MSR Miox Water Purifier (Fall 07):
Initially developed for and tested by the U.S. military, the MSR Miox™ Purifier eliminates the need to pump water by combining a small amount of untreated water and charging it with electricity to produce a cocktail of mixed oxidants that you add to your untreated water to kill viruses, bacteria, giardia and cryptosporidia within a four hour period. No larger than a small flashlight, the Miox™ is an essential component for any well-equipped base camp or disaster preparation kit. The salt dosage is so small that it doesn't impart any bad flavor or health risk like iodine and other chemical purifiers. Because the Miox™ requires nothing more than ordinary salt and batteries, it's almost maintenance free, allowing you to purify over 200 liters of water between changes.
