuptse Mitt is packed with warm, 600-fill down insulation for some of the best warmth-to-weight ratios you'll find for mountaineering mitts. While the design is articulated, there's only so much dexterity mitts can offer, so if you're looking at mitts instead of gloves, we're assuming that your priority is finger warmth--which the Nuptse delivers on all counts. The exterior waterproof and breathable HyVent shell has water-resistant goatskin leather along the palm and key abrasion areas to help keep you covered even after several seasons of gripping unyielding shards of ice and rock.

Perfect companion mitt for TNF Nuptse jacket (you won't notice the 700- vs. 600-down fill disparity at all). Superb warmth/insulation/wind resistance. I use it for daily commuting in the Mid-Atlantic (perhaps a little overkill) and never (and I'm sensitive to the cold) have my hands been even moderately cold. I'd never valued warm mitts until I got these--they'll regulate your entire body temperature and your hands will be sweating after a few blocks. A little pricey, but well worth the investment. Minor criticism: because of their relative bulk, it's hard to grip or carry items...but it's to be expected; they are mitts afterall. Runs true to size.
Excellant Service !!
Product arrived quickly and just what I ordered.
Any questions that I had prior ro oredering were answered promptly.
Shipping to Canada was painless.
Down is still KING
As a consulting forester, I truly must have outdoor clothing that works...all day, every day. Accordingly, I insist on down mitts for truly cold (< 10F) weather. I've tried them all (been in the woods for 31 years), and laugh when folks tell me of synthetic insulations. Other than a pair of sheep skin flight mitts, there are no peers for down mitts.
The Nuptse mitts are the best down mitts I have found in many years of looking. That is not to state they are as good as down mitts I have owned in the past, but they are well made and contain a reasonable amount of 600 cubic inch/oz. down. The palms are high quality leather...time will tell as to how long those palms hold up. Wearing the backside out on mitts is not an issue with me, and it appears will especially not be an issue with the Nuptses.
A previous reviewer commented that these mitts tend to run small. I agree. Consider ordering one size up.
All in all, if you truly need warm mitts, the Nuptses are a best choice, and represent an excellent value.

So far so good
I haven't taken these out to extreme sub zero temps yet, but these Nuptse mitts have kept my fingers warm into the low 30's. I wore an additional Gore-tex shell over these (the accompanying TNF product tag states "water-reistent" & not waterproof--I wouldn't want to risk getting down wet as it loses its insulting ability so would recommend a waterproof shell regardless in rain/snow). The sizing is definitely smaller & narrower for unisex--I'm usually XS if unisex, but was glad Altrec only had S b/c they fit perfectly snug. (My palm to finger lenth =6.25"..I sometimes even order kid's L/XL b/c they fit me better than adult sizes, but these were perfect). I had much better dexterity in them than I expected--they're not as lofty like its puffy marshmallow jacket counterpart! Will write another review once I test its warmth in colder conditions...
These mittens do not keep my hands warm!
I ski 3 to 4 times a week in sub zero temps and my hands are freezing whenever I wear these mittens! Adding hand warmers helps, but my thumbs still freeze unless I release them from the thumb and put them directly onto the warmer. Additionally, whenever I remove my hands from the mittens, my nails, cuticles and fingers are black! I washed the mittens as per instructions as recommended when calling The North Face customer Service, but the "black hands" problem has not been rectified. Too bad, for the gloves do have nice features: good fit, sturdy, easy to use cinches to keep them together or attached to your jacket when not wearing, easy to use wrist straps etc. However, I am returning them since I do not want cold hands that look like I have been digging in the dirt for a lifetime! :)
