It probably depends on your backpacking trio, but most of us share the packload when it comes to splitting up the food supply, stove fuel and tent. If you're drawing straws, the loser often ends up hauling the tent--but that won't be the case with this lightweight and spacious Spectrum 33 tent from The North Face. It's a freestanding, single-walled wonder that weighs less than five pounds (actually, it's closer to four pounds when you trim everything down to trail weight) and resists windy gusts better than any minimalist tent design in this weight category. Because three adults in a single-walled tent can generate some heat, the Spectrum 33 features The North Face's new Nano-Knuckle Swivels, two durable plastic swivels positioned on the top cross pole to improve venting on at the top of the 42-in. high ceiling. These swivels improve the ceiling venting far better than other similar designs from The North Face. Unzip the perimeter vents down along the edges of the Spectrum 33 and you have plenty of airflow. There's also a pull-out vestibule that keeps a trio of packs, boots and other gear out of the rain. Because of the low weight profile, the Spectrum 33 is also an ideal choice for backpacking pairs who want a little more space to stretch out at the end of the day. It's also a perfect choice for a trail-bound family of three.
