I just purchased my skareb 40 backpack recently and i haven't use it yet.my next trip will be on november and i will out of country for almost a month and i am excited already to use my new backpack. hopefuly when i get back from my trip i will write a review about my new skareb 40 backpack. thank you!
Good pack
Pack is good, very light weight and versatile. It works perfect for a super light setup!!
Fits very large.
I didn't get much experience from the pack because I returned it shortly after trying it on. In most brands I'm a size Large (22" spine) but the Skareb fit very large, and I'd need a Medium. The construction was alright. The bungie cords need to be played with for the pack to open fully.

Definitely lightweight
I purchased the Skareb 40 for my first backpacking trip. I am 5'2" and 120 lbs. I was looking for a lightweight pack being concerned about the weight I had to pack in and out. The Skareb 40 (size small) was the most lightweight pack I tried on. It adjusted well to my body and was very comfortable for our hike averaging 10 miles/day. However, I would only recommend this pack for a 3 day hike. I was able to stuff a sleeping bag, 2 days clothes, food for 4 days, personal items, water filter system, pot, first aid kit, and flashlight. All said the pack weighed 22lbs. The front large mesh pocket was great for carrying our camelbak (90oz). The top accessory pouch is convenient for readily needed items, so you don't have to go digging through your pack. I agree with the first reviewer who wrote that the zippers on the left and right side pockets were a little hard to unzip. I ditched the plastic back panel. I thought it would be unnecessary weight and I did not miss it. Initially, I thought the roll-top closure would be a problem, but my pack was bulging at the top and the roll-top closed securely after tighting the side straps - no problem. I paid $150 at Sport Chalet in Sept 2006.
Expected more from a NF product.
Some great features, but some poor designs that I think NF could have done better. Nice lightweight comfortable wearing pack. Hip belt and shoulder straps are easy to adjust and distributes weight well for a comfortable ride. I found the zippers on the accessory pouches a bit annoying. They do not open or close easily and bind frequently. Good attempt to make a zipper more water resistant, but not the greatest execution. What made me return the pack was the poorly designed top closure. NF could have done much better than a fold/roll down system. Not the greatest for keeping gear dry in a passing summer shower that you may not want to take the time to don the included rain cover. Possibly why NF decided to add the cover in the first place. Overall, nice lightweight comfortable pack but fell short in the small details that makes or breaks a great piece of gear. For nearly $150, it could be better.
Poor pack I expected more
A very poor backpack I had expected more in a pack from The North Face. I did not like the roll down closure system on the pack I was expecting something different. I only used the bag on two different day trips after the second trip the stitching on the top where the shoulder straps and the roll down top started to rip. I give big credit to Altrec on their return policy. I was able to return the pack with no questions asked. Thank you Altrec for your great customer service. You get a 5. North Face gets a 1.
