Perfect Travel Pant
These pants are perfect travel pants, and the fit is great. My hips are a 1/2 size bigger than my waist, so the built-in draw string takes up the slack without bunching. The cut is flattering and up-to-date -- just below the waist, roomy, though not baggy, through the hips and thighs. Being convertible, you can wear these pants long, capri, or shorts length. They take up little space and you can wash them out in a hotel sink and hang them to dry overnight. I have them in both gray and beige.

Awesome Pants
These pants are practical and good looking. I like that the drawstring waist is concealed on the inside of the beltline so you don't have strings dangling to hook on things. It is easy to zip the legs on and off. The fabric is tough but not bulky or hard. Very comfortable.

Love these!!
I bought these in the grey for a trip to Alaska. I live in Florida and have already worn them so much I bought two more pairs to take with me. The grey is my favorite and after reading reviews I did go a size bigger and I'm glad I did. I highly recommend these to everyone for any and all occasions. I actually put them in the sink and turned on the water and they did not get wet. Love these!!

Highly recommend
I wore them over a capilene base layer during a strenuous 4-day hike and they were still comfortable with plenty of room to sit down. You'll want to order one size up from your regular jean size so you can layer or wear them alone. They're also a fair price online via Altrec (I purchased my first pair in a shop for $20 more than Altrec's price). All the positive reviews regarding their flattering shape and versatility are true.

if you know north face sizing, go with what you know
I've been searching for years for a pair of convertible pants that fit like something i'd wear - functional and practical yet still flattering. After reading all the product reviews, I decided to go for these pants; also followed the recommendations and ordered a size up. I'm normally an 8 in north face clothing and range from 6-8 in other brands. I ordered a 10 cause it seemed like everyone was having problems with the size. When I got them, they were quite loose and saggy. So I went back and ordered an 8. They fit perfect, and I can't wait to get out on the trail to use them! So my suggestion as far as size would be, if you've ordered other north face products, go with the size you know. If this is your first north face purchase, weigh your options and remember that altrec does make returns really easy (and if it's free to ship it to you, I don't feel too bad paying to ship it back.. just an idea). Hope that helps!

convertible pants with style
I ordered one size larger, and they fit perfectly - not too tight, not too loose. Very durable; sits comfortably on the waist; shorts not too short. They were a little long, but not enough to drag under my shoes or boots. Overall, I haven't found any travel/hiking pants that compare.

Perfect!
I've finally decided that I need 'real' hiking pants, and after quite a bit of researching, decided on these pants. They are great. Now I don't know how I did it before. Very comfortable, just wash and wear. No ironing needed and they don't shrink. They are absolutely great, and now i am thinking of buying one more color.

Love, love, love!!!
These pants are AWESOME! They fit really well and are made of a great fabric. Don't forget to go a size up and you'll be fine. I'm 5'4 and usually wear a size 4 but the size medium was the perfect length and waist size. The waist band has not itchy elastic which is a plus! Love the three pants in one (pants, capris and short!) I definitely recommend these pants.

truly the best bargain
I love these pants. Just bought 2 more to prepare for the upcoming season. Yet paired w/insulated underware, I wore these all winter too. May run alittle small and I frayed the bottom of one pair by dragging them in the snow. Look no further for the best convertable pants!

Great for backpacking...
I bought the pants to take with me on the trail. They were wonderful in the rain and dried very quickly. I'm between a six and an eight and decided after reading the reviews to get an eight. They were a perfect fit for me! The length was also good and most pants I buy are too long. They not only serve there purpose, but they also look great!

Part 1 - Size
My husband has the men's version and it looks so good compared to the baggy ones I have. Thus after doing extensive research, I was sure that I wanted this pants too. However the sizing feedback by previous buyers from altrec and elsewhere gave me a bit of anxiety when deciding on size. My proportionate body is on the petite side, standing at 5'01" and weighing 95 lbs. Went to a couple of stores to try out sizes, but they only had 6 and above. Judging from the 6/short I tried, thought I should be able to fit into a 2/short. However I ordered a 4/short since many people said this pants are made small (figured having room to grow is more practical than thinking I can slim down further) and I didn't want to bother with exchange. Turned out the 4 is too big at my waist, threatening to slide off my hip bones. It is also very roomy in the butt/thigh area for me. Then I tried it with a thermal tights underneath and it is still big. Using the drawcords helps make it alright (with or without thermal tights). Barefooted, the length hits the floor with about 1/2 inch extra which should be ok if I wear shoes. No way would I be able to wear the regular length. Despite the not-so-perfect size, I'm keeping the pants coz there aren't any 2/short in stock anyway and the slightly roomy feel might be good for hiking. That said, I do love my new NF PPC's straight-cut fit! Although it is slightly big, it is still way better and smarter-looking than the baggy Royal Robbins convertible pants I have! I don't know how North Face did it! My Royal Robbins convertible is a size 0, a little tight at the waist but the area around the convertible zipper looks so baggy, very sloppy. I also encountered the weird sizes while at the stores. Found 2 pairs of 8/short but one is much bigger than the other! The bigger one should have been a 10. Upon closer inspection, discovered that the snap front closure buttons (at the waist) are different on both pants and the bigger pair did not have TNF tag on the righthand-side backpocket. My take is that either the bigger 8 was from a different manufacturing batch or it was a QC error. I believe this pants are made true to size, however the waist measurements on TNF sizing chart might not be applicable to this low-waist pants (must take in consideration if you are more rounded at the tummy). The contradicting sizing feedback by different people are probably due to various factors like personal preferences, it being a low- waist pants (some might like to wear it higher, possible with the drawcords), different body proportions out there (long torso-short legs, big thighs-small waist/hips etc.) Also, the existence of same size number discrepancy (size 8 example mentioned above) must have added to confusion (this depends on luck I guess, those with TNF tag above the right backpocket should be true to size). I've seen many and this is definitely the best pair of women's convertible pants around. Hope the above helps the next person to make a good sizing choice. As long as you get the size right, you'll love this pants! If I find a 2/short I'm buying another one! To TNF people, please make more of these pants!

These are worth the wait!
I am a size 2 and have been frustrated trying to find attractive hiking pants. Every store I go to, the smallest is always a 6 and the styling is very baggy. These fit beautifully, aren't noisy while walking, and having three options (shorts, capris, pants) is wonderful. I cannot wait until more colors come in my size, and I definitely recommend this pant to every woman out there. Thanks to altrec.com for the excellent customer service and fast shipping! These pants have made me a loyal customer, thanks for everything!

I bought these pants for my girlfriend for Christmas, and I bought her a different pair, because I didn't know which she would like. She chose these, and I will be returning the other pair... but more importantly... the people at Altrec.com customer service are the best. Most Comfy Travel Pants EVER!
Like many people who have already commented before me, I looked for a long time for travel pants that didn't look like old lady frumpers. These pants actually look like they are from this century, and more importantly, they are SO comfortable that I'm about to buy another pair for my next trip. I just got back from three weeks in Thailand, and these pants came in handy for many situations. Trekking, walking around holy sites, and even going out to dinner. They washed beautifully and are cool and comfortable and pack up light. I love the fact that they sit a little lower than most pants. I worked really hard to get in shape and all of the other convertible pants I tried on made me feel shleppy. But not these babies! I'm between sizes right now, so I bought up a size. I'm glad I would rather have my pants a tiny bit loose than too tight. I would HIGHLY recommend these pants.

My third pair!
I bought a pair of these North Face pants for an active trip to Hawaii last year, and they were really perfect. Comfortable for the long flight, zipped off the legs at the airport, quick drying for the frequent rainstorms. They fit great, and are actually flattering, but I agree that from the knees down they could be a little trimmer.

Best convertible pants out there!
These are the best convertible pants if you shop in the Jr's dept. Lower on the waist, not alot of extra room in the hips/crouch & shorts are not too long! I found they fit true to my usual size but run short! I exchanged the regular length for long length and they still are not too long. I am 5'7, 125 pounds with not alot of curve and the 6 long are great! I wish they had a bigger pocket on the side for passport as I am traveling out of country!

Great, well made hiking pants.
I really like these hiking pants. I bought a size 6 (I usually wear size 4 jeans from the Gap although sometimes size 2) and they fit comfortably and allow me to move. I was a little worried that these would not fit in the butt, as many hiking pants seem to be designed for less curvy figures and I had read that these were better on tall slim girls, but they are really comfortable on me, despite that I have some curves. They appear to be very well made and the fabric is great for use in the outdoors because it does not soil easily and actually breathes and moves quite well. These pants are not noisy and the regular length is perfect with sneakers although many of my jeans tend to drag. I like that these sit lower on the waist as I do not like feeling waistbands near my belly button, and the waistband, pockets, and belt loops were very comfortable even wearing a 35lb pack. The shorts are a good length and the pants are easy to convert. If anything, I would prefer a slightly more fitted shape around the knee so that the pants are a little more flared instead of just a straight, loose leg, but these pants are certainly the best compromise between fit, comfort, function, and practicality that I could find. I would definitely recommend these as practical, all purpose outdoor pants.

Love these pants!
I looked hi and lo for flattering hiking/travel pants for an upcoming trip to Costa Rica. These fit like a great pair of slacks, and are much more flattering than the other convertible pants that I tried on. Others made me look like I was wearing a potato sack... frumpy!! Not these, I even wear them around the city to run errands. I love these pants!

Best looking convertible pants I've found.
I read all the reviews before purchasing these pants and decided to take everyone's advice and go up a size. I wear a 6 and purchased an 8 regular. I can't imagine going any smaller. The length is also just right -- I'm 5'4". They look great and I'm looking forward to taking them hiking.

Love them
Great style/fit. Don't balloon out like most convertible pants. Nice low waist. Roll-up cuff has button and snap to hold the bottom of the legs (like a sun shirt does with the sleeves). Great if you want to roll them up to capri-length for stream crossing and such. I generally wear size 0-2 and the 2 is perfect.

versatile and cute
Okay, the nice Altrec guy on the phone sold me on the pants when he actually described them as 'cute'. I had only a few days to go before a trip to Honduras and needed something light, and with zip-off legs, but didn't want the potato-sack look. They are great for travel, comfy and my fiance thinks they're cute, too. They dry in a flash, they keep mosquitoes from biting, and they have a loop to secure them if you roll them up to capri length. Love the gray color, too.

Nice, not granny-looking convertible pants
I am a size 6 according to the size chart and ordered an 8 after reading many posts here. I am glad I did since I did not want a very snug fit. If I were to use it for casual purpose, I would order a 6. However, for hiking I need some room for movements. The crotch is gusseted so it's very comfortable. I like the option of also having a capri by rolling up the hem and use the button tab as a holder (similar to your shirts that can roll up the long sleeve with the tab and button). The interior waist string helps to tighten the waist because the waist is a little loose for me. The cut is slim looking and very sexy. It is not loose like most convertible pants, which is a big plus. Unzipping the bottom portion will give you the short length of about a 6" inseam. This is another nice feature. I don't like shorts that reach above the knees. There are lots of pockets. One rear pocket has zipper and the other has velcro. Two front pockets on the thighs have 2 slim velcro tabs on each pocket. I am 5'4" and ordered the "regular" length and it fits perfectly. Actually I ordered 2 pairs in 2 different colors and 1 pair is about 1" longer than the other. This has no bottom zipper, so I just hemmed the long one up an inch. I really like the fact that there is no bottom zipper, but the trade-off is you have to take off your boots to remove the bottom part. The zippers that remove the bottom portions of the pants have tabs marking the "R" and "L" legs which is also another nice feature. I would definitely recommend buying.

AWESOME PANTS!!!!
I bought two pairs blindly based on research and reviews, and they are the best purchase I have made in a long time..you can wear them regularly as pants, roll them up into capris, and zip off the leggings for shorts! So versatile.. Very comfortable fit and loose enough to allow a full range of motion, but not too loose so they appear baggy. They fit me true to size.. I'm a little on the short side 5'3" and i like how the length is not too long, which is a problem I usually have with pants. I'm excited that my pants won't drag along the dirt behind me as I hike! I'm sad they don't have any more pants in my size for such a reasonable price.

Functional and Stylish
These pants are great. I wore them while travelling in southern France and Switzerland for 3 weeks in mid-July - both very hot and cool, dry conditions. They were great! I only brought one other pair of pants on my trip, so I wore these a lot and they performed wonderfully. Kept me cool while hiking up the Schilthorn in the Alps, converting easily from shorts to pants and back. Nice fit, easy to wash and dry quickly. Fit is on the smaller end of a size 8, tailored closely, so be aware when choosing your size. I liked these pants so much (they work wonderfully here in the hot, humid summers of New Orleans) that I bought another pair immediately upon arrival back home in the States. Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I have never owned such excellent hiking pants! The material is very light and breathes so well! Also amazed with the fit - I can never find pants that fit right, but these didn't need to be altered! comfortable great fitting pants
These pants are very comfortable for hiking in warm conditions. Even though they offer the rip-away legs I chose to leave the legs on due to the heavy vegetation in which I hiked. They were cool and dry. The crotch was a little droopy on my 5'2" frame but all in all these are a thumbs up.

Awesome
These pants do live up to the rave review. I purchased the pants for hiking trips in Switzerland. The pants are stylish. The length is a bit on the short side, as many people have commented, but it's not too noticeable. What I like the most about the pants is how dirt resistant it is. My companion's pants turned green after sitting on the grass for lunch, whereas mine stayed clean for the entire trip of 2 weeks sitting on grass, rocks, dirt...you name it. The material is durable and light. In regard to the fit, I am 5'5", about 122 lbs. I ordered a size 8 (one size up), but turned out too big. I exchanged for a size 6, which was still a bit too lose, but I didn't have time for another exchange. I just used the Hopefully this will give you an idea of what size to look for. Altrec has great exchange policy and the delivery is really quick. Overall, fantastic pants - stylish and live up to the standards. Ahh, and the great discount offered by Altrec is icing on the cake.

The only sexy zip-off pant on the planet
OK, I just bought a pair of these (getting ready for inca trail/amazon trip), and they are SO darn good lookin' and they fit so beautifully that I've been searching for them in all different colors on the internet. I'm a fashion-conscious New Yorker, and these are so cute I might actually consider wearing them in the city, when I'm NOT camping! Time to retire my old grannie-pant zip-offs (which languish in the back of my closet unless when I'm going deep-woods where no one can see me but bears)! BUY them one size larger for sure. I'm normally an 8, and these fit perfectly resting right on the hips at a size 10.

Great pants, great price
These pants are great, they are lightweight, fit great, they have a drawstring and snap waist, with belt loops, could you ask for more? Lots of pockets, and the pant bottoms roll up and have a button loop so you can wear them like capris, or zip them off and wear the shorts! You will not be disappointed with these pants, great for travel, hiking, camping, you name it!

excellent
used these on the inca trail for 4 straight days and in the amazon. dried easily. good in cold, wet or warm weather. great fit, length perfect at one size larger than my normal. endured better than convertibles by a popular aussie brand that my fellow travellers wore.

Great Pant!
Finally a zip off pant that is both functional and stylish! This is the first zip off pant I've ever tried that hasn't made me look matronly!

Love them!
Fit is comfortable and looks good. It's like packing 3 pants in one. Not only can you zip off the legs to make cute shorts, but you can roll up the legs and convert them to capris. Very smart design and classic khaki fabric is nice too.

A paramount sucess!!
These pants met all my exspectations. They fit true to size and zip off to nice flattering length. The internal drawstring waist is also nice so you can adjust where you want the pant to ride on the true waist or lower on the hip. Very comfortable....love um...!

These pants rock!
These are the first and only zip offs I've found that don't fit like clown pants or look like your grandmother should be wearing them. Very stylish and comfortable but probably do run a bit short b/c I normally wear petite pants and these were short enough. They don't have zippered legs, so if you need to hem them it's no problem. And Altrec had the best price so I ordered two pairs.

great convertible pants
As far as convertible pants go, these are a bit more stylish and much more comfortable for a women's shape....although they are not a true "low rise" the fit is more like a longer board short with a higher waist band. I agree that you should go up in size, I am a 6-8 and the 10 fits just right (I estimate about a 29 inch lower-rise waist, which is normally about an 8) . I really like the fact that the shorts are shorter than most pants of this kind, and the nice little buttoned strap to make the pants into capris is a great option. Overall, much more versatile and fashionable than all the other convertible pants I tried on at REI, patagonia and the local camping store....but, still not quite the style of a great off trail low-rise pant! This being said....with all my other convertible pants I ONLY wore them when I was in a very remote location without many people to see their baggy butt and ugly high waters and waist, but with these pants...I will likely wear them for local hikes and on trips with light packing needed!

Great for the Price
I bought these pants for my hike in Tanzania, but I think I'll wear them year round. they fit really well, but like others, I usually wear a 4 and i bought a six. Glad I did, they felt perfect. The pant legs are easy to remove, although I feel the shorts are shorter than I expected.

Super comfortable & practical for travel
I'm a size 6 and ordered the 8 based on the reviews here. They are definitely comfortable and roomy but I think the 6 would have been fine too. They are a little baggier than I would like and the crotch hangs pretty low. I'm still happy with them but I may order another pair in a 6 so I have the baggy vs. fitted option. They are great pants for travel - they are so versatile with the capri and shorts option. And the pockets are a huge plus. They are very lightweight and breath well when it's hot.

not frumpy, long length, great pants
I had given up on the idea of finding convertible hiking pants that didn't make me look like my mom, but then I found these. Contemporary low-rise, not frumpy/balloony in the waist/hips, good length of shorts when the legs are zipped off, and the button tab to make them capri length is a great idea. Ordered one size up and they're snug right after washing, though if you wear them multiple times between washings (as I did on my thru-hike) they loosen up considerably. They dry pretty quickly in case of surprise rain showers or washing at night to wear on the trail again the next day. I'm 5'9" and these are the only convertible pants I've found that have a long enough inseam not to look like high-waters on me. The brownie color is great as mud and dirt barely show at all. My only complaint is that they did get pretty pilly/snaggy during normal hiking conditions.

good pant
I like these alot as convertibles, but found the pant legs to be a bit short. I like the "capri" option. Love that they don't have an elastic waistband and balloony backside.

Not the best bikers pant
These are nice in terms of fit and appearance. But if you are biking the wide leg will get caught in the chain...but you could always convert them to shorts and then you'd be fine. Oh well.

Runs short
I am 5'8" and the size 8 was way too short. It came to my ankle. However, the Fossil Ivory is a great color!
