If there was an award for "Most Imitated but Never Duplicated Ski," Volkl's Supersport Five Star Ski would top the list. Ski Magazine gave it top honors in the All Mountain Cruiser category, noting that the Volkl Supersport Five Star Ski dominated the "Hard Snow Grip, Long Turns and Rebound Energy" categories. The overall ski dimensions remain loyal to the award-winning Five Stars of seasons past, but this new version has a Double Grip technology that essentially doubles the height of the construction above the ski edge to enhance skier support and grip. Besides the obvious performance enhancements, you'll find that the Double Grip can help enhance your overall stamina because you'll spend a little less effort holding your edge. This version of the Supersport Five Star has a Marker AT Piston Control, a special interface equipped with a hydraulic oil piston that delivers amazing flex and control between the boot, binding and ski. The result is a quieter and smoother ride with barely any vibrations or unsettling oscillations. Like before, the binding still slides on aluminum motion rails using two pins--one in front and one in back--to glide your boot along over bumps and through undulations with complete flex and uninterrupted power transmission. The result is a smoother ride and greater control wherever you venture on the mountain.
I love these skis
I have had these skis for about half a season now. I am a ski instructor at Sugarbush in Vermont and these skis are amazing.
I am 17 6'1" about 185 and a very aggressive skier who favors the bumps
I have found these skis to hold on almost anything(have skied alot of ice this season) They are very quick in there edge transfer only problem is stay on top of them and keeping wait forward in larger radius turns.
You always need to be on them and can never skip out on a turn.
While in the bumps they can be a very good ski but require you to do lots of work in there.
Overall would recomend these for anyone looking to ski a very fast ski that with a little help can also be a great ski in the bumps.
OUTSTANDING!
Phenomenal ski with tenacious grip! I ski the northeast where ice is diamond hard and a good day of skiing is one without stitches. These skis carved channels into rock hard ice and got me down to snowboard anglgulation in long arc turns on the packed powder. Not meant for the bumps, too much snap in the tail. I bought them a little tall (175's for a 5'11" 200 lb skier). I could have used the 168's. Still very quick edge to edge. I used to work for Atomic back in the day and I rank these along with the Metrons for all mountain capability. Great for the northeast, I'd go wider in the waist for the west.
Are you ready for this?
Riding this ski is a dream. It's like riding a 175HP superbike like the Yamaha YZF-R1 up a canyon road. An absolutely breathtaking experience. This ski for shure is not for everyone. You have to be ultra focussed on the other skiers on the slope and calculate where they will go in the next moment, because you are the one who will have to pass all of them.
So, if you are looking for a superfast carving experience with endless edge grip... buy this ski, you won't be disappointed for shure.
And... please always wear a helmet!

have to stand on em
A ski with great reviews, I (expert all mountian skier)did buy into the hype, also very expensive. If you long for the P series, steady cruisers with incormprable holding power, get ready for the opposite, quirky skis these five stars are...like driving an sports car with a sticky clutch.
If you have or thinking of getting, I found these skis work best feet apart, with sloppy slides into turns, stand and stomp down hard on'em when on the bumps, not bad on groomed (others who luv this ski musta been on the crack pipe)...ski them hard like your trying to snap the piston rail in half...they do work better that way, then complain and try and get your money back at the shop. Go buy something else like I should have.
unbelievable, great
I have skied on long skis all my life, 205's or better. I purchased a pair of 175's last winter at the urging of my friends. I had my doubts. The first day on them was fantastic. I felf like I was nailed to the slope. They went where I wanted them with very little effort. They want to turn fast. I like the load up on the front end of a turn and the spring on the back end coming out of a turn. You still have to know about weight transfer, but these skis make that job a little easier. I still ski hard after 52 years of skiing and these skis went beyond my expectations. Good job Volkl. By the way this is my 3rd pair of Volkls. Probably the best yet.
Great All Around Ski
Great carving ski - fast, stable, quick edge to edge, lots of energy and pop with minimal effort, great for high speeds. A little tough in the bumps however compared to the old straight skis - difficult to stay right on top of them. Everywhere else, the skis were great - crud, groomed, steeps. Good all mountain ski. I highly recommend for advanced/expert skiers.
Carver
The SS 5 star is recommended for the advanced to expert skier, but if you are an aggressive intermediate buy these skis! The 5 star edges so well (no matter what the conditions) it will give you confindence to turn up the speed and carve like mad on any slope.
Confidence
I fell in love with this ski the moment I made my first turn. It held until I made the transition to the next turn. It also held speed through tight carving, not slowing down where you would have to tuck to get back up to speed, but almost accelerating from turn to turn. Volkl has won my vote!
SWEET!!!!!
I just skied a day with conditions close to solid ice. The mountain had been rained on and edge control was the only safe way to ski. These skis held tight and responded just the way you dream about. Next day it started snowing and between breaking through the powder, onto the crust the supersport transitioned flawlessly!
Solid Ride
Unlike previous 5 star models, this ski is not a noodle. A good all around ski..I am a season pass holder at Copper and ski 60+ days a year and am a lightweight expert (5'6", 150#s). These boards can take it all and are good at finishing the turn..the tail is stiff enough for me, but heavier skiers might opt for the 6 star.
They don't like breakable crust or heavy frozen crud however.. and are a bit too stiff for the deep stuff as well (thats when I break out the Big Stix)
Not for the Agerssive
Tried the 5 Star at Steamboat week of Feb 21st... I covered all terrain: trees, crud fields, chutes, grommers, bumps etc..
Found the 5 star a bit lacking for the expert skier regardless of size. I'm 5'9" 145# and they just did not have enough power for me. My friend also tried the ski, he lives in steamboat, exceptional skier, and is 5'8" 180#.... did not like the 5 star either.
The ski was too slow edge to edge with no tail snap to power you into the next turn. The ski was ok for the intermediate groomers, but at high speed on the steepest trails it began to show weakness in holding power and it was required that I dump speed into the turn (slide) verus hold onto a carve and turn into the mountain.
I also skied the 724 EXP (yellow Vokl) and it was much more rugged than the 5 star and a better all round performer.
stiff, quirky, nasty skis
Bought these skis and disliked them so much after 3 days of skiing bumps and groomers that I traded them in, lost $250 in the deal, and wound up very satisfied with Atomic M EX, a great ski.
Not worth the money
I can't believe the hype about these skis. I was really disappointed with them. I found them jittery at higher speeds and sluggish in the bumps. I am a very aggressive skier who has been skiing for over 30 years. I will ski just about anywhere in the steepest terrain, bumps, hardpack, crud and powder. I was skiing the 175s (I weigh 160 and am 5'11"). The tops of the skis are really soft and with less than 2 seasons on them, the tops were really scraped up. I talked to other folks that were skiing on them, and they had noticed the same problem. A slice on the tail on the edge cut all the way down to the metal of the edge. Water started to get into the one ski, and it looks like the base is starting to bubble out. I tried to get the dealer I bought them from (Mel Cottons in San Jose) to return for a warranty replacement, but the sales guy was more interested in taking the side of the manufacturer (lesson learned there), and wouldn't ship them back. At least the dealer let me demo a pair of K2 Apache Recons, which I found to be an excellent ski for just about any condition I threw at them. In my opinion, if you are an aggressive skier who wants a tank of a ski that can handle crud, ice, powder, and packed, you should check out the recons. Despite the fact that that the can blast through anything, I found them really snappy on quick turns. They are going to be my next pair (and I won't be buying them at Mel Cottons).
