The North Face Solo 12 Tent(OLD)

All in all a great tent
Love it! Can't beat the light weight..the only draw back was condensation. Fit comfortably and had plenty of space for Border Collie and gear. Used it one night in warm mountain weather with no wind to speak of. Venting was good, sleeping bag and I remained dry but dog was fairly wet. No problem keeping warm when night temperature cooled. Overall it feels sturdy, looks great, and is quick and easy to set up. Recommend it, especially for those with a smaller build, and ladies you'll love the light weight.

Fast & light
Used one night in calm sea level condition and as emergency shelter in Cairgorm rain and wind showers so far only. Love the simplicity and speed to erect of this 'cutting edge' bit of kit from TNF. Small and light enough to replace my plastic bivvy bag for emergency use when climbing and sea kayaking but good to know you have a proper 'home' when needed. Seemed strong in Cairgorm winds despite lack of any guys though will flex in cross winds. Actually housed myself, my wife and daughter for lunch under cover during rain storm..not bad for a 1 man shelter! Venting seems quite good without the direct 'breeziness' internally of say the Mtn Hardwear PCT1. This should mean you don't need to carry a warmer sleeping bag to counteract the cold internally thereby wiping out the weight saving. Condensation still considerable after 1 night in still warm conditions with no thru breeze to vent tent, however I, my bag and sleeping mat stayed dry so no real problem. However if you were using it on multi night trip you'd need a pack towel to dry off the inner for next night use to be comfortable. All in all handy and technical piece of kit I look forwward to testing in more mountainous situations.

Good, but....
You can't beat the 2lb weight and its compactness for this Solo 12. The 3 vent system is definately a plus as well. However, because of such convenience, there are drawbacks. For a medium built guy like myself (5 feet 10 inches), I find it just a tad difficult to manuever inside the tent. The tent is designed so that you can only manuever around sitting up in one position. The space isn't much, especially if you have a medium sized duffle inside the tent. Despite the limited square footage, I do have to comment on the sturdiness of the tent. I recently used it for a week in desert environments where temperatures drop to freezing and wind gusts reaching 30mph. Other than one slightly bent stake, this tent kept me nicely sheltered. I definately reconmend this tent for the light packers under 6 feet tall whom don't mind the limited space.
